Historic Columbia: Preserving the Rich Heritage of Columbia and Richland County
Historic Columbia is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to preserving the historic and cultural heritage of Columbia and Richland County for over 50 years. The organization was founded in 1961 by a group of concerned citizens who were alarmed by the rapid destruction of historic buildings in downtown Columbia. Since then, Historic Columbia has grown into one of the most respected preservation organizations in the country, with a mission to protect, preserve, and promote the historic resources of our community.
The organization's work is focused on four main areas: preservation, education, advocacy, and events. Through these efforts, Historic Columbia seeks to ensure that future generations will be able to appreciate and learn from our rich history.
Preservation
One of Historic Columbia's primary goals is to preserve historic buildings and sites throughout the city. The organization owns several properties that have been restored or are currently being restored to their original condition. These include:
- The Robert Mills House & Gardens: This National Historic Landmark was built in 1823 by Robert Mills, one of America's first native-born architects. Today it serves as a museum showcasing life in antebellum South Carolina.
- Hampton-Preston Mansion & Gardens: Built in 1818 by wealthy planter Ainsley Hall for his daughter Caroline Hampton Hall Preston, this mansion served as headquarters for Union General William T. Sherman during his occupation of Columbia.
- Mann-Simons Site: This property was home to several generations of an African American family from before Emancipation until well into the twentieth century.
In addition to these properties owned by Historic Columbia itself, the organization also works with private property owners throughout Richland County to help them preserve their own historic homes or businesses.
Education
Another important aspect of Historic Columbia's work is education. The organization offers a variety of programs designed to teach people about local history and architecture:
- Guided tours: Visitors can take guided tours through many different parts of downtown Columbia including Main Street Districts such as Congaree Vista.
- School programs: Teachers can bring their students on field trips where they will learn about local history through hands-on activities like candle-making or butter-churning.
- Workshops & lectures: Throughout each year there are workshops held at various locations around town which cover topics such as genealogy research techniques or how-to guides on restoring old homes.
Advocacy
Historic preservation often requires advocacy efforts aimed at convincing government officials or private developers not only that preserving old buildings is important but also economically beneficial for communities too! To this end,
Historic Colombia works closely with local government officials at all levels (city council members up through state legislators) advocating policies which support preservation efforts while also promoting economic development opportunities within those same areas where historical structures exist today!
Events
Finally,
Historic Colombia hosts numerous events throughout each year designed both entertain visitors while also educating them about local history! Some examples include:
- Jubilee Festival Of Heritage - Held annually since 1978 this festival celebrates African American culture featuring music food vendors arts crafts demonstrations storytelling children’s activities more!
- Candlelight Tours - During December visitors can tour some beautifully decorated homes along with other festive holiday-themed activities!
