Kettners: A Soho Institution with a Colourful History
Kettners is a well-known name in the heart of London's Soho district. Located in seven Grade II-listed townhouses, Kettners has been an institution in the area for over 150 years. The restaurant and bar have seen many changes over the years, but one thing that has remained constant is its reputation for excellent food and drink.
The history of Kettners dates back to 1867 when Auguste Kettner, a former chef to Napoleon III, opened his eponymous restaurant on Romilly Street. The restaurant quickly became popular with London's high society and was known for its French cuisine and opulent decor.
Over the years, Kettners has played host to many famous faces including Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill and Bing Crosby. In fact, it was at Kettners that Wilde first met Lord Alfred Douglas - a meeting that would change both their lives forever.
During World War II, Kettners was used as an officers' mess by the British Army before being taken over by legendary restaurateur Peter Langan in 1976. Langan transformed Kettners into one of London's most fashionable restaurants with celebrity clientele including Princess Diana and Mick Jagger.
Today, Kettners is owned by Nick Jones - founder of private members' club Soho House - who has restored much of its original charm while adding his own contemporary touches. The restaurant now serves modern European cuisine using locally sourced ingredients while the Champagne Bar offers an extensive selection of bubbles from around the world.
Kettners also boasts several private dining rooms which are perfect for intimate dinners or larger events such as weddings or corporate functions. Each room is individually decorated with period features such as fireplaces and chandeliers adding to their charm.
In addition to its food and drink offerings, Kettners also hosts regular events such as live music and cabaret shows. The restaurant's history and unique atmosphere make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.
