Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary: Providing a Safe Haven for Senior Dogs
Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary is a non-profit organization based in Petaluma, California that provides a safe and loving home for senior large breed dogs who have been displaced from their homes and/or abandoned for any reason. The sanctuary was founded by Alice Mayn, who has been rescuing dogs since 1996. She started the sanctuary in honor of her beloved dog Lily, who passed away at the age of 14.
The mission of Lily's Legacy is to provide a comfortable and nurturing environment for senior dogs that have nowhere else to go. Many of these dogs are surrendered by their owners due to financial hardship or health issues, while others are found wandering the streets or brought in from overcrowded shelters. Regardless of how they arrive at the sanctuary, each dog is given individual attention and care.
At Lily's Legacy, senior dogs are given a second chance at life. They receive medical care as needed, including regular check-ups with veterinarians and medication management if necessary. They also receive plenty of love and attention from staff members and volunteers who spend time with them every day.
The sanctuary has several acres of land where the dogs can run around freely without being confined to cages or kennels. There are also indoor areas where they can rest comfortably when they need to take a break from playing outside.
One unique aspect of Lily's Legacy is that it specializes in large breed senior dogs such as Great Danes, Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands and other breeds that often have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds. These larger breeds require more space than smaller ones do which makes it difficult for them to be adopted into homes with limited space.
Lily's Legacy relies on donations from individuals as well as corporate sponsors to keep its doors open year-round. The organization hosts several fundraising events throughout the year including an annual gala dinner, silent auctions, and other events to raise funds for the dogs in their care.
In addition to providing a safe haven for senior dogs, Lily's Legacy also educates the public about responsible pet ownership. The organization offers resources and information on topics such as spaying and neutering, proper nutrition, exercise, and training.
