Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois: Empowering Girls to be Joyful, Healthy and Confident
Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The organization was founded in 1996 by Molly Barker in Charlotte, North Carolina. Since then, it has grown into a national movement with over 200 councils across all 50 states.
The mission of Girls on the Run is to empower young girls by providing them with tools and resources that help them develop self-confidence, positive body image and healthy habits for life. The program is designed for girls aged between 8-13 years old who are at an impressionable age where they can benefit from positive role models and guidance.
The curriculum used by Girls on the Run is based on three core values: understanding oneself, valuing relationships and teamwork. These values are taught through interactive lessons that incorporate physical activity such as running games or exercises. The program culminates in a celebratory 5K run where participants can showcase their newfound confidence and skills.
Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois serves communities throughout Boone, Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee Ogle Stephenson & Whiteside counties. They offer programs during both fall & spring seasons at various locations including schools & community centers.
One unique aspect of Girls on the Run is its commitment to inclusivity. The organization strives to make its programs accessible to all girls regardless of their financial situation or background. Scholarships are available for families who cannot afford program fees.
In addition to empowering young girls directly through its programs, Girls on the Run also seeks to create systemic change by advocating for policies that support physical activity opportunities for youth across America.
Overall,GOTR NWIL's impact extends beyond just individual participants; it helps build stronger communities by fostering leadership skills among young women who will go on to become positive role models for others. By empowering girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois is making a significant contribution towards creating a brighter future for all.
