All in all, Howard Community Center is a really good resource for the neighborhood, and the people that run the program are awesome. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars, I had my son go to pick up the food bank items, as we have both been out of work, and I had an appointment that morning, and when he brought the food home the bags were packed tight and mixed fruits/veggies and packaged items all together. The bananas and green peppers were mushed all over everything else. It was a disgusting mess, and all the bananas were wasted and one of the green peppers. It felt kind of like, "here, take the crap that we give you..." like a nasty attitude. I almost cried, because I don't WANT to ask for help, but I have to right now!

Receptionist had the worst customer service ever. She was unwelcoming, mean-spirited with a bad disposition. Thank God we were at the wrong address! If she represent the front, I can only imagine the rest of the place.

A center that is staffed by armatures and unprofessional people. The place offers no employment living skills or independent living skills programs. The facility basically is a shelter for the drug dealers and drug and alcohol addicted residents. There are no programs that work towards sobriety and non criminal behavior. The library is outdated the staff have very limited education and knowledge of mental illness. The center is popular due to its free food handouts once a week. Avoid

Awesome people working their butts off trying to create a better world for the population that our government is trying to squeeze out of existence. Seriously, the work they do here is amazing and I'm so grateful for their efforts. If you need help, go here. If you don't need help, please volunteer or donate a few bucks to keep them in operation.

I only walked in to get some flyers but the people are very receptive and helpful. I ended up volunteering for a place called a just Harvest there that's across the street from the place. I found it fascinating and the people welcoming and it was a pleasure. I will definitely be going back on a weekly basis. Everyone was very kind and loving and good to the patrons. My hour and a half two hours the couple hours that I spent their felt like 20 minutes. That I wanted to extend. There's a mixture of people that volunteer their each night is a different organizations one night there was a church from the Winnetka Presbyterian Church the next night it was from another church in Winnetka and the third night it was students from Oakton in Depaul. A lot of different people very well organized. They treat their patrons with respect and dignity and the volunteers to. I cannot wait to go back!

Great volunteer opportunity. They help a lot of people with ESL, GED, applying for LIHEAP, dentist, they have a food pantry twice a week, and daily snack pack available, even a pet food pantry. Many other services available. Call or walk in for available dates and times for services or volunteer opportunities.
