As a preface, my wife and I stayed at Max Brown s for four nights during a six week European holiday.
Max Brown Hotel Museum Square is a it's names suggests located in the Museum sector of Amsterdam. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and have made us feel very welcome. The room consists of a sleeping area with a small adjoining bathroom (which contains the toilet, sink and shower). The bed in our room is queen sized and very very comfortable. There is a bar in the hotel foyer with a seating area where you can enjoy a drink while playing card or board games with friends. Breakfast is served in the basement area and is a help youself arrangement of cold meats, cheeses, various types of breads (which can be toasted), boiled eggs, fruits, yoghurt etc. There is also a self serving coffee machine (makes a good coffee too) as well as tea making facilities. There are several excellent restaurants within walking distance, and some great shopping near by as well. For travelling further afield, there is a tram stop within a two minute walk. There is complmentary Wifi at the hotel, and the connections are very high quality. All in all this is a great little hotel, and I will have no hesitation recomending it too all my friends back in Australia.

Too much noise in the corridor and everywhere, no real food at the restaurant, 4 people just came in the room ! First it was for cleaning and then we don't know. It was 10 am.
Bad organisation. The room wasn't ready when we first came to check in. It was almost 2.30 pm...
The cleaning wasn't properly done. The day before we order at the bar some drinks to our room and the day after the cleaning have left it on the table.

Very friendly managed hotel, nice rooms and good breakfast. Thanks again for the birthday present! Unfortunately the toilet flush was broken and we had to turn it off to sleep. The kettle in the room is a very nice idea, but too calcified to use it.

Leaving specific feedback at the request of the hotel manager. I left a poor review because: (a) I was placed in the 1st room on the 1st floor and the noise from the hotel lobby was far too loud late into the night, (b) the soap dispenser was broken and the soap missing (I didn't care about that too much) but then I was accused of breaking and stealing it during checkout. It wasn't a wonderful experience. I could see how it might be an OK stay for others under better circumstances so I added a star for that.

Perfect hotel to get around the city on foot or by public transport. Obviously also by bike. Clean and stylish rooms. In the room we had ball and basket to play ^ _ ^. Tiny but functional bathroom. Excellent buffet breakfast. Young and friendly staff. Possibility to have a beer at the hotel bar.
Defects:
narrow and steep stairs to go to breakfast and to access the hotel. The bathroom has no bidet. We did not sleep very well because of the narrow beds with uncomfortable cushions and the window frames (from which wind was passing) near the face. Discomfort opening and closing very tall windows need to climb up over the beds to get to the handles.

Greedy owner of The Poet Hotel Amsterdam maid me suffer.
They stopped the elevator so I had to walk like a dog with hands and foots, four floors up,
very afraid of falling because a concussion, damage my balance. I have to walk with a stick, so I should not fall.
Before coming to Amsterdam I had Contact with the Poet Hotel Amsterdam by phone and mejl just to make sure, that everything was OK, I told them if there is no elevator I must have a room on the ground floor..
They did not tell me that the Hotel was under renovaition with all guest in every room anyhow. SCANDAL!!
On sunday 25!10 -14 one of the boys in the reception told me that the elevator would be stoped again at 11 /eleven a Clock in the day. Before that, at 8.30 I left my room 402 and took all my luggage in the elevator down to the reception, and left it in a hole behind the wall, the so called "Luggage room". Anyone could walk in from the street and take whatever they wanted.
The last night I had a room 014 just beside the Luggage, because of the elevator-problem. On Monday when I left they forced me to pay 100 euro extra for that room! SCANDAL!!
They made a very big misstake! I
They gave me back 10 euro for the breakfast I allready paid for once, but not for the room I also had paied for once!!!

But most of all:
The greedy owner of The Poet Hotel should not fool and humiliate the guests!!!

A very nice and small hotel in the middle of an up...

A very nice and small hotel in the middle of an upscale shopping street.

Room relatively small but comfortable. Is equipped with WiFi and flat screen TV, even with German channels. Beds very comfortable, but also very high.
Since some rooms are in the basement, as is the breakfast room, the stairs are a bit small. But I have to say that it just fits the houses in Holland. What was missing was air conditioning, but they also had an emergency solution. There is a small fan in each room.

