Tour guide VERY informative. We all learned a lot.
So glad we did this before we left Memphis. Our guide was excellent and made the slaves stories come alive. I had the pleasure of touring with a group of college kids, their reactions, expressions and comments were priceless to watch. I forget the history of slavery is not something they know much of unfortunately. I truly recommend this for everyone so the horrors of slavery are never forgotten.
Very moving experience. The guides are excellent and passionate about sharing their knowledge. The stories you will hear are both heartbreaking and courageous. You may get shivers down your spine, you may even shed a few tears; but you will leave empowered by the determination of the human spirit.
Most inspiring as well as one of the more enlightening places I have ever visited and or has ever experienced... This place spoke to me as we toured from room to room as the tour guides expressed so much information regarding the historical events that took place during the exhibits... A must see, very inspiring indeed.
Very informative, fully narrated tour by staff! No photos allowed inside, but I feel like with all the facts and the experiences inside you don't need it. Glad I was able to visit!
Educational and enlightening. Definitely worth many visits.
Very Emotional...
Great tour guide and informative...
A very good place. Learned a lot about black history and it's contributors.
Another Memphis must see! a great for historical discovery. Great tour guide and very informative visit. I must have learned more visiting this place then in school. It's a shame we are not thought those things in school in Africa, at least in Senegal where I live.
Mrs. Elaine Turner and the staff did a wonderful job, of telling the history of slavery. I was very intrigued after I left and wanted to learn more about the Underground Railroad.
Extremely informative! Guide was very knowledgeable. It's a shame the way black folk were treated during slavery time. This tour was a very humbling experience and ALL people of every color should make time for a Slave Haven visit.
It's a great place to learn about the history of slaves. The best part is, it's in a real slave house!
Unfortunately we couldn't visit bc they don't accept credit cards. The Greeter told us we could leave and go get cash from an ATM. When asked if the credit card machine would be operational later in the day, she said 'Oh no, it's been broken for quite a while'. So apparently they have no plans to fix it, no attempt to run cc's on a website, no plans to get a square or anything. Way to turn away 2 customers on a dead Tuesday morning. I'm not jumping through hoops to pay $12 at this tiny place.
Very Informative....So called Black and Hispanics go check out your history!!
It was awesome. The ladies did an fantastic job on engaging the group. I even purchased a t shirt. I will most definitely be back with family and friends
Hidden gem - interpreters were phenomenal. Happy to pay to keep this place available.
This place gave me an amazing fresh perspective on the sad travesty that slavery was. Obviously you learn about the brave people that took part in the underground railroad. The tour is a revolving tour so you can always jump right in. It's definitely worth a stop.
Staff is rude and it is sad that the owner is just as rude an unprofessional. We will never be back to support this business and will not recommend it to anyone.
Definitely an educational tour to follow up on if you are in Memphis visiting the MLK Museum . Only 7 mins north from the Lorraine Motel site two blocks west on Second Ave. Spend an hour or so of your time and let 4 tour guides educate you and enjoy the tour.
Everyone should see this and learn a piece of American history period.
Extremely informative tour of the worst part of America s past and the struggle of Africans and African Americas to escape to freedom. Don t miss!
Small, but mighty. Hard truth spoken hear, not recommended for younger kids.
Great history and enlightening. Quick tour of abolitionist home and how he helped slaves in their journey to freedom.
Wow! I learned so much from our guide. This is a hidden gem and a must see if you want to know our American history for real. Black history (some of our forgotten truths) reminds me of our significance to the American establishment. People of color are entertwined into every aspect of building this country. Knowing history reminds us of this fact. I won't share any spoliers, just go.
If you want to know the history of the underground railroad and how it was used to free slaves, you need to visit this museum. I was enlightened, educated and inspired by what I learned. The tour guides are amazing and excellent story tellers who captivate your attention with their knowledge and make the experience valuable.
Interesting artifacts. Docent was excellent. No photos allowed.
Great place to gain knowledge of the history of slavery and the underground railroad.
Brilliant, knowledgeable and passionate guide made this a brilliant stop on our journey.
Highly recommend.
Elaine, the docent, was so kind. She covered so much history, but also included and engaged the elementary age children on the tour. She was very gracious about helping me get to the estate and to get back to the correct place to rejoin my friends - who, by the way, chose to miss the most interesting part of Memphis history. Elaine's son was the guide at the W.C. Handy home and was also very accommodating. As a visitor from Handy's hometown of Florence, AL, I had many questions and wanted to see every artifact. I highly recommend both sites.
Don't listen to the ignoramuses that are rating this place low. If you're in the area, you should absolutely go see this. The guides are knowledgeable and the experience is one that I won't forget.
I didn't have the best experience with the woman at the counter and didn't get to go through a tour that day but I'm sure it was lovely. I did take photos of the artifacts outside.
I have been here all of my life and did not know about this place. I am so glad I had an opportunity to visit.
Very educational. Highly recommend it if you are in the area. No pictures allowed though.
The curators were incredibly informative - what a great piece of history. We had a wonderful time!
I encourage all people to visit it. Very educational.
This was an awesome Experience to know that there were actual white citizens in the south that helped free slaves. Should be part of the public school system curriculum.
This place is AWESOME! The whole family will learn of the struggles of the Underground Railroad. AWESOME!
Do get a glimpse of american history starting with slavery and its resistance.
Very interesting n educational. Very sad how one human can treat another human.....
Everyone should see n know!!!
It's a small museum but the guides are knowledgeable and passionate.
Eye opening tour! The guides were quality! Loved it
From the outside the home where this Museum doesn't look like much especially since you enter from the rear. Once inside a sober experience will come upon you. My eyes were opened to the inhumanity experienced by those brought here from Africa as slaves.
I've visited Memphis several times but didn't know about this little gem! This tour was very informative. I've visited several other plantations in different cities, this one is definately one of my favorites.
I took a group of high schools students. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and engaging! We learned so much...
Fascinating museum and really interesting insight into the Underground Railroad. Guides were superb. Worth the trip out from the city centre.
All I can say is WOW! If you ever want to learn something about American history, this is where you need to go! Very powerful artifacts, and the speakers take pride in teaching you. I cannot recommend this place enough!
Amazing look at a stop on the Underground Railroad. The guides were lively and informative. Highly recommended.
Highly recommend! Excellent information. Great tour guides. Also very knowledgeable.
This is one little place filled with GREAT HISTORY! It's truly amazing how the staff presents to you the AWESOME LOVE GIVEN TOWARDS ALL WHO PASSED THROUGH THIS HOUSE!
Very interesting place to see what Memphis was like during the final years if slavery. Would have liked to walk around at my own pace but you feel like you have to hang with the 'tour'
Definitely great place to go to get a good look inside a piece of history. Great knowledgeable guides and not touristy so you get a good small tour.
What an excellent experience the tour guide was amazing
You will certainly learn things you never knew! One of the tour guides seems very bent on making out white people to be evil. I get it but wasn't the owner of the house a German abolutionist, white? Didn't he save countless lives? Tone it down please, we all know slavery is hideous and an abomination to mankind, and yes racisim exsists still but being mad about it only freaks people out and then they stop listening.
Glad me and my wife got a Chance to experience a part of history .
Wonderful history. The house and the story of the owner was terrific.
A hidden gem of history. Must see if visiting Memphis. Alot of history in one stop.
They should stick to facts and less opinion and emotion. Some neat exhibits, felt rushed thru.
So informational and provides interactive learning about African American history in the US.
The Madame that's running the slave plantation needs basic customer service. She was very disappointing , disrespectful and unprofessional. I would have love to speak to her manager. She failed miserably.
