HE2RO: Pioneering Health Economics and Epidemiology Research in South Africa
HE2RO, or the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office, is a leading research institution based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Established in 2006, HE2RO has been at the forefront of health economics and epidemiology research in the country, working tirelessly to find innovative solutions to some of South Africa’s most pressing public health challenges.
At HE2RO, our mission is simple: to improve the health and well-being of people living in South Africa through rigorous research that informs policy and practice. We believe that by combining cutting-edge methods from both health economics and epidemiology, we can generate insights that are not only scientifically robust but also practically relevant.
Our team of researchers includes experts from diverse backgrounds such as economics, statistics, medicine, public health, sociology and anthropology. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to tackle complex issues from multiple angles while ensuring that our work remains grounded in real-world contexts.
One of our key strengths at HE2RO is our ability to conduct large-scale studies using data from various sources such as surveys, administrative records or clinical trials. Our researchers have extensive experience with data management and analysis techniques which enable us to extract meaningful insights even from complex datasets.
Over the years we have conducted numerous studies on a wide range of topics including HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment strategies; tuberculosis diagnosis; maternal-child health interventions; non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention; mental health services delivery models; healthcare financing mechanisms among others.
Our work has been published in top-tier academic journals such as The Lancet Global Health , PLOS Medicine , AIDS , Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (JAIDS), among others. We have also presented our findings at international conferences such as International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science (IAS), Conference on Retroviruses & Opportunistic Infections (CROI), International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) among others.
At HE2RO, we are committed to building capacity in health economics and epidemiology research in South Africa. We offer training opportunities for students and young researchers through our internship program, which provides hands-on experience in various aspects of research such as study design, data collection, analysis and dissemination.
We also collaborate with other institutions both locally and internationally to leverage expertise and resources. Our partners include universities such as the University of Witwatersrand , University of Cape Town , Harvard University , Imperial College London among others; government agencies such as the National Department of Health (NDoH), National Treasury ; international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) among others.
In conclusion, HE2RO is a leading research institution that is making significant contributions to health economics and epidemiology research in South Africa. Our multidisciplinary approach, rigorous methods, extensive experience with data management and analysis techniques enable us to generate insights that are scientifically robust yet practically relevant. We are committed to improving the health outcomes of people living in South Africa through our work while building capacity for future generations of researchers.
