I asked for recommendations for my partner here, I gave examples of what she's read recently and got a really in depth chat, they gave me excellent options and walked away with 3 books my partner loved! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Quaint and stylish bookshop with pleasant and knowledgable owners/staff. They do a thing where you can buy a gift wrapped book and you only get a little snip of info about it. You find out the rest when you buy and unwrap it. I thought that was interesting and innovative. It puts a different spin on book shopping.
Delightful atmosphere (I love the fireplace!), quite and pleasently silent. I especially appreciate the selection of graphic novels and the children area (they also do workshop s for kids). The adult selection of books is not the widest - few titles and mainly prettier an more expensive editions are preferred, but absolutely worth a visit (or two).
Outstanding customer service - I live in the US and have been unable to get Sweet Bean Paste from every local bookstore here. One email to Golden Hare and a few hours later I get a helpful email from Ellen with news that my book can be ordered and asking for my info. Wonderfully polite service to even an occasional customer like me! Hopefully I can one day visit in person
I am a fan of the new makeover for the Old Brig, satisfying colours, charming staff, fabulous cocktails, though maybe hoisting a person of short stature into those booths a slight challenge
Words can not even describe how much I love this place. It is a beautiful shop filled with beautiful books. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!
My favourite book shop. So friendly and helpful. My kid reads quite far above his age level and they can always recommend books that are going to challenge him but don't verge into being inappropriate.
I'd been heartily looking forward to visiting this bookshop for ages and popped in on Sunday to find something for a friend's birthday. The website says the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect read. With this in mind, I asked for suggestions for something lighthearted or humorous for a present and was stunned when the assistant replied they weren't in the market for the type of book I was after and perhaps to try a larger bookseller with a dedicated humour section. The title I suggested as an example of lighthearted was: Barbara Comyns Our Spoons Came from Woolworths (a Virago Modern Classic). Unfortunately on this occasion, I left what is otherwise a beautiful bookshop, feeling patronised and as if I was in the wrong place asking for some trashy airport novel. I hope the feedback can be useful to improve future customer service and book curation at Golden Hare Books.
It is a litlle local and independent book store. A litlle outside the main " touristic part if the city" but for those who like books and don't mind a litlle walk is very worth a visit. Different from what you usually see as a bookstore. Everyone is very nice also.
One of the best, friendliest and best curated bookstores in the city. It is an immaculate layout and there's always something new to find every time I'm in. Bonus points for their great events that invite in people, often in evenings, for author talks, or themed nights. It's a lovely safe haven in Stockbridge.
This is the kind of bookshop you need to take your time over like a fine malt whisky. There are many beautiful editions of fiction from classics to modern authors. Equally there is a splendid selection of non-fiction, architecture, photography to name but a few. The staff are friendly and helpful too. Once you have bought your choice of reading matter there are many fine Stockbridge coffee shops nearby to enjoy reading it in.
A beautifully designed and curated store--surprises and delights in every corner. If we hadn't been traveling when we visited, I would have spent so much more money. A truly exceptional shop.
It's tough to write a review for a place this good without sounding hysterical! Beautiful books, goregous interior, amazing events, wonderful staff.... I love it, my daughter loves it, my dog loves it.... Surely the best bookstore (independent or otherwise) around.
A lovely independent bookshop with a selection of popular titles and a few more unusual beautifully designed titles which would encourage even the less avid reader to buy. This shop also puts on exhibitions of local artist's work and is a nice to place to discover prints and artist's books.
Had a great conversation about how books are recession proof with the person running the store. This is a lovely environment with a great selection and all products in a great condition. Something for everyone including a brilliant kids section. Love.
I've been looking for a book to read for quite a while and found it really difficult to find any in chain bookstores. David was extremely helpful in finding something that was exactly what I wanted. I'll be coming back again.
A lovely little bookshop. The staff were very helpful. Also, although I'd only been in once (about a month previously) they remembered both me and my order which was nice.
A wonderful gem of an independent book shop! Warning if you go you'll never want to leave and you'll certainly leave with a lighter wallet but a fuller bookbag!
Amazing bookstore with a wide variety of topics. Great place to go for independent publishers and for a cozy atmosphere. Their children s section is a little small but again, often has books that you wouldn t see in a bigger chain bookstore.
Wonderful small bookshop full of titles you can't find in major franchises. You can have a chat with the owner/staff who clearly love their job and know the books they are selling. Very active place in organising small, and interesting, cultural events.
Very interesting first visit, to find a fascinating selection of books, some expert advice on selecting a short story collection as a gift for a discerning reader. Warm fire burning in the shop, especially welcome on a cold winters afternoon. The four of us who visited together all bought a book. It was an unplanned visit, during an afternoon walk.
Such a lovely small book shop! There aren't many books altogether, but there is a good selection anyway, and the people working there were really nice and helpful!
The Golden Hare is a very interesting bookshop. I went in to browse because I was really curious of their sandwich board saying "the place where beautiful books live" and was really happy I did. The books are so unique and beautifully bound. Some really cool illustrated books too. Also, I found myself picking up every other book on the shelves and wanting to read them. They have some fascinating titles, even in the kids section. I asked the lady at the counter where they got all these different books and was told that she hand selects them or gets recommendations from their book group. I'm really excited to see what they'll have the next time I'm in.
A wonderful, well-appointed indie book store with an agreeably eccentric selection and free hot drinks for patrons! Check out the children s selection in the back!
Amazing little independent bookshop that clearly has a lot of love poured into it. Both the exterior and interior are really cute, the staff are helpful, and the selection of books is exciting and, almost universally, very pretty. I'd definitely be a regular if I lived anywhere nearby.
Best bookshop in town! A great selection of carefully chosen titles, art books and publications, friendly, knowledgable staff and they even have a wood burning stove which helps create a lovely, cosy atmosphere on a drizzly afternoon. My partner and I were in today and didn't want to leave! They also sell amazing chocolate made in Edinburgh, great cards and have their own mini book festival coming up, what more could you ask for?!
Absolutely love this place! They have a brilliant selection of fiction books, as well as magazines. They also have hardback copies, which are great for gifts, and often signed editions as well. I'd definitely recommend checking out their events for author signings and readings.
Such a charming bookshop. It's small but the people are lovely and the books they have on display are beautiful. We've also ordered from them when they didn't have a book we needed. Both came between 24-48 hours.
