Love, love, LOVE the Iowa State Fair! Who doesn't?!? Greatest place there is to see what Iowa is all about, eat, drink, and people watch, ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!! Have been going the past 43+/- years, and enjoy it every time. Seeing the sites, hearing the sounds, tasting the tastes and even smelling the smells is like nothing else on earth! Everyone should make plans to experience the great Iowa State Fair at least once in his/her life!!
New guy that is running the fair is running it into the ground. It's his fault there is no historical race track any more. Promised a smaller one.(where is it). Where is the tractor pulls going to be. You could have offered family packs for the races. Way cheaper concessions. Just like during the fair you charge for the spot you charge to hook up electric and water you charge to disconnect electric and water then get a percentage of there take.and the gate entrance prices are ridiculous. The price for the spot should include utility hook up and disconnect. Smaller daily percentage smaller gate prices then concessions prices would go down people would buy more more people would come to the fair, what's that mean more money.

Having a horse show featuring his some very beautiful Hispanic riders. A large cultural influence and beautiful horses. Also having a psychic fair. There's always a lot of going on at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
You have to do it once! Take in all the sights. Appreciate the history. Give kudos to all the livestock farmers and families camped out with their show animals. Try the fair food and especially the things you can't find at other fairs (like Peppermint Bars). Don't bother with the rides unless you can get an all-you-can-ride special or something, because the rides are RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE! I've been once. Might go again, but it's off my bucket list now. The Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa has much the same feel but in a more digestible size, so I'll stick to that for now.
No campsites are allowed but clean, safe and beautiful grounds worth full hookups. All is maintained well and in great condition. Decent price for sites.

Absolutely love walking around the fairgrounds. The Iowa State Fair is the best!! Although even off season, they have several weekend activities. Great rental options. Lots of open space for walks!
I went for the flea market. The vendors were carried, lots of variety. I found everything I was looking for. Buttons, jewelry, vases, and several other impulse buys. The prices were great and there is a cafe with burgers fries etc. I had a lot of fun.
Alot of things to see and do. Great experience the only thing I would say bringing it down to a 4 is the cost. I can spend 500$ in an hour (easily).
