Essex National Heritage Commission: Preserving and Connecting the Cultural Heritage of Essex County
The Essex National Heritage Commission is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving and connecting the cultural heritage of Essex County's 34 cities and towns in the North Shore and Merrimack Valley. The commission was established in 1996, with a mission to promote, preserve, and enhance the unique character of this region by fostering partnerships among organizations, businesses, government agencies, and individuals.
The commission has been successful in its mission over the years by working closely with local communities to identify historic sites, natural resources, cultural traditions, and other assets that make this region so special. Through its various programs and initiatives, it has helped to raise awareness about these assets among residents as well as visitors from around the world.
One of the key programs offered by the commission is its grant program. This program provides funding for projects that help to preserve or enhance historic sites or landscapes within Essex County. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis each year based on criteria such as historical significance, community impact, feasibility of implementation, sustainability of results achieved through project completion.
Another important initiative undertaken by the commission is its education program. This program aims to educate people about local history through various means such as workshops for teachers or students; walking tours; lectures; exhibits; publications; etc. The goal is not only to inform people about their past but also inspire them towards future preservation efforts.
In addition to these programs mentioned above which are aimed at preserving heritage sites within Essex county itself ,the commission also works closely with other organizations across Massachusetts state who share similar goals . For example ,it collaborates with Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) which helps it connect with other historical societies across Massachusetts state .
The commission's website serves as an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about this region's rich history . It features information on historic sites , events happening throughout year , educational resources like lesson plans & curriculum guides for teachers/students etc .
