After careful research of various other rehabilita...

After careful research of various other rehabilitation locations, and hearing so many good things about Gurwin Commack, my family had decided that this was where my 78 year old mom s rehabilitation was going to take place.
Well after being admitted on the 18th of Dec everything went downhill from there! My mom remembers seeing a note on her bed the first day about the vaccination being offered. After some family discussion (Only hours mind you not days) we all decided she was going to be on board with taking it.
Needless to say, only maybe a day after admission she personally spoke with several nurses or attendants that came into her room that she was willing to get the vaccination only to be followed up by absolutely no one. CRICKETS, NADA, NO-ONE!
The final outcome... we called and spoke to someone only to find out she missed the vaccination and the next round wouldn t be offered until mid-June. Not Happy!
Next negative was about 1 week after admission, we were notified that 3 or 4 employees of Gurwin were tested positive for Covid19. Well needless to say, we said to ourselves what the hell do we do now?
We were extremely concerned and not sure what our next step was going to be. Until the following day news got much worse when we were told that our Moms roommate was tested positive COVID- 19 .
Well now my mother is Hysterical crying that this is where she was going to be spending her final days on this earth (understandably based on past history and deaths of nursing homes or assisted living facilities) as well as the rest of the family.
Well after a couple hours later or maybe even the next day, the roommate was moved out to a covid floor, my moms room was sanitized and a rapid test was performed with a negative result thank god.
Now the family s mission at this point was get her the hell out of there ASAP but was delayed because we needed a Dr or Social Worker to sign her out because this was all falling on the weekend.
Now comes Monday after a long stressful weekend, another rapid test was performed with a negative result in addition to secondary more thorough test which we are still waiting on as of this posting.
But at this point we have our ducks in a row, had her moved out Monday and back to her condo by ambulette at our own expense how pathetic! (Honestly that should have been on Gurwins Dime)
So now the family is in a wait and see situation hoping that everything remains negative.
I will say, although probably no fault of Gurwin, you would think that anyone that works at facilities such as these, employees whomever they are, would take extra precaution avoiding social gathering, restaurants, family get togethers etc. for the sake of these innocent seniors or patients, or do they think all these deaths from Covid19 are just a Hoax or politically motivated?
So, during all of this frustration of trying to get a straight answer from someone with authority on how this happened, the response relayed to me, was that we can control what goes on within our walls, but we can t control what people do outside.
My answer... how Pathetic that these individuals or practitioners put gatherings or holidays before the safety of their patients or the senior community.
So my response to anyone I speak with about this ordeal.
YOU CANT TRUST ANYONE!!!!

I had a good experience here rehabbing after an accident. Good team from admissions to nursing, aides and therapists. The food was good. Sadly there were no visitors allowed due to covid but I did enjoy the lovely outdoor patio whenever possible. I would recommend this place to others.

My mother was there at the end of her life and the care that I witnessed is unmatched. From the receptionist who quickly took the time to learn my family's names, to the nurses who cared for my mother's needs and allowed her to maintain her dignity, to the Dr's that made sure she was comfortable and made sure that we were in the loop until the very end, I could not have been happier with the treatment my mother received. We should all be treated that way. Thanks to all at Gurwin!

My mom was only in for a few days before she had to go to the hospital. Her experience at Gurwin wasn't the best. She said they weren't very nice to her, which was heartbreaking to me.

This facility is negligent in the care of the residents. They keep the resident rather than send them for medical treatment because it is about the money for Gurwin. The staff is rude and apathetic. Food is horrible. Care is reprehensible.

My Dad is 97 and came down with the flu recently. After two weeks at the VA he was ready to leave the hospital, but not ready to go home. The people at Gurwin took care of him with respect and professionalism. Every aspect of his stay was first class, even the food and he is a finicky eater--at best.

Caregivers, therapists, administrators, social workers... everyone... demonstrated a level of professionalism and caring that was heartwarming.

I cannot express my gratitude too strongly to the professionals at Gurwin.

My grandfather was in Gurwin for well over 2 years. He did exceptionally well. Upon admission, he received intensive rehabilitation from extraordinary physical therapists. Medical care was superb and the nursing care was excellent. My children loved to visit, spending time in front of the huge aquarium and bird aviary. The physical facility is beautiful. Would recommend Gurwin to anyone in need of its services.

While I cannot comment on the nursing staff, I can comment on how rude the financial aid staff is. As my mother is in the hospital waiting for transfer, we sat down with the financial aid rep. We knew what we needed prior and had all the paperwork necessary. The financial aid rep was so nice and helpful telling us how our mother's case is very simply and she sees know red flags. We were also told she qualified for 100 days of full coverage while her paperwork is pending which really put us at ease. She owns nothing, has been retired for years and her only source of income was SS and a benefits check from my deceased father. Pretty black and white. There were a few items we needed but nothing major and had it all in 36 hours.

When we stopped back to drop off the info the financial aid rep was with someone so we left the paperwork with admissions. We saw the rep and wanted to let her know that paperwork was there and she holds her hand up to snap at us how she is with a family and doesn't have time for us. But did have time to scold us on why we would leave it with admissions as they will NEVER get her what she needs. She then had the audacity to say how we should feel lucky we got the paperwork so soon as another family's loved ne might very well pass awry waiting for their paperwork! Is she kidding!!!!! So unprofessional!

Then we need another family member to provide 5 years of her bank statements because she transferred $100 to her in 2014! Then we need property tax receipts from another family member because she had some of my Mom's mail sent there to prove she isn't on the deed. Every time we get them what they need they come back with more stuff they never told us about prior. When we asked why she couldn't be placed right away as she was covered for the 100 days they come back with an excuse on why it is not possible.

So be careful what they tell you. Apparently my Mom who has a total of $1,500 in her bank account and gets no money except for her SS and my Dad's benefits check is apparently some secret real estate mogul with off the books revenue coming in from all areas! Now they tell us her claim is too complicated and we need to hire an attorney (which they are happy to provide us a list of referrals for their kickbacks) to file her paperwork. Beware what they tell you and how simple it all is and god forbid you make the financial aid lady have to actually do some work! If I could give 0 stars I would.

My dad had a horrible experience at this facility. Everyone seemed nice at first but he was admitted on a Thursday or Friday and although we're both vaccinated they wouldn't let me in to see him. Then the weekend hit and my dad complained he had no TV or he needed assistance and no one was around. We tried to call and call and we couldn't reach anyone so I drove there and had his nurse come out and speak to me. He was in a room with no TV for three days and no one cared. He just sat there rotting in his room for days!!! How can that happen to another human being? The social worker got involved on Day 5 or 6 which is when his TV was finally fixed but my sister and I decided to have him transferred to another facility. I thought the request could be expedited considering the circumstances but not the case. My dad had to remain there until the following Monday after making the initial request on Thursday. Imagine having to leave your loved one in a place where they are not being cared for the way they should be? Let me add that the social workers were getting annoyed by the phone calls. Too bad! You're facility is not treating my dad well and I wanted him out of there! If you won't allow visitation then you better make sure your patients are taken care of. This facility FAILED! My dad cried tears of relief when we told him he was finally leaving to be brought to another facility.

Our grandfather spent his last years at Gurwin and we could not have asked for a more wonderful facility. The nursing staff and therapists were amazing caring, compassionate and well trained. The floors and room were bright, clean and beautiful and devoid of any hospital smells. The care was very comprehensive and our loved one was treated with tremendous dignity and respect. Specials thanks to their amazing staff!
