The room that I was given in this half empty hotel was described as a "small double".
As you can see from the photograph, that is taking "artistic licence" somewhat far.
The broken bedhead was badly repaired and the staff had no engagement with their guests.
There are plenty of other options at Winchester.
My experience at the Mercury has guaranteed that I will seek one of those when I next visit.

Somewhat worn hotel. The room was of decent size. The bathroom had a bathtub, this appeared as something dirty when there was some mold around the hard wash surfaces.
The service was pleasant and helpful, unfortunately the same cannot be said of the hotel bar where it took a long time to be served, although we were the only ones there as well as the bartender did not have enough knowledge about simple drinks like irish coffee.
Otherwise, the hotel had the perfect location.

This hotel is in an excellent location right in the heart of Winchester. The staff are friendly and efficient. The hotel itself is VERY tired. Needs a complete refit as the rooms look very dated.

Great central location, but very tired, and woefully in need of an upgrade. We came for breakfast at 10am, and some elements seemed like they had been on the hotplate since service started at 0730. On the plus side, our bathroom had a bath with shower over.

Great location, friendly staff. Hotel is close to the shops and a great view of the cathedral (if your room is cathedral facing). Some parts of the hotel, a little TLC is needed, but other than that, excellent hotel.

You book this place for the location. Otherwise it's a basic hotel. Decent enough. We stay there for the Christmas market. The first time we booked it we were met with a Douglas Hurd just bobbing around in the bowl upon our arrival. Presumably left by the previous guests and hopefully not the maid who had just cleaned out room. The second time thankfully the only log we had was the Yuletide variety.

Great value for money hotel. All staff really helpful and friendly. Only stayed one night and was made to feel very welcome. Good Covid rules, very clean and tidy. The bar is very pleasant and more importantly OPEN . Luca, went out of his way to provide some lovely drinks for our anniversary.. We will be back. Thank you so much Mercure team at Winchester.

I feel my human rights have been breached staying here. The room was more tired and wrinkled than my 90yr old grandmother. I saw rats running away from the left over food at breakfast and the "manager" couldn't manage his way out of a wet paper bag with a hole in it let alone a hotel.

Parking was more expensive than flying to Europe. The view is nice is you like looking at partly constructed buildings, although the soothing sound of delivery trucks at 6 in the morning helped me sleep (Not).
Overall I would rather sleep in my smart car then sleep in this place again.

Beautiful venue, picture of Winchesters finest. Staff however...abysmal. Inept, rude and careless. Do not go in the evenings. Unable to serve at a basic level- can't pour pints, operate coffee machine, no understanding of product inventory, unable to observe service ettiquette, failed to charge correct amount to one of us twice in the same evening- on the other end of the spectrum several of my party could have walked out without even paying if we hadn't reminded THEM we hadn't been charged!

The staff are very friendly and helpful nothing is too much trouble. The food is very nice and the beer is well looked after. The rooms are of good size and clean the beds are comfortable with everything in your room available to cater for your needs. I've come here on business but wouldn't hesitate to stop here if for personal visits

Initial bedroom was a small double with the bed up against the wall, a pet hate of mine. The window would not open. I had to ask for another room with working windows. It wasn't offered. Gave me an upgrade to I guess a larger double, but More

Rather disappointing. Not greeted on arrival for a Christmas event. Food not hot - vegetables barely cooked. Beef casserole accompanied by pickled onions from a jar - not roasted shallots. Very weak coffee. A special Christmas event but with the staff filling one of the tables dressed in jeans and trackie bottoms. Dance music very odd selection including Guns and Rose's and Motorhead! Poor value for money sadly. Won't be going back.

Very nice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Room was upgraded on recommendation of the receptionist who thought the original would be too small. Great advice as we had a a direct view of Winchester Cathedral..amazing!

