I've been a karate student at GDSK for about 13 years. This is a truly amazing place that keeps me focused on my goals and disciplined in my actions. Also a great way to keep in shape. I highly recommend.
We just had my son's 5th birthday party at the karate school with more than 25 kids. Sempai John and his assistants were amazing. The kids had a blast!! From learning how to punch and kick to coloring and breaking boards they were engaged from start to finish! On Monday it was the talk of the classroom. Thanks again for making my son's party a memorable one.
I ve been a student at Gene Dunn s Shotokan Karate for over 20 years. No one stays in a place that long unless it s a great atmosphere. There s no other teaching like it. Don t ever think that age or a disability matters. Thank you Shihan and staff.

This is an amazing school with wonderful, caring instructors. They do some really great things to keep the kids focused, including special spots to stand on, repetition of rules and instructions, and focusing exercises that all the children love. Every day they excitedly ask me if they have karate and on the days I say yes, they cheer. Plus they are learning real skills here. I would definitely highly recommend this dojo to anyone looking.

This place is everything a martial arts school should be. The instructors are very knowledgeable and dedicated to the different disciplines of Karate, Kickboxing, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu. The philosophy of the school is one of positive self growth with the purpose to create a stronger and peaceful community. Its the truest and purest self defense martial arts experience one can get in my opinion. I ve witnessed many people s lives change in a great way which comes from more than just learning how to kick, punch, etc...

I attended this school for almost 3 years for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Training under Gene Dunn has had a tremendous impact on my life. I have grown as a man, I've become more accountable, more giving, and more aware of the consequences of my words and actions. The most beautiful aspect of training at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that this mental training is so subtle, that you don't even know it's changing you for the better. You don't realize how you've grown until you find yourself in a different environment, surrounded by more challenging circumstances. There was a time when I was frantically huffing and puffing, there was also a time when I would use aggression and speed to attempt anything on the mat, and there was a time when my face would turn red and my teeth would grind in futile exertion. I don't do that anymore, because I've realized it is not the way and creates nothing but distance between myself and my rolling partner.
There is not enough words to describe our outstanding experience! My recommendation to any parent is to simply go and schedule your initial complementary lesson and you and your child will absolutely fall in love. Brenda took her time explain and talking to my son and he had a blast practicing with her.
She has spoken to him regarding healthy eating habits and how good behavior is extremely important (she has told him everything that we teach him on daily basis :) ) After the lessons there is fresh apples in the bowl waiting for kids. Thank you Brenda and Thank you Genes Shotokan Karate!

Deciding to to join karate was probably one of the best decisions I ever made , I started way back in 1999 and have only grown to love the martial arts and the school more with each passing year ,I made great friends and have a true sense of community Dunn's Dojo is a great place to train .

Shihan Gene Dunn is the real deal. A great instructor. A lifelong martial artist who has never rested on his laurels. He continues to study and practice multiple disciplines to bring a unique cooperative atmosphere in his school. Regardless where you live, geographically, this is a great place to train.
We absolutely love this karate place! The staff and the instructors are always so kind, understanding, and patient. They truly love working with the kids and it shows! My daughter really looks forward to coming here! We also had her birthday party in the dojo and the kids had the absolute best time!
I have been training here since I was three years old. Now I am a third-degree black belt, and I am so happy to have been raised in such a loving, caring,community. I have been presented with proper morals, and confidence skills as a child that have helped me succeed in school. In addition, it has helped me maintain a very healthy being. What an excellent program for yourself or child. The martial arts has done so much for myself and my family. I have been doing karate here for 17 years and I'm still training on the mat. The instructors are here to work with each and every student and are fantastic. Classes run from the ages of 3 and up. They even offer a Brazilian jiu-jitsu program which is phenomenal. It's primarily based on feet to floor self defense. The school is affiliated with sister schools such as Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Brooklyn Vindhya Yoga which are located within a few miles each other. Thanks to Gene Dunn's Karate I am happily to be apart of a great and safe environment.
I know Gene Dunn (Shihan) for at least 25 years. I first started with him in the early 90s. After a few years we moved upstate for 18 years. When I walked it his dojo after all those years he welcomed me with open arms.
I proud to say my 10 year old daughter Brianna takes class we me 2-3 times a week. It has brought us closer together as father & daughter. We love going and we are both looking forward to the day that we reach our black belt. As for Shihan he is one of the most pleasant and yet serious instructors I ever know, with a great sense of humor. I would highly recommend his school for anybody who wants to achieve greatness in their life
My experience at this dojo is one of the most unique and special that I ever had. My entire family (myself, my husband and my two kids) all train here. I can't ask for a safer and better structured environment for me and my family. Unlike many other martial art schools, Gene Dunn Shotokan Karate teach karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as an art, not a sport. Every student matters and the learning experience is incredible.
I used to go to this school myself as a kid and now I take my son. They are so amazing with the kids. Their adult classes are great too. After the first lesson my son come home asking if he could help me and volunteering to help with chores. We ve been coming for a year now and he s blossomed I m so many ways. He s learned to socialize, be a good member of society, improved his physical abilities, and more important than all of that, we are part of a family here. Everyone here is so kind and patient. I couldn t imagine us going anywhere else. I highly recommend them.
