Long Beach Area Council: Keeping Children Safe through Scouting

As a Scouting volunteer, you understand the importance of keeping children safe. A recent bill (AB 506) was passed by the State of California requiring all youth-serving organizations to have policies and procedures in place to prevent child abuse. Long Beach Area Council is one such organization that has been at the forefront of ensuring child safety for over 100 years.

Long Beach Area Council is a non-profit organization that provides character-building programs for young people in Long Beach and surrounding areas. The council serves over 5,000 youth annually through its various programs, including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts.

The council's mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. These values include being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful thrifty brave clean and reverent.

All adult volunteers are required to complete this training before working with youth members. In addition to Youth Protection Training program Long Beach Area Council also conducts background checks on all adult volunteers who work directly with youth members. This helps ensure that individuals with a history of child abuse or other criminal activity are not allowed access to children under any circumstances.

Another way that Long Beach Area Council ensures child safety is through its two-deep leadership policy which requires at least two adults be present at all times during Scouting activities or events involving minors. This policy helps prevent situations where an adult may be alone with a minor which could lead potentially dangerous situations.

Long Beach Area Council also has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of child abuse or neglect. Any suspected incidents are immediately reported to the appropriate authorities and the council cooperates fully with any investigations.

In addition to its focus on child safety, Long Beach Area Council offers a wide range of programs and activities for youth members. Cub Scouts is designed for boys and girls in grades K-5, while Boy Scouts is open to boys ages 11-17. Venturing is a co-ed program for young adults ages 14-20 that focuses on high adventure activities such as rock climbing, backpacking, and kayaking. Exploring is another co-ed program that provides career exploration opportunities for young adults ages 14-20.

Sea Scouts is another program offered by Long Beach Area Council which focuses on boating skills and maritime careers. The council operates two Sea Scout ships which provide hands-on training in navigation, seamanship, engineering, and leadership.

Long Beach Area Council also operates Camp Tahquitz which provides year-round camping opportunities for youth members. The camp features hiking trails; fishing; archery; swimming; canoeing; kayaking; rock climbing walls among other outdoor activities.
