Groundcover News: Creating Opportunity and a Voice for Low-Income People
Groundcover News is a non-profit organization that was founded in April 2010 with the aim of creating opportunity and a voice for low-income people while taking action to end homelessness and poverty. The organization has been working tirelessly to achieve its mission by providing a platform for the homeless community to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives through its monthly publication.
The Groundcover Reading Project is one of the initiatives that Groundcover News has launched to promote literacy among the homeless community. The project involves recording vendors reading articles from the publication, which are then made available online for anyone who wants to listen. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also helps vendors develop their public speaking skills.
Groundcover News has become an important source of information for many people in Michigan who are interested in issues related to homelessness and poverty. The publication covers various topics such as housing, healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and social justice issues affecting low-income communities.
One of the unique aspects of Groundcover News is that it is run by vendors who are either currently or formerly homeless themselves. These individuals have firsthand experience with homelessness and can provide valuable insights into what it's like living on the streets or in shelters. By giving them an opportunity to work as vendors selling copies of the publication on street corners or at local events, Groundcover News provides them with a source of income while also helping them gain valuable job skills.
In addition to publishing its monthly newspaper, Groundcover News also hosts various events throughout the year such as art shows featuring works created by homeless artists or poetry readings where members of the community can share their creative writing pieces.
Groundcover News has received numerous awards over the years for its outstanding work in promoting social justice issues related to homelessness and poverty. In 2015 alone, it was recognized by both Michigan Nonprofit Association's "Excellence Awards" program as well as the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation's "Community Impact Award."
If you're interested in supporting Groundcover News, there are several ways to get involved. You can purchase a copy of the publication from one of its vendors, make a donation online, or volunteer your time to help with events or other initiatives. By supporting this organization, you'll be helping to create opportunities and give a voice to those who are often marginalized in our society.
