The Hepatitis Education Project: Empowering Communities through Education and Advocacy
The Hepatitis Education Project (HEP) is a non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington that aims to provide education, support, and advocacy for individuals affected by viral hepatitis. Since its establishment in 1993, HEP has been at the forefront of raising awareness about hepatitis B and C, promoting prevention strategies, and improving access to care for those living with these diseases.
At the core of HEP's mission is the belief that education is key to preventing the spread of viral hepatitis. Through various outreach programs and initiatives, HEP seeks to empower communities with knowledge about risk factors, testing options, treatment options, and ways to live healthy lives despite a diagnosis of hepatitis B or C.
One of HEP's flagship programs is its Hepatitis Support Group which meets every Thursday from 12:30-2:00 PM at their office located at 1621 S. Jackson St Unit 201 Seattle WA 98144. This group provides a safe space for individuals living with viral hepatitis to share their experiences and receive emotional support from others who understand what they are going through. The group also features guest speakers who provide information on topics such as nutrition, medication adherence, mental health management etc.
In addition to its support group program,Hepatitis Education Project offers free testing services for both Hepatitis B & C on Mondays from 12:30-5:30 PM . Testing services are available by appointment only so it’s important you call ahead (206)732-0311 or email info@hepeducation.org before coming in.
HEP also conducts community outreach events throughout the year where they provide educational materials about viral hepatitis along with free testing services. These events are held in partnership with local organizations such as community centers , churches , mosques etc., where people can come together learn more about this disease while getting tested if they want .
Another important aspect of HEP's work is advocacy efforts aimed at improving access to care for those living with viral hepatitis. This includes working closely with policymakers at all levels - local,state,and federal -to ensure that funding is available for research into new treatments,cures,and vaccines; advocating for policies that make it easier for people living with these diseases get access affordable healthcare;and supporting efforts aimed at reducing stigma associated with having a diagnosis of hep B or C .
