La Plata Electric Association: Providing Safe and Reliable Electricity to Colorado Communities
La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative that serves the communities of La Plata and Archuleta, as well as segments of Hinsdale, Mineral, and San Juan counties in Colorado. With 22 cooperatives in the state, LPEA is the fifth largest cooperative that provides safe and reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost to approximately 34,200 members while powering more than 46,500 meters.
Founded in 1939 by local farmers who wanted to bring electricity to their rural communities, LPEA has grown into a trusted provider of energy services for both residential and commercial customers. The cooperative's mission is to provide its members with affordable electricity while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
One of the key benefits of being a member-owner of LPEA is having a say in how the cooperative operates. Members have voting rights at annual meetings where they elect board members who represent their interests. This democratic structure ensures that LPEA remains accountable to its members.
LPEA also offers various programs designed to help its members save money on their energy bills. For example, the co-op's Energy Efficiency Program provides rebates for energy-efficient appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Additionally, LPEA offers free home energy audits that can help identify areas where homeowners can make improvements to reduce their energy consumption.
Another important aspect of LPEA's operations is its commitment to renewable energy sources. The co-op has invested heavily in solar power generation facilities over the years with plans for further expansion in this area. By increasing its use of renewable resources like solar power, LPEA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing clean energy solutions for its customers.
In addition to providing reliable electricity services at competitive prices, LPEA also plays an active role in supporting local communities through various initiatives such as charitable donations and volunteer work by employees. The co-op recognizes that it has an important role beyond just providing power; it must also be a responsible corporate citizen that contributes positively towards community development.
Overall, La Plata Electric Association stands out among other electric distribution cooperatives due to its commitment towards providing safe and reliable electricity services at affordable prices while promoting sustainable practices through renewable resources like solar power generation facilities. As a member-owned organization with strong ties within local communities across Colorado counties served by them - La Plata Electric Association continues striving towards excellence every day!
