Exceptional Children's Assistance Center: Empowering Families and Advocating for Special Needs Children
Exceptional Children's Assistance Center (ECAC) is a non-profit organization that provides support, resources, and training to families caring for children with special needs. ECAC was founded in 1983 by parents who were struggling to navigate the complex special education system. Today, ECAC serves families across North Carolina and beyond.
At ECAC, we understand that raising a child with special needs can be challenging. We believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed in life, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. Our mission is to empower families by providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to advocate for their children.
Our Services
ECAC offers a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of each family we serve. Our services include:
Information and Referral: We provide information on various topics related to special education such as Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Section 504 plans, disability rights laws, assistive technology, transition planning, etc.
Parent Training: We offer workshops and webinars on various topics such as advocacy skills development; understanding your child's disability; navigating the IEP process; behavior management strategies; etc.
Individualized Support: Our staff provides one-on-one support via phone or email on specific issues related to your child's education or disability-related concerns.
Resource Library: We have an extensive collection of books, videos/DVDs/CDs available for loan at no cost from our library located at our office in Raleigh NC.
Self-Advocacy Training: For young adults with disabilities aged 14-26 years old who want to learn how they can become self-advocates & leaders in their communities through our Youth Leadership Forum program held annually during summer months across North Carolina
Professional Development Training: For educators & professionals working with students who have disabilities through our online training courses offered throughout the year covering topics like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD/ADD & Learning Disabilities (LD).
All these services are provided free-of-cost thanks largely due generous donations from individuals & organizations committed towards supporting families raising children with special needs.
Our Impact
Over the years since its inception over three decades ago now - Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center has helped thousands of families navigate the complex world of special education successfully. Through our programs & services mentioned above we have empowered parents/caregivers by providing them access not only information but also practical tools needed so they can advocate effectively for their children’s educational rights while also helping young adults become self-advocates themselves thereby leading more fulfilling lives as active members within society at large!
We are proud of what we’ve accomplished so far but know there is still much work left undone especially given how many more people could benefit from what we offer here at Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center!
