Electric Girls: Empowering Girls through STEM Education
Electric Girls is a non-profit organization that aims to empower girls by providing them with opportunities to engage in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. The organization was founded in 2015 by Flor Serna and Melissa Thompson, two women who recognized the need for more diversity in the tech industry.
The mission of Electric Girls is to build girls' confidence and capabilities by engaging them through STEM. The organization believes that every girl has the potential to become a leader in technology and innovation if given the right tools and support. Through its programs, Electric Girls seeks to inspire girls to pursue careers in STEM fields and become agents of change in their communities.
One of the core programs offered by Electric Girls is its after-school program. This program provides hands-on learning experiences for girls aged 8-14 years old. Participants learn about coding, robotics, electronics, 3D printing, and other cutting-edge technologies. They also have access to mentors who are professionals working in various STEM fields.
Another program offered by Electric Girls is its summer camp program. This week-long camp provides an immersive experience for girls interested in exploring different aspects of technology. Campers work on projects such as building robots or designing video games while also developing important skills such as teamwork and problem-solving.
In addition to these programs, Electric Girls also offers workshops for schools and community organizations. These workshops provide an introduction to coding or other aspects of technology that can be tailored based on the needs of each group.
Electric Girls has received numerous accolades for its work empowering young women through STEM education. In 2019 alone it was awarded grants from Google.org's Impact Challenge Louisiana as well as from Chevron's Fuel Your School Program.
The impact of Electric Girl's work can be seen not only through the success stories of individual participants but also through broader trends within the tech industry itself. According to recent data from Code.org only 24% percent of computer science graduates are female; however since participating with electric girl’s after school programming over half (52%) have gone on into computer science related majors or careers!
Overall, Electric Girl’s mission is clear: empower young women with knowledge about cutting-edge technologies so they can become leaders within their communities!
