Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: A Community of Faith and Justice
The Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a vibrant community of faith that seeks to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and do justice in Jesus' name. As part of the ELCA, we are committed to living out our faith through worship, service, and advocacy for those who are marginalized or oppressed.
Our mission is rooted in our belief that God's love is for all people. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone can experience God's grace and be transformed by it. Whether you are new to Christianity or have been a lifelong believer, we invite you to join us on this journey of faith.
Faith
At the heart of our community is our shared faith in Jesus Christ. We believe that through his life, death, and resurrection, he has reconciled us with God and one another. Our worship services reflect this belief as we gather together to hear God's word proclaimed through scripture readings, sermons, hymns, prayers, and sacraments.
We also believe that faith is not just something we practice on Sundays but something that should permeate every aspect of our lives. That's why we offer opportunities for spiritual growth throughout the week such as Bible studies, prayer groups, retreats and more.
Values
Our values are grounded in our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus Christ. We value:
- Inclusivity: We welcome all people regardless of race/ethnicity/national origin; gender identity/expression; sexual orientation; age; physical or mental ability; socioeconomic status.
- Justice: We work towards creating a more just society by advocating for policies that promote equality & fairness.
- Compassion: We seek to show compassion towards those who are hurting or struggling.
- Stewardship: We recognize that everything belongs to God and we are called to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us.
- Community: We believe that we are stronger together than we are alone.
Leadership
Our synod is led by a team of dedicated pastors, lay leaders, and staff who work together to support our congregations and ministries. Our bishop provides spiritual leadership for the synod while our staff provides administrative support. We also have various committees that focus on specific areas such as evangelism, social justice, youth ministry, etc.
Congregations
The Metropolitan Chicago Synod is made up of over 200 congregations located throughout the Chicagoland area. Each congregation is unique in its worship style, outreach programs, and community involvement. However, all share a commitment to living out their faith in tangible ways through service projects, advocacy efforts or other forms of outreach.
