Great place to get good sandwiches, burgers and drinks
Service was great. But the food was ridiculously over priced and didn't take good at all. We got the BBQ sample platter. It was about $25 and we didn't get that much food. My wife and I shared it and we both were pretty hungry after that. I mean for $25 should of been more food. The food tasted like it was cooked in kerosene or something.... so the atmosphere was great, service was great, the food tasted really bad and was WAY overpriced.
Without sounding like I'm giving a bad review out seems like Holmes Plate has slowly begun to decline. The food is good, but more and more things have been removed from the menu
I know I gave it a 3 star rating, and some will take that to mean "less than satisfactory." But this place is actually pretty good. The problem is that they don't really have a specific thing that puts them above the other places in town. They have a lot of options, none of which I will say is "poor." But having sampled every place in Corning, anything you select on the menu I can point to a place that is THE place in town to get that thing. Hamburgers? Check out the place one block down. Wings? There's a place in Riverside that has the best ones. Sweet Potato fries? On the opposite corner. Beer selection? Eh... I don't want to start a fight, here.
Holmes Plate, in my opinion, has an assorted selection of various menu items that are GOOD. If there's anything I can say Holmes Plate is the best at, is having a menu with many different options that don't suck. If you're hungry, but you can't narrow down what you're hungry for, I'd say this is the best place to go. If you or your spouse is pregnant, this is a perfect pick.
So, don't take my 3 star review to indicate anything is substandard here. Just that there's nothing in particular that is head and shoulders above the rest of the district.
Great atmosphere! Staff are fantastic and owner is out mingling with guest ensuring the best experience. We continue to go back since the menu is delicious and there is always something new. Love that they support local brews, makes even more enjoyable. Lots of homemade surprises with no shortcuts.
Amazing food! The staff is super friendly and the place has a great atmosphere.
The bartender/owner is so great! He kept us laughing the whole night and was so nice to talk to. We loved this bar and will be back the next time we re in town!
Best cornbread on the planet! BBQ pulled pork rivals what I've had in St. Louis. Owner is friendly and will do what it takes to satisfy you. Loved it and will be back!
Go out of your way to stop here.. Best sports bar in Corning and the best burger this side of the Mississippi..
The food is very good and the staff are always friendly!! Great place!
I was very disappointed. The atmosphere was unpleasant. The booth was not anchored and every time people in the next booth moved our booth did also. The bar area was extremely loud and filled the dining area with bad kareoke. The service was slow. The orders were incorrect. Food was bland. I had the prime rib special and it had been cut incorrectly. Looked like a small portion and then a few extra ounces cut onto plate to make the weight.
Positives the resteraunt had a good selection of beer it also had tiny play area with some things for kids. People seem to also enjoy drawing on the paper on the table. They were able to substitute apple sause rather than fries.
Over priced, poor service. Too many great restaurants on Market Street to be like that.
The staff were super friendly and the food was absolutely amazing! If I lived in Corning, this would be a daily trip for me!
Excellent for families with 5-9 yr. olds. Staff is aware and does extra for kids. Got our 5 kids orders out first. Owner served. Took a real interest in everybody. Good is right size and good.
Great place to get good sandwiches, burgers and drinks
Great food and drinks
Stop here every time in Corning.
How awesome is it that the owner is there to great you and say hello! That is service. Good food, fun staff, great music.
Service was good. Barbeque was pretty good. The cornbread on the other hand? Best in North America.
Nice place, good service, smoker right next to where we sat. Great beer selection.
I love the burgers here and the variety of them. I enjoy different flavors and they cover that for sure. I ve been there three times and each time I have had the same waiter and each time I leave disappointed with the service. If the service doesn t improve I may not return.
Good BBQ and burgers. Wraps, sandwiches all with quality ingredients.
Outstanding ribs!! Very good service. Owner Brendon stopped by my table to introduce himself and found he was a veteran which makes me happy to patronize another vets business!!!! Plan to return on my next visit.
I had dinner here with my son on July 22 after doing some hiking in the area, having had the place recommended to us by a very friendly local who saw us looking at the menu of another restaurant. The only good thing I could say about the place was that the staff is very, very friendly and courteous.....That being said, the food was grossly overpriced; this was also the only time my son was unenthusiastic about a pulled pork barbecue meal. No napkins were available at the table, a roll of paper towels sufficed ( they blew all over from the ceiling fan ) . Food portions were small, and the preparation definitely uninspired. This is strictly an easygoing, locals restaurant; nothing especially cozy or inviting about it at all, beyond the view from outside looking in. The hosts of our B and B seconded our opinion, and were firm about their never having recommended the place to us. I do highly recommend the local McDonalds on Dennison; very clean, and exceptional service.
Friendly staff, fantastic smoked wings and drop dead ribs!
Owner is a great guy and Ben provides amazing service. Food is very tasty, try the Brendan burger but the smoked prime rib is the best.
