I recently immigrated to Calgary and prior to this I had participated in Pre arrival services. I did a lot of research but nothing prepares you for when you actually land. Now take this scenario and land in a pandemic and in winter- that is coming from the Tropics. There are many post arrival immigrant services available in Calgary and I have spoken with all of them. I felt a sense of disconnect with some and others tried their best to help as much as they thought they could because well it's in their best interest and they require the funding. I felt very unsettled my first few weeks here and considered going back to my home country while i tried to figure things out. When I communicated my fear, I felt shut out and shut down. I've met very rude (VERY RUDE) counsellors and I understand everyone has their own temperament and may be going through their own personal problems, nothing personal. Imagine navigating all alone to a new land and then meet rude, dismissive people. I contacted Immigrant service Calgary and even though it took them a while to get back to me, they finally did. I spoke with Luisa and felt a GENUINE connection. She listened to me, we laughed, were sad at some point- she SHOWED EMPATHY, and wore my shoe (figuratively of course). She gave me pertinent information and had a good idea of what my story is and the hurdles down the line. I have had to figure a lot of things out by myself and this is a no brainer, you have to do your own research because everybody's story is different and we are all different and have different paths. I wish I started my post arrival services with Immigrant service Calgary and if you do, ask for Luisa, she is fun and very charismatic and will get you ALL the information you need as you settle in your new home. Remember this is a journey, there's a lot of information to know, everybody has an opinion on what you should do and not do! Make sure the information you get is current and up to date and applies to your situation. The information is constantly changing and you need to keep abreast with this and Immigrant services Calgary will help you every step of the way because the truth of the matter is that sometimes, you just need someone to hold your hand while you take baby steps and immigrant service Calgary definitely does that for you. Welcome to Calgary, take a deep breath and the sky is your starting point. Good luck!
