Nice place, great craft brew selection. They serve...
Nice place, great craft brew selection. They serve half pints and charge for full pints. I will not be going there very often at all.
if the prices were more reasonable I would go more.

Disappointing service and staff not particularly helpful. Appears to have a good selection of beer but staff behind the bar weren't at all interested in mine not being up to standard. I was told there was nothing that could be done.
Awful service. Very slow, makes you wonder if your waitress went home for the night
Good price for the wings, which were delicious, and beer. Fries were great as well.
Staff was very nice.
There was an odd smell that put me a little off so that's why 4 rather than 5.
Service was subpar as the waiter walked by our table several times before asking any questions on several occasions. The food was just as bad too. The wings tasted like they were microwaved then lathered in sauce. The loaded tater tots were atrocious. The atmosphere was ok, but the flies that flew around our heads and food the whole time, made for an unpleasant experience overall. Would never return or recommend.
I've always enjoyed the English Cellar. It's even garnered approval from some of my friends from England. The menu is good and the beer selection is great. Prices are reasonable. Enjoy your visit.
Terrible service, rude bartenders and my burger was very undercooked. I would not recommend this place.
Great food, great service and great atmosphere. Right on Thayer St. It's a hop skip and a jump from Brown and RISD so expect a lively college crowd. Lots of drinks to choose from and the food is more than edible. Little tip: in the back corner of the dowstairs bar room there's a horde of bargames for patrons to play with.
Good beer selection but nothing special about the bar
My wife and I ate there for the first time last night (7/11/2014} we had a wounderful experience. The food was top notch the atmosphere was great, and the service was second to none. We already recomended the Alehouse to our friends, and we plan on returning soon.
We have waited for over an hour for food. Management is not at all prepared for a crowd of people. The food is not particularly good either. The beer list is nice but when you want food, this not the place. Not recommended
This place has gone downhill. The last 2 times I've been there, they've been out of a LOT of the beers on the menu, and one person at our table wanted (any) red wine, but they had nothing. Yes, it's an ale house, but not one red wine? The prices are also a bit high, and the pours were at least an ounce short!
I wish I could give it less than 1 star as it deserves it. I have been there a few times and each time the service was awful, the wait staff could care less about you. They act like they are doing you a favor when its their job. Avoid this place
Great food and a cosy atmosphere. Stopped in on a road trip and I would recommend it to anyone checking out Brown or the old city.
The best bar on Thayer. Good beer selection, cool vibe.
Great beer selection, two menus to choose from and friendly staff to boot!! We sat on the patio for dinner then moved into the dark cellar for several pints! We'll definitely be back
The other 33% rating this a ONE have this right:
HORRIBLE/Awful service; alehouse that doesn't ask if want a 2nd beer; unbearable wait for food--which arrived cold (DON'T get the fake Pot Pie); never received napkin/utensils after asked or more pita after offered; a rude greeting hostess... AND I had to go to the bathroom 5x in 18 hours (bad food)! AVOID!!
I came here with my girlfriend about a week ago and left with nothing but complaints. We just went for appetizers and a beer or two, it was about 2 or 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday and it was hardly busy. So our server comes over and takes our drink orders and by this time we are ready to place our food orders as well. He neglects to realize that we have closed our menus and shoved them his way and almost walks away. I ordered, or at least tried to order the Fried Mac & Cheese Balls, to which the waiter quickly spat "oh, we're all out". It was pretty much the only thing I wanted but being an open and easy person I instantly switched to the Spinach & Artichoke Dip with Pita Chips. My friend ordered as well and the server went on his way. Our beers came out a couple minutes later and we waited 10-15 minutes after that for our food. Not really a problem. Until the server comes out with one dish, my friend's, and not mine. He says to me "Uh I guess we're all out of the Spin Dip as well, do you want something else?". Now this would have been fine had he come out, say when we got our beers and told me that they were all out of the dip. But instead he waited until the food was ready so he wouldn't have to make two trips (I'm assuming). So I told him i was rather offended and didn't want anything else besides to speak to a manager. The manager came out a minute or two later to tell me that it was a communication breakdown on their part and so and so chef didn't inform so and so waiter but they actually DO have the Spin Dip available. I was very frustrated at this point but kept my cool and asked if there was anything she could do to remedy the situation. She offered free Spinach Dip or to comp our two beers. I was still hungry so I took the free dip. It wasn't till I was about a third of the way done with my dip & pita chips that I noticed an about 2 inch long curly black hair (dare I say pubic in nature?) nestled amongst my chips. With that I completely lost my appetite and shoved my plate away. Our waiter did not come back over until we were nearly done with our food and seemed to have no care when I showed him the hair I had found as he casually strolled away without a word. So now we're sitting there with nearly empty beers for 5-10 minutes waiting for any sign of our server/the check when he strolls out of the restaurant, around the corner, and down the street completely disregarding us. Only to return say 5 minutes later to ask if we want the check. Our beers are empty, our food is long gone, we've been sitting here agitated (my friend was about to go inside and ask for it) OBVIOUSLY we want the check! Our bill came to around $25 and you can bet we didn't pay a dollar more. There is clearly a breakdown in a lot more than communication at this place, I wouldn't recommend it to even my most loathed ex.
Don't bother. When it first opened, it was a FANTASTIC place to eat and drink. Then, something happened to the quality of the food, the portion size, and beer selection. Yeah, if you're just coming here for a couple drinks, have at it. If you're expecting a decent meal, go elsewhere. They've messed up my orders, forgotten to tell me the beer I ordered isn't available, and will sometimes take over 30 minutes to bring you your burger, even when it's not too busy! Disappointing.
We worked hard to overlook the consistently HORRIBLE SERVICE years ago (used to come weekly for a long time) because we liked the concept but ultimately couldn't stand it. Forget table-side, good luck getting a beer in under 15 min if you're within a foot from a bartender. Just tried again today, years later, and now remember why we left. Amazingly, it's worse than before. Moved from a booth to the pool table, left server $30 for booth tab, just beers, which server took and agreed to keep serving us while we were shooting pool. We later got the full bill again and she claimed she never received the cash we handed over. So many great restaurants in Providence, don't waste your time (or twice your money).
Update: they tried to charge us even more, lost one of our credit cards, and when we explained the situation the manager yelled at us repeatedly. The other patrons who observed were nice though and came over to share their own experiences of terrible service this evening. On the way out, another server mocked us loudly as we walked away.
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME to read the other reviews about the service and suspect financial transactions, our experience tonight is far from unique and we would like to save others the frustration and expense. An unacceptably long wait time is the best service you can hope for here.
Cool little spot with a big beer selection. It does draw a really strange crowd and typically smells kind of funky. You'll have to wait for a beer sometimes, the staff can get a little overwhelmed but they are nice.
Went in last night with a group of 5, had dinner in the upstairs. The food was fantastic, and the service was very quick and attentive.
They have one of the best beer draft selections in Providence. I would highly recommend this place for either drinks or dinner.
Have to agree with many of the others, although I enjoy the vibe of the cellar below more than the upstairs AND the 2nd star is because they carry my absolute favorite: Downeast Cider, I can't give them more than that....I've consistently had slow/bad service and twice they've run out of drinks I've wanted. Shame because it's so close and would be convenient to pop in after work for a quick drink with my coworkers, but I'd rather drive a little further for better service downtown Providence.
nice beer selection and food, but its predecessor (liquid lounge) was much more fun
Cool atmosphere, but the food seemed a little overpriced for what you got. Burger was good, but I wouldn't say it was the best I've ever had. I would go back, but not sure I would go out of my way to get there.
