We love Hawthorn academy! My first grader hated kindergarten, and I was worried about real school. Totally unfounded , her reading has improved greatly she loves her teacher, and is always looking for "random acts of kindness" to do. As an IB school, they focus in the academics, but also in their students making an impact in their community. My kids equally love fun Friday and Math night, thanks Hawthorn Academy.

hawthorn academy is nothing but mediocre education and reasons for your children to hat authority. since this review is negative, any names will be censored as opposed to a positive one. If you want your child to have a jump start in academics, do not choose this school, though its size may mislead you the school in reality cannot afford buses and cafeteria food that hasn't been processed into oblivion. the school also attempts to make the kids feel a sense of power and involvement with their student government system, but in reality all it is is deciding what clothes they should be allowed to wear for one day instead of the uniform. some teachers use intimidation as a means to stop students from making errors, which i think should not be acceptable. the middle school students are also expected to remember concepts from the beginning of the year flawlessly at the end of the year without any reviewing whatsoever. so all in all, before you sign your kid up for this school, keep in mind the environment of this school

We have been at Hawthorn since the first year it opened. This school has been organized and on top of things since the get go. I have always had good communication with the teachers, and all have been very helpful with any needs my kids have had. The special education teachers are wonderful, and each of my children have thrived here. We have loved it.

Hawthorn academy has been an absolute blessing for our child. It has helped them blossom into a child that loves school and is motivated to be an integral part of the school community. The teachers at Hawthorn have been wonderful to work with and are always willing to help their students excel. We re so thankful to have found this school community. We highly recommend Hawthorn Academy for anyone looking for a great K-9 school!

This school is probably one of the worst school's I have sent my kids to. I talked to several of the teachers in the middle school and in elementary and none of them (that i talked to) were even interested in their students progress. I have sent my kids to many other schools due to our recent moving, and this one was the absolute worst.

We have been at Hawthorn Academy since the day they opened and have been pleased with the education my children are receiving. I especially appreciate all Amalie Harmon does for my kids. She is always willing to help my kids to improve, learn and catch up. Thank you for all you do for our family.
Also, Ms. Mcintosh took time yesterday to sit with me and my son to explain his math assignment. It was well after 4pm, but she did not seem hurried but instead genuonly interested in helping him master the concepts. She has done this other times as well. I appreciate the time these teachers put into helping my kids!

My daughter just started at Hawthorn this year and so far she loves it. She really enjoys her teachers and all the learning she is doing. Her previous school used uniforms with the school logo which was more costly and not safe for strangers to know her school name if we went out for errands after school. The uniforms at Hawthorn are so cute and are very affordable because you can buy them anywhere like Target or walmart. I also love the security measures to get inside.

this school is O.K but it makes TERRIBLE choices, and some of the teachers there are terrible.
they spend money on useless things, and then say they don't have enough funding for small things.
some of there teachers don't know how to do there own jobs.
many students there hate authority.
they are WAY to strick about there uniform.
the students have no voice.
and recently students have been rebelling against authority, and they made EVERYTHING WORSE FOR EVERYONE by taking away bathroom rights.
they dont give you enough time to eat if you are not in the 9th grade, and they get to but in line.
I HATE IT HERE I CANT WAIT TO LEAVE HONESTLY.
just so many things i could list.....

Overall dis skool iz prety grate. it relly teached mi lots uv stuffs. Duh techers ar rely grate. I tink da bestest ting I learnd wuz how to spel.

Just kidding.

I have been going here for 5 years, ever since it opened. I am currently in ninth grade. I know a lot of the reviews say it is great, while others say it was awful. I think it just depends on what you want in a school. It has smaller classes than the average elementary and junior high schools, which I personally like. Proof of this is that I practically know everyone's names in the ninth grade. The teachers are very supportive and are always willing to help you. You can actually ask them questions during class without waiting for them to answer 30 other student's questions before yours. Their sports programs are well organized. They are not extremely competitive (but still good), which makes it easier to make the team. FEAR THE SOCCER TEAM! :)
Yes, the recesses are short but that is because they have to give 10 grades their own recesses in only a few hours. The uniforms may be awful and stuffy but you get used to them. And admit it, they help students concentrate and lots of other things, like no bullying. Almost all of their school lunches are delicious, but some of them can be pretty strange (DON'T EAT THE GRILLED CHEESE!). And if you read that one person's review who talked about buying extra credit, they got rid of that. From what I have heard, the homework schedule is a bit more rigorous than that of public junior high or elementary schools. In conclusion, I think that this school is awesome in many ways.
Go eagles! (Ugh. Why did we have to be the eagles? that is SO mainstream.)

I was a student here from 7-8th grade. My experience was of two faculty members accepting me and the rest including students were at best ignorant and at worse fearful and hateful of who I am. As a transgender female to male student I understand my experience is different but I still think this was something that should have been addressed when I brought it up to faculty members.

