This was such a neat excursion for our family today. The exhibits were very informative but with lots of colors for the kids. Our favorite part was the center room that had fossils, bones, 100s of shells, etc. All labeled and available to touch and explore! It was so neat! It is free. The nature trail walk was nice...hot but nice..And we loved the laminated trail guides about the trees with guides labeled along the trail! We highly recommend it!

The exhibits and nature trail were easy to get around with a wheelchair. Lots of work done since last year after hurricane Michael. Looking forward to your restocking the tanks. Lots of great information on the Apalachicola Estuary, thanks!

When I visited this place the aquarium tanks were out of service due to a hurricane, but it was still a good visit. There are a lot of interesting things to look at. There is some very neat taxidermy. I m sure it would be even better if I got to see the aquatic life.

Clean facilities, nice walking trails and helpful staff. The view of the Bay is breathtaking. The Visitor Center is well designed and the restrooms are well maintained. Can buy sodas and has an elevator to get to the top floor for people with limited mobility.

Excellent walk on the boardwalk and estaurine museum/learning center! More than I expected but would have liked more of a guided tour of the center. Theater presentation about estuary basin was nice but would have benefited from a docent or some type of volunteer for questions afterward. Overall a good experience that I'm sure will be improved. Good time. Recommended.

We absolutely LOVE visiting ANERR. Last year we were able to participate in a turtle nest survey and actually saw hatchlings make their way to the ocean. It was an incredible experience. We've also attended the turtle talk for the last two years and learned something new each time. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly! And the visitor center is fabulous!

Small center packed with information and a few aquariums, all of the aquariums are very low so kids can easily see. This is definitely a shorter excursion than most, but it is definitely worth it. The best part is that it is free.

Don't forget to support the center if possible, I would recommend donating before you leave.

About Intern at Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) is a renowned research institution located in Eastpoint, Florida. The reserve's home is situated at 108 Island Drive (State Road 300) at Cat Point, and it serves as a hub for scientific research and education on the Apalachicola Bay ecosystem.

ANERR was established in 1979 as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The reserve covers over 246,000 acres of land and water, including estuaries, marshes, swamps, and uplands. It is one of the largest estuarine reserves in the United States.

The primary mission of ANERR is to promote scientific understanding and stewardship of the Apalachicola Bay ecosystem through research, monitoring, education, and outreach programs. The reserve works closely with local communities to develop sustainable management practices that balance economic development with environmental conservation.

ANERR's research programs cover a wide range of topics related to estuarine ecology and management. Scientists at ANERR study everything from water quality to fisheries management to climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems. They use cutting-edge technology such as remote sensing tools and DNA analysis techniques to better understand how natural systems function.

In addition to its research activities, ANERR also offers educational programs for students of all ages. The reserve hosts field trips for school groups where students can learn about estuary ecology firsthand by exploring local habitats like salt marshes or oyster reefs. ANERR also offers professional development opportunities for teachers so they can incorporate environmental science into their curricula.

ANERR's outreach efforts extend beyond formal education settings as well. The reserve hosts public events such as guided nature walks or birdwatching tours that allow visitors to experience the beauty of Apalachicola Bay while learning about its ecological importance.

Overall, ANERR plays a critical role in advancing our understanding of coastal ecosystems while promoting sustainable management practices that benefit both people and nature. Its location in Eastpoint makes it an ideal destination for anyone interested in learning more about Florida's unique coastal environments or getting involved with conservation efforts in their community.
