Koichi Kawai was an inventor and engineer who had a passion for music. He began his career as an apprentice at Yamaha before starting his own company in Hamamatsu, Japan. In 1935, he introduced Japan's first grand piano action made entirely from wood. This innovation set a new standard for piano manufacturing and established Kawai as a leader in the industry.
Over the years, Kawai continued to innovate with new materials and designs that improved sound quality and playability. In 1955, they introduced their first upright pianos with aluminum alloy hammers instead of traditional felt hammers.
