We orderd separately but as a group. We got there half hour after we orderd and was not welcomed or even acknowledged for another 20 minutes only to have the waiter stop treating us and help guest that came in after us. The entire time we could see our food. It was 45 minuts old by the time we got it. Waiter was trina. Worse waitress i have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. We came back to get a refund and we were blamed for it being so late even tho we were told it would be done in 25 and we came in 30 minutes after.
Service and Food was awesome! Took the kids for the grill and they loved the entertainment. Thank you!
I came into this Sushi joint regularly, about 1-2 times a week, sometimes with friends and sometimes alone, and the reason we came here?? Your chef - he was fantastic. We gladly paid full price for special rolls because that chef was worth it. Found out this week that you no longer employ him (with quite unjust circumstances as I understand) and today was my absolute last day dining at this restaurant. Your regular menu rolls on half price are very unsatisfactory, and the "new" full price menu for Friday and Saturday is also nothing special...It is very Americanized, bland, fried, boring sushi and the hibachi is nothing like Bennihana or Tempanyaki. the atmosphere here is not great, the service is not great...but the sushi was why we came back, it was what set you apart. Now...I will never return to this restaurant, and I will definitely not recommend this restaurant.
A co-worker said her daughter loved this place so I decided to give it a shot. I ordered Edamame, and a Vegas roll which was on the 50% menu.
The edamames color was a very light green, it was soggy, and there was not a speck of salt on it anywhere. The Vegas roll was also disappointing, I could see how they can sell it at half price since it is half the size any other Vegas roll I've ever had.
The roll was also soggy and the advocado they put in it had a brownish color to it. The atmosphere and customer service were good but the food has to also be good in order to keep me coming back. Sorry, I will be taking my tastebuds elsewhere from now on. :-(
I m from Draper and drove to this Layton location because a friend recently went here for date and recommended it to me. The atmosphere reminded me of the Bonsai restaurant in Sandy where everyone sits around a big grill and watches the chef make your order in front of you. I've been to a lot of Sushi restaurants in Utah; including Tsunami, Red Ginger, Ichiban, and Takashi to name a few. I went with a date on a Friday during lunch hours and sat at the bar area. I can t give my opinion on how the grill staff was since we only dealt with the sushi chef behind the bar. The service speed could have been faster, but it s what is as expected of when you order specialty rolls. The sushi is what made this experience what it was. It was delectable; you could tell that the fish was fresh and that the rice wasn't fighting for control of your taste buds. Overall I would definitely recommend this to a friend or family. Next time I ll be sure to go during the 50% off so I can try more rolls.
This place is pretty good. The hours are for lunch-dinner which makes sense. The food was good, when I asked for more eel sauce for a sushi roll that was a little dry they were very accommodating. The spicy rolls I got weren't really all the spicy in my opinion though.
The best sushi in town. I've ate at all the local places multiple times. They were all good with good service. Happy Hashi is a step above. Great service, great atmosphere, great selection, great price! Did I mention they have tepenyaki?
My hubby and I placed an order to go, the promotion was buy 1 get 1 free. So we ordered 2 California rolls (about $7 each) and 2 Las Vegas rolls (about bout $14 each). Basic logic is that I would pay for a California roll and get one for More
Tried their miso and fried rice the miso soup was great but was disappointed with the rest of my order. I am anaphylactic to milk and any byproducts and let them know to NOT put any butter in it and they still did so now having an allergic reaction. I am disappointed and if you have to have accommodations for health issues do not go there
The place has improved a lots since the last time I visited. It just get better and better
Good sushi for a good price. It's usually not busy, but the food is good.
Good food, but super slow service. I really enjoyed the sushi but for a naked roll had to wait over 20 min during lunchtime. Also, in the hour I was there I got two refills on my drink and my wife, who had water, had to wait 20 min for a refill after finishing her water. The lunch all you can eat at 12$ has a small variety with better rolls on the 15$ all you can eat menu. I did enjoy their fried rice, Vegas and country rolls.
Also this is one of the places with the odd habit of having all their rolls 50% off... why not just post their actual price on the menu?
Cornilio the sushi chef he is the best always making us good rolls
I went there with my family on New Year's Eve, we were trying to find new spots to eat in Layton. It was a fun place and the atmosphere was pretty sweet but it wasn't the best service ever. First, they put us on a grill that had been having problems that whole day and we ended up switching grills after they tried to cook our food. I don't know if I would go back there, but the food was alright.
Love the food and the service! Go here on a weekly!
If I could it would them a negative 5 stars. The sushi was disgusting if you go there the only sushi I suggest getting is the California roll because it's imitation crab salad. It's already made me and my fiance sick and it's only been about 10 minutes since we left! The fish tasted spoiled!
Cornelio is awesome. My first visit was a very busy Valentines day. we decided to have a couple sushi rolls as an appetizer while waiting on out table at Red Lobster. We sat at the bar with Cornelio, who took great care of us.
I have been in 6 times all the way from Tremonton. The owner comes to chat me up now every time since my third visit.
My third visit, they were closed because of computer issues and would not be able to process my payment in the normal fashion. I told them I came all that way just for their food. so the owner took care of my family, and we were able to run my card in the old school fashion with the carbon imprint of the card.
My last visit I had family in town for the Thanksgiving holiday. I called before heading down to find out if Cornelio was working. The owner called him in 1.5 hours early just to cook for us.
Love the half price sushi Sunday thru Thursday. Great service!