Only a 3 because the service sucked.
Burger was one of the best I've had.
Amazing homemade smoked brisket, ribs and cornbread!
The place on the menus claimed to have the best rated burgers, but when my burger came it was way over-cooked based on what I had asked for. Other people in my party had similar issues, with brisket that was tough and burgers that could only be considered well-done. The atmosphere of the place was nice, with an open window that looks out onto the streets of Corning, and paper on the tables you can draw on, but the food was not as great as I had hoped. We did not go at a busy time either, arriving at an early dinner time on a Thursday.
I'm a local and have ALWAYs had good food and service here. Tonight was exceptional in that the staff was kind and patient towards our unannounced group of ten people.
We were originally going to try to eat at a "new" restaurant but upon arrival to the "new" place we were turned away and not even aloud to wait in the bar area!!!! Even though we called ahead!!!!
So we went to Holmes Plate hoping we could wait at the bar area and be split between a few tables.
They were more than happy to do so. The bar tender and staff busted their butts. They never complained or were rude. Not even with our group congested the service area that the waitresses need to use to get to the food. When we got our table our waitress Eileen was very accommodating to our very unorganized group. Eileen kept a smile on her face and kept all the random bills and requests straight. I don't know how she did that! She was very talented and handled our group like a professional. She worked way longer than her assigned shift just to be sure we had what we needed.
We are very grateful for the amazing service and food! EVERYONE there was working diligently like a well oiled machine. The restaurant has great food and a great team of people! Thanks again!
Great food with excellent sevice! I try something new and have never been disappointed. The tomato jack soup is great
You had better be Hungry! The staff is as good as the beers too!
Stopped in for lunch and we really loved it. Great place for bbq. Love that everything is made from scratch in house, even the potato chips! Had tomato jack soup and pulled pork sandwich which were both fantastic. If you enjoy bbq check it out!
Click on the "SEE INSIDE" image on this page and you'll get an interactive Google virtual tour of the restaurant. You got to hand it to the owner of Holmes Plate 54 - he sure knows good marketing technology when he sees it!

Always my fave when I'm in town. Going tomorrow for lunch. Love the crab cake.
I sat down and thought it was going to be beknownst to the dome. The demon curry coo doo was to die for...will definitely be coming back in the near future. Highly recommended.
Best burgers in Corning. Open face in the Summer ..to Bridge street.
Pretty quick service. Tons of food, awesome BBQ sauce (would have loved to have it available on the table). BUT, my husband and I both ordered brisket , toughest brisket I have ever had!
We were passing thru Corning + had a recommendation from a local. We were greeted by the owner, Brendan who was very involved w taking care of the customers. Great selection of drafts w several locals. A very attentive bartender with good suggestions. Nice sized meals with quality ingredients. Owner checked in with us after meal. Would go back in a heartbeat!
Bathrooms backed up, told they were out of food 25 minutes after ordering. Glad we don't have to go back
The food here depends on the day you visit. I've had great food and I've had average food. I'm not a fan of the "new fries" or what I call spiral grease sticks. The ambiance is fun and the servers try to do a good job. The tables are covered with brown paper and you're given crayons to play with. Did the adult coloring book craze start here? You should try them just stay away from the "new fries".
Food was amazing -- we got the Reuben, mac and cheese, and the bonfire burger. Everything was delicious, as were the house made potato chips.
I got two to-go orders -- ribs dinner, brisket dinner. total cost was about $42 incl. tax. Both entrees were a let-down. On the way home in the car I was hungry so I had the corn bread, fair, oily, very little flavor. My ribs were a generous helping, but they were far from fall-off-the-bone. BBQ sauce is very subjective, but I did not care for this flavor. Coleslaw was good, not great; glad it wasn't too sweet as is often the case. The baked beans were a hit -- good taste and texture. The bonus side salad was fine, simple. My wife said the same for hers but the beef brisket was was a bit stringy and tough and neither of us liked the flavor. Her sides were the same and her opinion of the sides was the same as mine. All was edible, but I won't be going back -- except... the draft beer bar looked tempting. I'd stop in for that next time I'm on Market Street. Was hoping to write something glowing, but it's 2.5 stars out of 5 for this diner.
Unique and delicious food! Nice atmosphere as well. Super friendly staff.
This restaurant is wonderful! I was a regular customer in the past, mainly for the firehouse burger and the Brambleberry Slushies, and have been working here for the past couple months. I have never loved working in a restaurant so much! The atmosphere and the entire staff is phenomenal. Brendan and Kim are absolutely wonderful to work for! The food is absolutely amazing! I recommend the firehouse burger:)
I request that the reviews below be disregarded. I will defend this restaurant and the owners to any person. During my time as a customer as well as an employee, I have NEVER been treated as terrible as described in previous reviews. In fact, this is the only restaurant I have worked in that as treated me fairly. The employee turnover rate is due to the people being hired rather than the owners. Incompetent people that get hired and refuse to show up for their shifts are not allowed to give a fair review. And as for the food--it is GREAT. Holmes Plate is not a corporate restaurant like Olive Garden and Applebees; by this, I mean you WILL NOT get your food for free by fabricating the smallest complaint. As a former employee of Olive Garden, I can honestly say I have seen/waited on these people that make false complaints in order to get free food. This scam doesn't work at Holmes Plate. Reviews by people that do not get their way are also unfair.
