Groom Wines: A Family Winery Crafting Exceptional Wines in Barossa Valley
Marschall Groom Cellars is a small family winery located in the renowned Barossa Valley region of South Australia. The winery produces three varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz & Zinfandel - under the label GROOM. With a focus on quality over quantity, Groom Wines has established itself as one of the most respected and sought-after boutique wineries in Australia.
The History of Groom Wines
Groom Wines was founded by David Marschall and his wife Dianne in 1998. David had been working as a winemaker for over 20 years before he decided to start his own venture with his family. The couple purchased an old vineyard in the Barossa Valley and began producing wines under their own label.
From the beginning, David's philosophy was to produce wines that were true to their varietal character and reflected the unique terroir of Barossa Valley. He believed that great wine could only be made from exceptional grapes grown with care and attention to detail.
Over time, Groom Wines has gained a reputation for crafting some of the finest wines in Australia. Their commitment to quality has earned them numerous awards and accolades from wine critics around the world.
The Vineyards
Groom Wines sources its grapes from several vineyards located throughout Barossa Valley. Each vineyard is carefully selected based on its soil type, microclimate, and grape variety.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from two different vineyards - one located near Lyndoch on red clay soils while another is situated at Williamstown on sandy loam soils which gives it more tropical fruit flavours than grassy notes typical for this variety.
Shiraz grapes are sourced from three different vineyards - one at Ebenezer where vines grow deep into ancient soils, another at Greenock where the vines are planted on shallow soils over limestone and the third one is located at Seppeltsfield which has a unique microclimate that produces grapes with intense flavours.
Zinfandel grapes are sourced from a single vineyard located in the northern part of Barossa Valley. The vines here grow on sandy loam soils and produce grapes with rich, ripe fruit flavours.
The Winemaking Process
At Groom Wines, winemaking is a hands-on process that involves careful attention to detail at every stage. The grapes are handpicked and sorted before being crushed and fermented in small batches.
David Marschall believes in minimal intervention during the winemaking process to allow the natural flavours of the grapes to shine through. He uses traditional techniques such as open fermentation, basket pressing, and barrel aging to create wines that are complex yet balanced.
The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless steel tanks while Shiraz & Zinfandel undergoes fermentation in open fermenters with regular punch-downs for maximum extraction of colour and flavour. After fermentation, all wines spend time aging in oak barrels - French oak for Sauvignon Blanc & Shiraz while American oak for Zinfandel - before being bottled.
The Wines
Groom Wines produces three varietals under its label - Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz & Zinfandel. Each wine reflects the unique terroir of Barossa Valley while showcasing its varietal character.
Sauvignon Blanc: This wine is crisp and refreshing with aromas of citrus fruits like lemon & lime along with tropical fruit notes like passionfruit & guava. On the palate it's zesty with bright acidity balanced by a subtle sweetness making it perfect for pairing with seafood or salads.
Shiraz: This wine is full-bodied yet elegant with aromas of blackberry jam, dark chocolate & spice box followed by hints of vanilla & oak. On the palate, it's rich and velvety with soft tannins and a long finish. It pairs well with grilled meats or hearty stews.
Zinfandel: This wine is bold and juicy with aromas of black cherry, raspberry & black pepper followed by hints of vanilla & spice. On the palate, it's full-bodied with firm tannins and a long finish. It pairs well with spicy foods or barbecued meats.
