I am 72 and passed out from heat exhaustion after I went to the gym. When I fell I bumped my head, no big deal little bump, drop of blood. The heat exhaustion was the problem and I felt awufl. The EMS came and took my BP/Blood sugar/EKG/Temp. They recommended they give me an IV and take me to the JC ER. I declined because of the 600.00 ambulance fee. My medicare will pay most of it but it is a waste of our medicare dollars. My friend drove me the 8 minute ride for a lot less.
At the JC ER they insisted on doing all those test that had been done 30 minutes before I arrived: EKG, Blood sugar, BP, temp, and they also took urine. More medicare dollars but still no IV.
I worked med serv in a steel mill for 20 years and handled literally dozens and dozens of heat exhaustion cases. I needed an IV...nothing else. But they wouldn't even give me water, though they didn't seem to mind me drinking out of the fountain.
Next they wanted to do a cat scan for the bump so I declined. I didn't come in there for the bump on my head. I understand that it can be more than you think it is...so can bumping your head on a cabinet: people have bumped their heads and gone on and died a few hours later; still: you rarely run for a cat scan when you do it, right? I told them I understood their liability and was happy to sign the release, no prob.
Then they wanted to X-Ray my chest...no radiation please....that would not tell a thing. HEAT EXHAUSTION!!! A few minutes later the Dr. comes in and it starts out polite but she immediately commands, " I need you to sit on this table." I said, "Okay, on the edge?" "No! I need you up on it in the middle!" Not loud but curt. I immediately complied. Then she starts in.. I can't really treat you since you are refusing everything we try to do" FIRST EXAGGERATION/PREVARICATION: I described above the 4 test that I submitted to, 3 of which had been done within the hour....so I said, "No...you've treated me...I think I just needed saline..." then she tells me "You won't let me get a word in!" Obviously an exaggeration.
Yes, I DID interrupt her when she said the falsehood about me not letting them treat me. Am supposed to just let her make one false accusation or exaggeration after another (and boy, did she....) unchallenged??!
I asked, "Why do you say that?" and she said, "Well, I couldn't get you to sit down...." I already described, word-for-word about the seating and I gave her ZERO problem no attitude whatsoever: I was, in fact, caught totally unaware of her causticity until I had sat.
And believe me, there were more: She was spoiling or a fight...every time I tried to discuss something or explain why I did something or didn't do something it was because I was angry and "squirrelly" and uncooperative....had no problem other than they weren't treating the real problem until she came in. At that she walked out.
The obvious truth is she came in there with an attitude because I wouldn't let them run Medicare the bill up and put radiation in my chest when they wouldn't even do anything for the real problem. I didn't even get the tetanus shot which I agreed to for the slight cut on the bump on my head.
I accomplished nothing by going there except delaying my hydration which had already improved marvelously by this time from drinking water out of the fountain and later the sink in the exam room while waiting both cases in their presence yet they never offered me any liquid.
That doctor is clearly not all there. She knew that there was treatment to be offered and she refused it out of pure spite over some tests that had nothing to do with my condition. To me she's a big red flag and I will never accept treatment from her. I've personally seen her temper can come out of someone politely declining suggestions and then let that temper get in the way of the Hippocratic oath. I already know she's capable of standing by and not offering aid....what if she had a REAL reason to be angry?! I'd be afraid of any, "treatment," she offered.