My all time favorite sashimi stop. Delicious sushi and soup. Would totally recommend this to everyone.
Can do the hibachi or a regular table, food was good, service was quick.
Our family of 6 all love Sushi and Japanese food to the point that we typically eat Japanese/Sushi at least once a week and very often eat 2-3 times a week. Wife and I were near the mall running errands today and decided to try this place out. Typically we go to Tony's when in Layton, but these guys were close and we wanted to check them out. The decor and atmosphere are very nice, but that is all I can report on the positive side. Note, we were the only customers there other than a group of 4 guys a few tables over. The sign on the outside of the building advertised a lunch menu "starting at $5.99 with soup or salad" and the lunch menu given to us at the table said the same. My wife ordered one of their lunch sushi specials and I ordered the teryaki bento box lunch special. After taking the order, the waitress returned a few minutes later to inform us that the "special" rolls my wife had ordered for her "special roll" lunch were not included even though the were listed in the "special" roll section of the menu. After taking a new order from my wife, she indicated that her miso soup would be an additional .50 cents...?? When she brought my wife her soup, I asked if I could get my soup too.....at which point she told me that my order did not come with soup. I reminded her that I ordered one of their "lunch specials" and pointed out to her that the menu indicated soup or salad was included. This is when she proceeded in her words to "explain to me" that because my bento box included salad, that soup was not included. She was not interested in what the sign outside or what the menu actually said. When I asked her to then please have the bento box include the soup instead of the salad....remember the menu says soup OR salad....she said that substitutions were not allowed for the lunch specials. Wow....:(
When the food did arrive, the edamame was dry, the rice in the sushi rolls and nigiri was very mushy to the point it was hard to distinguish any rice grains, and the odor of fresh cigarette smoke from the waitress overpowered our senses for minutes after she left the table.
We will definitely not be going back to this location. We will just make the drive to the other ones in the area...
Over 25 minutes to get my food which was only 2 sushi rolls terrible wont be coming back here
Great food, friendly service and wonderful atmosphere. And the chef's are entertaining.
Great food. Very nice and attentive servers. A clean and friendly atmosphere. The only downside I can think of is occasionally the service is really slow. Other than that it's great.
This place went downhill. We use to come here all the time, as we Love sushi , but now they do not even have the same sushi chef anymore. They changed the menus, took away half the rolls that they use to have, and no longer do 50% off. Service is awful and very slow, especially when you just ordered 2 sushi rolls. Very disappointing, old management/owners did a way better job with this place. No more punch cards, no 50% off, no quality sushi anymore, & awful service.
EDIT 09/2016: I have upped my rating some, as Trina no longer works there. I still think management allowed her to be an issue for far too long however, and I think the buy one get one pricing is a bit of a scam. The computer rings this up in the most shady way every time. The waiting staff will usually correct this, but only if they're asked about it (understandably), and I'm sure they wouldn't feel comfortable with it if the management was over their shoulder. Great food, decent pricing, but the owners really need to stop trying to nickel and dime. Bring back the old pricing style, and where the hell are my delicious mussel shooters?? Haha.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
As the others have said, this used to be one of the better places in the area. Things have gone downhill rapidly, however.
The new management changed the menus, which is fine, they're still good menus. And they changed the 50% off to BOGO, which is again, fine. The main issue here is the new staff. The waitress that seems to be a common theme throughout the reviews (Trina) is simply horrible at her job. I've never had a waitress be as condescending as she is every time we go there. This isn't a simple fluke or bad day, Trina is simply snarky and rude all of the time.
We regularly frequent this place with my family, 4-8 people, and do very well at accommodating ourselves and expecting no extra service for the two people in our party that require wheelchairs due to Cerebral Palsy and bilateral leg surgery. I have always made sure to tip well.
Trina clearly remembers our party each time as simple questions like "What was the roll with X and Y on it?" are met with snarky responses such as "Like I told you last time you guys were in here, it's the X roll." Other questions like "can we get a plate of noodles on order right now for my toddler, so that she doesn't get fussy?" are met with "The chef cooks when he gets to the table." (which is just unaccommodating, as once I said we'll just have sushi and sit over there instead, she was able to microwave their pre-made noodles and have them out in less than two minutes.) Perhaps the biggest distasteful comment Trina has made is when one of our party who has Cerebral Palsy asked fir a salad bowl for their soup, as that makes the bowl more stable and manageable for him, Trina replied with "Well I've already poured the soup." and wouldn't accommodate the request without significant additional badgering. Also, Trina doesn't make correct change. She elects to give you back the biggest bills possible in an effort to force your hand into a bigger tip. This is very common in the service industry, but I don't expect it at a place of this alleged caliber. Jokes on you Trina, as we won't be returning, I decided you can enjoy your $2 tip. You sure didn't deserve the $10 you changed me and $2 is what was in my wallet. I hope your tactic worked out for you. There are countless other stories of issues we've had with her as well, as apparently have others on the reviews here.
I'm not typically one to post these reviews, and I am all about second chances, which is why we've had the unfortunate privilege to deal with Trina so many times. However, unfortunately, we will be finding a different place as being served by competent staff in this establishment now is quite difficult. It seems no matter when you go, Trina is your only option. Since I will no longer be returning, I figured I would voice my opinion in finality for anyone curious about this joint.
I go there often, the sushi is always fresh and delicious! I have no issues at all, it was wonderful!!
Whole environment is very pleasant. The staff is wonderful and the food is superb. Would definitely recommend.
