I rented a car for my holidays in Malta from this company at the airport. It was raining and nobody was at the car parking to check the car with me before I take it. I paid 160 for four days and they blocked 500 as an insurance. The employee that we made the deal with ensured me that the money will be returned immediately after we return the car. It has been Five days now that we have returned the car and they didn t unblock the money. I called the company and ask them about it and they told me that it usually takes three weeks to take the blocked money back.
1) It is unacceptable and not professional at all to tell lies to manage to rent a car. It s a big difference between three days and three weeks.
2) Bad insurance services. I was disposed to pay a full insurance package and they still blocked me 500 from my card.
3) Nobody was there to check the car with me as I was told when I left the airport building.
This is the last time I cooperate with this company.

Not recommended at all. No information provided on check-in. The interiors were filthy (very bad especially in COVID times). Car was not inspected on checkout.
You should watch out with Europcar (unfortunately there isn't one car rental agency at Malta airport that has good ratings, so you're kind of in a dilemma here). First major concern, fuel policy "Full to empty mandatory full tank purchase". As per their rental terms (see attached), you are obliged to pay for a full tank upon pickup at their rates (which aren't displayed anywhere). You can return the car empty, so you basically use up overpriced fuel, if you manage (Malta is small so it's hard to do that). As per their terms, any unused fuel is non refundable and shall become the property of Europcar. Legalised theft??? You make up your own decision. Anyway, my three day rental cost increased by 200% because of this policy! Now to the car itself. Again per their policy, they make you do all the work of checking their car. You need to view the car, and inform them within one hour of pickup of any damages not indicated in the rental agreement signed at the airport counter desk (see screenshot of terms). Never that that before. A professional agency that checks the cars themselves doesn't need to input such a clause into any agreement, unless they have some hidden agenda. My car was dirty (see picture of driver seat area) and the tires weren't inflated properly resulting in the warning signal. This is the first time I have sat into a rental car that had such a huge safety risk right at the start. The car itself wasn't that bad, but for that I need to thank Ford and not Europcar Malta. Europcar should take away the franchise from this Alpine Rent a Car Ltd, they don't do the brand name any good.
Update: I sent a complaint letter, no reply (no surprise). Will take this up now with consumer complaints in Malta. I also rented a car at Hertz in Athens now, and I attached pictures how their cars are prepared. What a difference!
ZERO stars!! Where do I begin with this place! On their website it states open 24 hours, upon arrival the very rude and condescending woman at the desk tried to charge me 30 for an out of hours pick up fee, I asked her why as the booking said open 24 hours, she told me it was in my contract, I looked and couldn t see anything that said this, she pointed out one paragraph that said if you change your booking there will be a 30 fee, I said this does not say an out of hours fee, she refused to listen, it was either pay it or lose my entire booking, I couldn t care about the 30, it was the fact that they were knowingly ripping me off that got to me. Following this, I had to take the car out of the parking area without someone there from europcar to look over the car before I left, she said if there s any problems with the car just take photos and show us when you arrive back, it was pitch black at the time, but I asked her to show me where it said that in their policy, as by this point I had ZERO trust in this company, she said this isn t their official policy, it was near midnight and and I had my 2 year old son with me, so I just accepted it and went on my way. Knowing this company is so dishonest, I knew on my way back to the airport that I was likely to have problems when returning the car, I was was right! Upon arrival the guy inspecting the car said there was a scratch under the front bumper of the car, that wasn t on the sheet, he literally had to lay on the ground under the car to see this! The whole car was covered in scratches! He charged me 300 for this! I was so angry! He said the car needed to go in to get repaired and that s loss of income, but that car had 20 plus scratches on it and had never been in to get repaired. This company make money from scamming holidaymakers, the authorities should put a stop to this! Not a great start to our first trip to Malta. Also they charge you a full tank of full when you pick up the car, I think it was 80, way more than the gas station would, we only used 3/4 of a tank, keep an eye out for this also. I don t know how these people can sleep at night, knowing they re going out of their way to rip people off everyday. I should have looked at the reviews on here before I booked, this days it all, that s a mistake I ll never make again.
The worst experience ever. They were trying to charge us a lot of extra things even if we already paid for full insurance or additional driver through the website. The staff is rude and very unhelpful. Basically they just wanted to steal our money....
Poor poor poor..... Avoid at all costs. Uncompetitive prices, poor customer service, hidden charges, poor information given by representatives.... The list goes on.
I do not recommend Europcar in Malta to anyone. We booked through ryanair and the staff seems really unhappy about it and he was extremely rude and sarcastic from start to end. First, when I showed the email reservation and the booking More
bad bad bad i travel a lot and i like to rent a car during my holiday but this is definitely the worst experience i ever made. not only keep charging for everything, but already by booking the site does not provide enough information but will realise every ridiculous rules by checkin like huge deposit price (1500) or paid full fuel for over 60 and which i barely use even 1/4 of it... and so on So you can imagine the checkin time cost like 30min or more.. I got a fine on a friday night, which is my mistake, since i return on Sunday i plan to pay it when i get home, and already on Monday morning receive their notification that i didnt pay so will cost 20 extra. So my advice avoid this Europcar except you like to have stress from beginning until the end, and have a lot spare money to give them.
My experience with Europcar at Malta airport was a literal scam. Be extremely cautious if you are thinking of opting for any amount of deductible in insurance. When I returned the car, the agent looked for the smallest scratches in an old car which already had tons (~50 or so) of damages. He finally found a tiny scratch *in the bumper* which I couldn't prove had already existed when I picked up the car. He tried to make me pay 280 on the spot for that scratch. (Obviously they didnt fix the scratches from previous hires. So, they clearly just aimed to cash in 280 for a scratch they are not going to fix.) I declined. Then he tried to make me sign a form where I admit being responsible for the scratch. I, of course, declined. Don't rent there!
