I only resorted to using FamilyTutor when a search for a suitable Chinese tutor for my S1 child through the traditional tuition centres proved unsuccessful. I then decided to google and found services such as FamilyTutor and decided to give it a go. To be honest, I was initially a little sceptical. I guess part of it was that one would not get to meet the tutor in person. However, once connection was made via WhatsApp with FamilyTutor's agents, that doubt was put to rest. The agents were highly professional and patient and immediately assured me that there is no obligation on our part throughout the selection process and no fee was due until we were satisfied with whoever we choose, even if things do not work out after the first session. The experience was absolutely fuss-free. During the selection process, we were provided with many choices along with their credentials to pick from. There was no pressure nor any urgency to commit. We eventually made our pick and, whether through pure luck or good fortune, the tutor turned out to be a most patient and warm person. But what immediately won me over was his conviction that simply acquiring techniques to score well in exams is the end to any hope of providing the student a chance to appreciate the richness and wealth of Chinese culture. Mr Ray Lin, who hails from China but has happily settled in Singapore for years now, believes that once that is achieved, everything else will fall neatly into place and success at school will inevitably follow. Singaporean parents and school children seek tutors to help them score well in exams. Undoubtedly, many do but most end up still hating the language and their command of it, even in adulthood, is often rudimentary at best. Mr Lin's commitment to education is in the right place. His pride in his mother tongue and culture reassures me that my child has not only a good tutor but a mentor that has her learning journey in mind rather than simply handing her the tools to reach her destination, in other words, to do well in exams. For this, we do have FamilyTutor to thank for.
