KIPP Bay Area Schools: Providing Quality Education for All
KIPP Bay Area Schools is a network of 17 public charter schools located in Northern California. The organization provides tuition-free education to students from grades TK-12, with a focus on college preparation and academic excellence. KIPP stands for Knowledge Is Power Program, and the organization's mission is to empower students from underserved communities to succeed in college and beyond.
The KIPP Bay Area Schools network was founded in 2002 by Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, who were both Teach For America corps members at the time. They started their first school in Houston, Texas, with the goal of providing high-quality education to low-income students. Since then, KIPP has grown into a national network of over 200 schools serving more than 100,000 students across the country.
In Northern California, KIPP Bay Area Schools serves over 7,000 students across San Francisco, Oakland, San Lorenzo, San Jose and East Palo Alto. The organization's approach is based on five pillars: high expectations; choice & commitment; more time; power to lead; and focus on results.
High Expectations
At KIPP Bay Area Schools , teachers set high expectations for all their students regardless of their background or previous academic performance. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning journey by setting goals for themselves that align with these expectations.
Choice & Commitment
KIPP believes that every student deserves access to quality education regardless of where they come from or what challenges they face outside the classroom. To this end,Kipp offers families a choice when it comes to selecting a school that best fits their child’s needs.Kipp also expects parents/guardians commit themselves fully towards supporting their children’s academic success through regular communication with teachers, school attendance etc.
More Time
To ensure that all its students have ample opportunity for learning,Kipp provides an extended school day (8am-4pm) as well as summer programs which help bridge any gaps created during long breaks between terms. This extra time allows teachers more opportunities for individualized instruction while also giving kids additional opportunities for extracurricular activities like sports clubs or music lessons.
Power To Lead
At Kipp,Bay area schools believe leadership skills can be developed at an early age.To this end,the organisation encourages its pupils/students take up leadership roles within the school community such as peer tutoring/mentoring etc. This helps build confidence,self-esteem while also developing important life skills such as teamwork, collaboration etc..
