Homes for Our Troops: Building Homes, Rebuilding Lives
Homes for Our Troops is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that aims to help severely injured post-9/11 Veterans rebuild their lives by building and donating specially adapted custom homes nationwide. The organization was founded in 2004 by John Gonsalves, a contractor who wanted to give back to the brave men and women who have served our country.
The mission of Homes for Our Troops is simple yet powerful: to provide mortgage-free homes that are specially designed to meet the unique needs of each Veteran. These homes are equipped with features such as wider halls and doorways, roll-in showers, and other adaptations that make them accessible and comfortable for Veterans with disabilities.
Since its inception, Homes for Our Troops has built over 300 homes in 42 states across the United States. Each home is built using donated materials, labor, and services from local businesses and volunteers. This allows the organization to keep costs low while ensuring that each home meets the highest standards of quality.
The impact of these homes goes far beyond just providing a place to live. For many Veterans who have been severely injured in combat or training accidents, these homes represent a new beginning – a chance to start over after facing unimaginable challenges.
One such Veteran is Army Sergeant First Class Jared Bullock. In 2013, Jared lost both his legs above the knee while serving in Afghanistan. After returning home from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, he struggled with everyday tasks like getting around his house in his wheelchair.
Thanks to Homes for Our Troops, Jared now has a specially adapted home that allows him greater independence and mobility. "It's given me my life back," he says of his new home.
Jared's story is just one example of how Homes for Our Troops is making a difference in the lives of our nation's heroes. The organization has received numerous accolades over the years for its work on behalf of Veterans.
In addition to building homes, Homes for Our Troops also provides financial planning assistance and support services such as family retreats and adaptive sports programs. These programs help Veterans adjust to their new lives after injury by providing them with resources they need not only survive but thrive.