The night staff are very rude.
Won't let you out for a cigarette, if you do they won't let you back in. Horrendous treatment of a customer especially during the pandemic. Locked out a vunerable adult, with learning difficulties at 3 am and phoned the police on him. The management seem to think they are something special and don't even take a complaint seriously. Plus the place is a bit of a dump, not gonna lie travel lodge across the way is much nicer!

The so called executive room was awful. The hot tap in shower is so stiff that you can't switch the tap off after. Secondly the kettle they provided me was so out dated and had a hole in it... didn't realise until I made myself tea and there was a plastic piece floating.. (see images). It seem everything was fallen apart. Did address this to them but no action was taken I left a note on the desk when I was out for the day. Nothing was done not coming here again.

Have stayed here with work over the last couple of weeks. Amenities are poor really. No gym. Restaurant food is terrible but that is not such a big deal as it's central and loads of places to eat. Rooms are very dared and shabby unless you are on the 2nd floor which are newly refurbed. There is also no aircon in any of the 1st floor rooms and it's incredible noisy. All in all Winchester has much better places (try the royal Winchester) to stay at the same price. I definitely wouldn't recommend staying here unless everything else is booked out.

Looking at the reviews of this place I was a little nervous. But I was sold by the idea of being centrallly located with view of the Cathedral. I was not disappointed. The view is spectacular, the photo doesn't do it justice. The room I stayed was the Prestige. It is very large with a massive bed. It has everything you need from a hotel room, including aircon. kettle, coffee machine and fridge. Nice extra is the heated bathroom mirror which meant I had no problem shaving after my shower. The bedroom and bathroom are very modern, although the bathroom is let down the shower which is not very powerful. This is probably a result of being on the top floor. Still, the shower was okay. The welcome and service is very friendly. Late checkout was offered, and much appreciated. Having lived in Winchester I knew the benefits of the hotel's location, and would would definitely stay here again.

A great hotel but with a seemingly slightly dated, but not uncomfortable, decor. Bit of a seventies and eighties feel to it. This is more than made up for by it's great location beside the cathedral and the great staff working there.

We stayed here in July and frankly, the hotel didn't meet the expectations that it's 4 stars would suggest. It is a tired property in need of an update and it's only benefit is it's central location next to the cathedral. While we stayed, the air conditioning was not functional during the warm weather and the desk fan did not help much. Entering our room simply did not result in any positive feeling; the worn carpet, the dated television service, the low power shower, the dust gathered on the top of the bed's headboard. The bed was reasonably comfortable, but on the whole, a rather sad and mediocre property.

Nice hotel, staff all have excellent customer service. Some aspects of room could do with little bit of an update, but generally really nice place. Right in the heart of Winchester with great views of cathedral. Breakfast was excellent. Shame the parking was a little expensive, but there's a free carpark between 6pm-8am a few steps away which we were lucky enough to be able to use.

Stayed one night, this was a last minute booking booked by my manager. I have to say I am very impressed. Shortly after booking I phoned the hotel for directions, Kian answered and at first couldn t find my reservation but it was resolved very efficiently. At check in, there were a few guests causing annoyance outside which the young lad went outside an resolved the situation what looked like homeless people? Check in was very efficient, given all the information I needed. Ordered Chicken Tika later that evening. Was amazing your chief is very talented. Had a complaint just after about my neighbors being inconsiderable loud. Was resolved very quick. Genuinely, I would come back to this hotel and give my sympathies as it is closed only to key workers and they are just learning the rope like everyone else. Hotel was very clean, saw the staff sanitizing all areas multiple times which is very reassuring.

Great location in the heart of Winchester but expensive for what is really just a basic hotel.
The room was adequate with a decent bathroom.
I also had breakfast in the hotel which offered an excellent buffet selection of both cooked and continental. I would still say it was over priced though.

Don't believe what Expedia or other websites tell you THEY DO NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING. It was the hottest day of the year. Otherwise everything was great. I would only visit this hotel if the predicted high temperature was 10 or less.
