Exeter Chiefs - Home of Exeter's Premier Rugby Club at Sandy Park
Exeter Chiefs is a professional rugby union club based in Exeter, Devon, England. The club was founded in 1871 and has since become one of the most successful rugby clubs in the country. The team plays its home games at Sandy Park, which has a capacity of over 12,000 spectators.
The Exeter Chiefs have a rich history and have won numerous titles over the years. They were promoted to the Premiership for the first time in 2010 and have since gone on to win two Premiership titles (in 2017 and 2020) as well as reaching four consecutive Premiership finals between 2016-2019.
The club has also enjoyed success in European competitions, winning their first major trophy by lifting the European Champions Cup in October 2020 after defeating Racing Metro Paris. This was an incredible achievement for a team that had only been playing top-flight rugby for ten years.
Exeter Chiefs are known for their attacking style of play which is based on quick ball movement and offloading. They are also renowned for their strong defence which is built around solid tackling and aggressive line speed.
The team is led by Director of Rugby Rob Baxter who has been with the club since his playing days back in the early nineties. He took over as head coach in 2009 and has overseen an incredible period of success for the club.
Off-field, Exeter Chiefs are committed to making a positive impact on their local community through various initiatives such as supporting local charities, schools and community groups. They also run an academy system that aims to develop young players from across Devon into future stars of English rugby.
In recent years there has been some controversy surrounding the use of Native American imagery by Exeter Chiefs including their logo featuring a headdress-wearing Native American chief nicknamed "Big Chief". In June 2020 it was announced that the club would be retiring the use of this imagery and nickname following a review of their branding.
Overall, Exeter Chiefs are a hugely successful rugby club with a proud history and an exciting future ahead. With their attacking style of play, strong defence and commitment to making a positive impact on their local community, they are sure to continue to be one of the most popular teams in English rugby for many years to come.