I am not rating this restaurant as Excellent in all categories because I work here, but rather because I absolutely love everything about it. The crew that I work with is great, cooks and servers/bartenders. All of the food is made on the premises, with the exception of the chicken fingers. This is one of the best restaurants Market Street has to offer!!
This place is great! Affordable, fast, comfortable, and great place for kids. Delicious food and beverage selection, too.
BBQ, beer and eclectic versions of bar food. Have a beer nirvana...
If only I could give less stars. Wait staff was great. Couldn't have asked for a better server. Shout-out to Amanda. Well my girlfriend ordered a medium rare steak. She receives a well done steak and almost immediately a gentleman came out and took her plate (fries and all) and assured us he'd bring a new one out. He kept his word about 20 minutes later another well done steak ends up on the table. Another waitress whom was working the same night even commented on how cooked it was. The waitress, after asking (who I believe to be the owner) what to do came back and told us we can get something else on the menu but we can't have steak because her 2nd one was the last one. My girlfriend asked if she could eat her fries and out waitress relayed (after the breakdown her boss caused) that we would have to pay for them. Long story short she walked out hungry because the owner of the establishment didn't want to make things right and handle the situation. Not I or anybody else I know will ever visit this establishment again
The food was delicious and the service was quick and very personable!
Always my fave when I'm in town. Going tomorrow for lunch. Love the crab cake.
The food was excellent. A great, friendly atmosphere. We will definitely eat here again.
Loved the playroom for our kids to hang out in while waiting for the food! They also enjoyed putting art on the table The food was good, a little over priced. Very friendly staff and a great place for a quality meal
I was very disappointed. The atmosphere was unpleasant. The booth was not anchored and every time people in the next booth moved our booth did also. met owner, loved the place, food was above excellent,
Burgers were awesome service was great!! Will be back for the BBQ soon!!!
my wife daughter and i stopped in. the look from the street was amazing and the menu really drew us in.
we were so badly disappointed. from the service (took them 20 minutes before even asking for our drink order) to the food (got the wrong food and when they took it back they just doctored what we had and gave it back to us) it was completely sub-par. i have high hopes for restaurants/ brewers like this because the food is usually amazing.
The burger, topped with pulled pork and coleslaw, was amazing. I thought it was a little overpriced for what you received though, and our server never asked if we needed refills, even though it wasn't that busy.
I sat down and thought it was going to be beknownst to the dome. The demon curry coo doo was to die for...will definitely be coming back in the near future. Highly recommended.
Very good food, casual atmosphere and kid friendly. Enjoyed the local brews and devoured a huge, delicious burger. Open air seats by the window are best and the servers were very friendly.
Great food! We are definitely going to come back here!
I really enjoy coming here for the burgers. Wait staff is also very nice and friendly.
Excellent food, great service. Would definitely come back if in Corning.
Amazing food. Amazing staff. Ask for Maryann she is the best
Great food...Smoked Prime Rib #todiefor AWESOME service, attentive staff who were friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to please! The owner; Brendan Holmes was very pleasant and went above and beyond to make my experience at Holmes Plate memorable as well as enjoyable! I feel Brendan is an incredible owner who is knowledgeable of what it takes to make the customer happy and I would recommend Holmes Plate to anyone who wants more for their buck! Good job sir, Holmes Plate is a grand slam in my book.
If you like burgers you will love this place they have a huge selection of custom burgers. It is my favorite place for burgers in the Corning-Elmira area. If they came with fries instead of chips I would give it 5 stars! The decor is pretty cool some might not like it but do. The owner is there alot and always comes around and asks how it was.
The Hp54 Loaded Nachos are amazing the fried chips with pulled pork, chili, melted cheddar, jalapenos, sour cream and salsa on them are great. I do which they were more generous on the size but not bad still! Its my favorite appetizer! I have a had a number of their burgers like the Western, smoked briscuit sandwich, the black & blue, Carolina and Tex-Mex to name a few and I haven't had one I didnt like yet. I have had a few of the salads they are ok but nothing special. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves burgers!! It is a must stop if you are in the area
You had better be Hungry! The staff is as good as the beers too!
The food is very good and the staff are always friendly!! Great place!
Good beer, food n service. Friendly staff and patrons
Their food has improved a lot over the years and their craft beer selection on tap is excellent. Great place to eat with kids because they cover the tables with large sheets of paper and give you crayons to draw on the paper with. Prices are very reasonable also.