We love Hawthorn Academy. I have a daughter to whom learning comes fairly easily. Hawthorn Academy does not allow her to get bored or complacent. On the other hand, her younger sister requires more time and different avenues/strategies. In her case, the school does not allow her to get frustrated or fall further behind. I love how they care for and teach my daughters according to their different needs.
From a parent who is heavily involved and close to the action, I give Hawthorn Academy five stars.

My second student has been there since Kindergarten and will complete this year as a 9th grader who will go on to High School fully prepared to excel there and in college!!!!

We love Hawthorne!!! This is a great school. I have been very happy with our choice to pull our child from Joel P Jensen. If you are looking for a school for your child to fluff through this is not a good choice for you. There is a lot of homework, expectations for the students and parents. The teachers are young, fresh and hard working. The sports programs are adequate and they provide mandatory study hall twice a week. The other children that attend this school are clean, well behaved, there to learn and life up to the expectations of their environment.
This is preparation for college, employment, and adulthood people how do things work at your employment? Are you expected to dress and behave appropriately? The only issue I have is I do not know where I will place my child for high school after this wonderful Jr. High charter school experience I cannot imagine sending her back to our shabby excuse for public education.

I have been at this school for 9 years. The academics and environment is a force of nature, and the teachers and staff are very encouraging. They push us to do our very best everyday and they push us to excel. In both elementary and middle school they have multiple people there to help the students figure out a problem in a different way if they don't understand it. I am about to go into high school and I already feel like I'm ready. Even though some classes are a little bit difficult they are helping us improve. I am almost a straight A student due to this. The teachers always allow us to come after school and get help, in fact they encourage it.We also have AQ couple sports teams, a cheer team, a ballroom dance team, and a peer leadership class ran by a phenomenal teacher(MRS.GEORGE).
The cafeteria workers are very kind as well and try to accommodate to everyones needs. The whole faculty is fun and they try to get to know every student. Some students even make suggestions to the board and faculty for instance recently our student body president(kbryn Iwuh) found a compromise to have jackets in class, he made a petition and set dates to talk to the board. There is also multiple art and music classes.

Good school, although everyone that's saying its a bad school are the people that won't be quiet when the teacher asks us to be quiet. PLUS, everyone is friends with each other (MOSTLY), like this one special eds kid that has a loud voice, is friends with the people you would expect to hate him.

This school was a very traumatic, and awful 9 years of my life. I regret not asking my parents to let me go to a different school. This schools education system is horrible, and most of the teachers don't care about kids problems. So many kids get away with so many things, especially staff's kids. And this school has little clubs/activities for kids that don't enjoy sports, or actual official ones that aren't bootleg. Please if you want to do your child good, don't go here for god sakes.

We love our students here. We push them to be their best every bit as much as we push ourselves to meet their individual needs and improve our own teaching practices. We have the most ideal parents as well. They are involved with their children's education and advocate for their students in a most helpful and courteous way. The administration has done a terrific job at hiring the top teachers out there. The administration has sweat blood and tears to stretch our dollars to provide the most and the highest quality that we can for our students. There is no where else I would send my own children. After leaving Hawthorn, any high school in any subject is a piece of cake. From the most gifted child to the one who struggles, they all come back saying the same thing: We did an amazing job of preparing them for what was to come. Thanks Hawthorn for letting me teach Utah's best and brightest!

I don't know what to say about this school anymore...

I don't know what to say about this school anymore. I'm having a really hard time enjoying myself at any time while I'm here. The education is great, they really teach us what we need to know, and help us learn it, unlike other middle schools. But I think the amount of work they give us is absurd. Each teacher acts as though they are the only teacher that is giving out homework. I don't see how they expect us to do all the work we are given, and still have time to do extracurricular activities, and still have time for ourselves. And I know there are some people who manage it all, but everyone is different, and some people are busier than others. Also, I have gotten in trouble multiple times for wearing socks that weren't in dress code. SOCKS! What is the problem with wearing striped socks? The dress code here is not something I enjoy whatsoever. Also, we aren't allowed to wear jackets (unless they are school approved, but most kids don't like the design of the jackets and no one wants to pay $30+ just for a jacket that they will only wear in school), which is getting kids in trouble every single day. I guarantee that almost every teacher has to tell at least one kid to take their jacket off, and sometimes it wastes class time. Life at this school would be a lot easier if jackets were allowed to be worn. Teachers would be less frustrated, along with kids. Also, majority of the adult/recess aids obviously don't know what they are doing. I have been thrown around at lunch, and an aid just walked right on past. It was obvious she saw, but she just walked on. The aids can apparently tell kids to get off the bleachers at lunch, but they can't tell kids to get off another. Anyways, I dislike going to this school overall. There are some things that I really appreciate about this school, like certain teachers, people, and the way we are educated (kinda). But there are obviously some things they could change about this school to make it better for the kids coming in the near years. Also, there is a rule that if you don't have any hall passes, you can't go to the bathroom without getting a lunch detention. Even if we have to go really bad, there is a punishment for needing to use the restroom. Why? Kids can't even use the freaking bathroom because of this stupid rule.

