Greenpower Education Trust: Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers and Scientists
Greenpower Education Trust is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire young people around the world to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car. The trust was founded in 1999 by Jeremy Way, who wanted to create an exciting way for young people to learn about engineering and sustainability.
The Greenpower Challenge is open to schools, colleges, universities and youth groups across the UK and internationally. It provides students with hands-on experience of designing, building and racing their own electric cars. The challenge involves three different categories: Goblin for primary school children aged 9-11 years old; Formula 24 for secondary school students aged 11-16 years old; Formula 24+ for college/university students aged 16-25 years old.
The Goblin category involves designing a small electric car that can be driven by one child. The Formula 24 category requires teams of up to ten students to design and build an electric car that can be driven by two drivers. Finally, the Formula 24+ category is aimed at college or university teams who are challenged with building a high-performance electric vehicle capable of competing in endurance races.
The Greenpower Challenge not only teaches young people about engineering but also promotes teamwork skills as well as environmental awareness. By using renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines during races instead of traditional fossil fuels like petrol or diesel engines used in conventional cars.
Greenpower Education Trust has been successful in inspiring thousands of young people worldwide since its inception over two decades ago. Many former participants have gone on to pursue careers in STEM fields such as engineering or science thanks to their experiences with Greenpower's programs.
In addition to the Greenpower Challenge program itself, the trust also offers various educational resources including lesson plans on renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, as well as workshops on electric vehicle design and construction.
The trust has also partnered with various organizations such as Siemens, Jaguar Land Rover, and the Royal Navy to provide additional support for its programs. These partnerships have helped to expand the reach of Greenpower's programs and inspire even more young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.
In conclusion, Greenpower Education Trust is an innovative organization that provides young people with a unique opportunity to learn about engineering and sustainability through its Greenpower Challenge program. The trust's commitment to promoting teamwork skills, environmental awareness, and renewable energy sources makes it an excellent resource for schools, colleges, universities and youth groups worldwide. With over two decades of success behind it already, there is no doubt that Greenpower Education Trust will continue inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists for many years to come.
