About Local 79

Local 79: The Largest Laborers’ Local in North America

Local 79 is a labor union that represents over 10,000 active and retired members in the construction industry. It is the largest Laborers’ Local in North America, with a long history of advocating for workers' rights and improving working conditions.

The union was founded in 1937 as part of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), which has been representing workers since its inception in 1903. LIUNA has grown to become one of the most influential labor unions in North America, with over half a million members across Canada and the United States.

Local 79's membership includes construction workers from various trades, including bricklayers, carpenters, cement masons, electricians, ironworkers, painters, plumbers and pipefitters. The union also represents workers who specialize in demolition work or hazardous waste removal.

One of Local 79's primary goals is to ensure that its members receive fair wages and benefits for their work. This includes negotiating collective bargaining agreements with employers to establish minimum wage rates and working conditions for all members.

In addition to advocating for better wages and benefits for its members, Local 79 also provides training programs to help them develop new skills or improve existing ones. These programs include apprenticeships that allow new workers to learn on-the-job while earning a living wage.

Another important aspect of Local 79's mission is promoting workplace safety. The union works closely with employers to identify potential hazards on job sites and develop strategies for minimizing risks. Members are trained on how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and follow safety protocols at all times.

Local 79 also plays an active role in community outreach efforts by supporting local charities and participating in events that benefit residents throughout New York City. For example, the union sponsors an annual holiday toy drive that provides gifts for children from low-income families.

Overall, Local 79 is committed to improving working conditions for its members while promoting economic growth throughout New York City through responsible development practices. With its large membership base and strong track record of success over many decades as part of LIUNA’s network across North America – it’s no wonder why they are considered one of the most influential labor unions around!