I am in 9th grade and I started in 6th grade. This school has helped me so much. I feel prepared for any high-school I attend. Mrs. Casper is one of the best teachers I have had. She has stayed until 5 30 pm after school to help me with the math so I could prepare for a test because I was out sick for a week. Another great teacher is Mrs. George. She is the 7th grade Language Arts teacher and the Peer Leadership teacher. She gives good constructive criticism and is very helpful when needed. She is also very funny and very kind. She is always there to hear you vent if you really need it. I love this school and all of the teachers. I would recommend that if you want your child to get a good education and a good social experience I would send them to Hawthorn Academy.

If your child has a learning difference, stay far ...

If your child has a learning difference, stay far far away. The two special education teachers are new to the profession and know very little about their jobs. The elementary school special education teacher is angry, rude and uninformed. She sees these students as problems that wreck her day. She knows absolutely nothing about dyslexia, which will account for roughly 80% of her students. She also blames the teachers for being non supportive and just complaining about these kids. The principal explains the curriculum in a muddled way as if she has no idea what the IB program is about and focuses more on the core curriculum. There is no overall philosophy for children with learning differences, which will easily account for at least 20% of the normal population. Rather these students are viewed as holding back the excellence of their school. This, of course, is because no one at the school has any clue how talented these kids are. The head of the special education department at BYU, Dr. Gordon Gibb, says that 90% of what needs to be done for these students is to ensure that regular classroom teachers use good pedagogy: multi sensory, explicit, and well planned. If your kid is a little different, they are not honored here but are subject to backroom gossip. I saw one teacher belittle a child at the front desk as a way of discipling this child and everyone acted like this was normal. It baffles me how they think that they are encouraging an international viewpoint when they are so narrow minded and inexperienced in the basic tools of teaching. I am astonished they are opening a second school. This is a reflection more of the oversized regular public schools in the area rather than the quality of this school.

This school does nothing to help against bullying. They say they do not tolerate any type of harassment from one student to another, but they do absolutely NOTHING to stop it. I left this school due to a bullying issue last year that was not stopped no matter how many times my parents or I contacted the school administration. The only good thing about this school is Miss Salli, the counselor.

If you are a child of one of the teachers or faculty you are treated like royalty, otherwise you may be treated like the scum in the toilets. If you don't treat the entitled children of the faculty like royalty then you may as well just sit at the back of the class and enjoy the failing grade you "deserve"

The "director" is a paid administrator funded in part by all the box tops you spend countless hours gathering and clipping. Hope you enjoy child labor.

I attended this school from 2nd grade to 9th grade...

I attended this school from 2nd grade to 9th grade. And I can tell you those 7 years were the longest years of my life. For starters let me tell you what this school lacks... good teachers, good admin, money, fun, how to teach kids, how to handle kids, how to be a charter school just for starters. Middle school here was very small and a very unique experience. There were like 250 kids in the middle school so if you don't like them, you have to stick with them. There were some good teachers and some bad teachers in the middle school. For starters, their science program has lacked a good teacher since this school has started. Almost every year a new science teacher has been hired and they are all awful. One year, we had a teacher that was just terrible and was rumored to be smoking an e-cig in class and I would not doubt it. Now, I wont point any names but the middle school 9th grade English teacher is a little over the top. Her assignments are way to hard and time consuming for middle school and are just unfair. Everything is just guessing because the lessons were not organized and poorly explained. I can see the dedication to the job but in the wrong way. For the administration, they have some good ones and some bad ones. I like what they have done the past couple of years with the admin and I like how their trying to change it up a little. One thing that I didn't like and plenty of moms and teachers did not like is the overall administrator she has let no fun into this school. Everyone knows middle school kids are pretty hard to teach, and the teachers take that to the extreme. There is a lot of fighting in this school and it's mainly because of all the useless rules that make it so. I think if this school adopts rules from other ones that are actually reasonable then everyone would be better off. Overall, this school was pretty terrible for most of the time. Sure, there was some fun parts that lasted until the staff killed the fun. I hope this school can change for the better.

My kids have attended the elementary school for the past 6 years. I have been thrilled with the teachers and the staff at the school. Some of my kids do really well at school and others struggle. There has been a very individualized approach to each child to make sure they are challenged at their level. I look forward to my oldest starting middle school next year. The teachers are great. As for the uniforms, I love it as a mom. I let the kids have fun choosing a backpack and shoes to show their personality. Having uniforms simplify life so much!

Hawthorn Academy provides a challenging curriculum for my son. They provide an international perspective and global thinking that you don t find in other schools. I like that it has a small number of students per grade so that teachers and staff get to know each child in the grade. I feel like my concerns are heard and valued as a parent.

I think this school is great! It provides a great learning environment for kids of all ages. I like how the class sizes are smaller so you can have one on one help with the teachers if you need it. Most of the teachers are fantastic, however you always have those few teachers who are not so bright.
I also like how this school has extra curricular activities and clubs after school. It gives you a good opportunity to do things besides school.

Overall, I would recommend going to Hawthorn Academy!
