The History of Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe
Kramerbooks was founded in 1976 by Bill Kramer and his wife Sandra Rappaport as an independent bookstore that specialized in political science books. Over the years, the store expanded its offerings to include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children's books and more. In 1986 they opened up their cafe called "Afterwords" which became an instant hit among locals.
In 2004 they moved to their current location on Connecticut Avenue NW where they combined both the bookstore and cafe into one space creating what we know today as "Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe". The new location allowed them to expand their offerings even further by adding a full-service bar and restaurant called "All Day".
