The Meherrin Indian Tribe: A Rich History and Culture
Welcome to the official website of the Meherrin Indian Nation, one of eight state-recognized nations of Indians in North Carolina. We are proud to share our rich history and culture with you, and we hope that you will find this website informative and engaging.
The Meherrin Nation has a long and storied history that dates back thousands of years. Our people have lived in small communities near the North Carolina and Virginia border for generations, primarily in Hertford County, NC. We refer to ourselves as Kauwets'a:ka, which means "people who live by the water."
Our ancestors were skilled hunters, fishermen, farmers, and artisans who lived off the land. They had a deep respect for nature and believed that all living things were connected. They passed down their traditions through storytelling, dance, music, artistry, and other cultural practices.
Today's Meherrin Indian Tribe is a vibrant community that continues to honor our heritage while embracing modern life. We are committed to preserving our language, customs, beliefs, values while also adapting to new technologies.
Our tribal government is led by an elected Tribal Council consisting of seven members who serve four-year terms. The council oversees all aspects of tribal affairs including education programs for children; health care services; housing assistance; economic development initiatives; cultural preservation efforts such as language classes or traditional arts workshops.
We also have several departments within our tribal government including social services department which provides assistance with food stamps or Medicaid applications; housing department which helps families find affordable homes on reservation lands or off-reservation areas nearby if they prefer not living on reservation lands due to personal reasons like work commute distance etc.; education department responsible for providing educational opportunities from pre-school through college level courses both on-reservation schools as well as off-reservation schools nearby if they prefer not attending school on reservation lands due personal reasons like work commute distance etc.
The Meherrin Indian Tribe is also home to several cultural centers and museums that showcase our history, art, and traditions. These include the Meherrin Nation Cultural Center, which features exhibits on our tribal history and culture; the Meherrin Indian Museum, which houses artifacts from our past; and the Kauwets'a:ka Language Preservation Project, which works to preserve our language for future generations.
In addition to preserving our heritage, we are also committed to promoting economic development within our community. We have several businesses on reservation lands including a convenience store/gas station; a smoke shop; a bingo hall; and a tribal farm that produces fresh produce for local markets.
We also partner with other organizations in the region to promote tourism and economic growth. For example, we work with local governments to develop hiking trails or fishing spots near reservation lands or off-reservation areas nearby if they prefer not visiting reservation lands due personal reasons like work commute distance etc.; we collaborate with universities or colleges nearby who offer courses related Native American studies or anthropology so students can learn more about us while earning college credits at same time.
Overall, the Meherrin Indian Tribe is proud of its rich history and culture. We invite you to explore this website further to learn more about us!