What was also missing are free parking spaces. But Amsterdam is also a luxury, (little tip: park in the Olympic Stadium. There it costs only 35 per day, while there it costs 54 - per day, mind you. Amsterdam directly costs 76 ... Just by the way The stadium is 2.9km away on foot and is easy to find.) But a car is actually not needed in Amsterdam. It makes a lot more sense to rent a bike from the hotel's own bike rental shop. This means you can get from A to B very quickly, as this is also the number one means of transport in Amsterdam. What is nice is that the hotel is very central and yet in a quiet location. It is located in the museum district. In the parallel street everything is posh, like D&G, Armani, Gucci etc. and it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the center. Another small tip: if you would like to experience the flair of the Dutch and want to end the evening, you should make a short detour to the Irish pub opposite the Vondelpark. Good seating, can have a nice chat and have a drink. With music in the background and the colorful bicycle traffic of the Dutch. We thought it was a nice hotspot to end the evening.

As for the hotel staff, this was very excellent and accommodating. Even if you don't have a good command of English, the staff go out of their way to make sure you are understood. The ambience partly reminded me of a Hemmingway style, which I find very appealing. Price-performance ratio was very good for Amsterdam standards. Breakfast was manageable but 100% everything was available. From muesli, toast, cheese, juice, etc. everything was available. I'm not a fan of excessive choice anyway.

Unfortunately, the bathroom was a small point of criticism. The shower should definitely be overhauled, as stains are slowly forming due to insufficient exhaust air in the bathroom and the toilet was leaking, so that a small puddle of water formed after flushing. Should really be overhauled before it gets bigger.
The service staff bring fresh towels every day and clean properly.

Conclusion: a very nice and inexpensive hotel, with a personal charm and character and very friendly hotel staff. I can only recommend it and would definitely use it again.

Many thanks to the staff of the Max Brown Hotel

Super cute and ideal location. The hallways are small but space is at a huge premium in Amsterdam. The hotel is in a period property lending the hotel endless charm and character. The staff are super friendly too making our whole stay so special.

A very nice hotel, it is noted that the details are very accurate, in the way of professionals that have been there for a long time. The cozy ending room and the breakfast absolutely generous and varied. The beds a narrow hair. Great location. 1 minute from the MOCO Museum and the Van Gogh. Next to the stretch that leads to the Centraal Station

We had a room for 3 and a room for 2, the room for 3 was very small, especially the bathroom, the room for 2 was alright, also a bit small but bigger than the room for 3. The staff were very friendly, when we were there (February 2020) they were renovating the room where they serve breakfast, so the staff would ask us at what hour we wanted breakfast delivered to our rooms. The food was alright and the hotel is close by a lot of things like the Rijksmuseum and the Vondelpark. Very cheap for what you get, I would stay here again.

Great location close to the museums. Very friendly staff and great breakfasts! The room was small but that is very typical for Amsterdam. Stairs are steep however the elevator is pretty fast and easy to use.

Superior room was v nice, comfy bed, quiet. Bit warm with fan only - but we took duvet out and just use the cover - worked a treat. Location good, near museums and park. Close to tram stops. Service was fine. Breakfast continental, good spread and nice. Would return.

Excellent value for money, very well located, tasteful decor and perfect breakfast with the necessary and always replenished. It only does not receive the maximum rating because 5 rooms are located on the ground floor, which is accessible only by an old, steep staircase and requiring extreme care to use.

Overall good experience and pleasant stay at The Max Brown. Only complaints are the tiny rooms which isn't uncommon in European hotels. No good if you're claustrophobic. And while they offer a decent free breakfast to guest, it's reminscent of a Walmart on Black Friday.

Lovely hotel. All the staff were happy and so friendly- felt very comfortable there.
The location was great, really easy to get into the centre, near the bus and tram stop.
Breakfast was good, but liminted and a bit tight on space! But serves its purpose and was tasty.
The room was compact and clean - and they had even put a little bottle of bubbles out for us as we mentioned it was our anniversary (very sweet and they didn t need to!)
Would definitely come back again! Thank you!

The room at Max Brown Museum Square was hilariously small but this was made up for by the fantastic and helpful staff who were wonderfully accommodating to our dietary (vegan) and other needs. They provided us with a load of additional vegan foods to add to the breakfast buffet and made sure we were contended at all times. Thanks so much Max Brown Team- you made our short holiday lovely

The location of the hotel is excellent, and the transportation is convenient; the room space is moderate.

Passengers carrying large luggage will be inconvenient to check in or leave; if the house is in the basement, the narrow spiral staircase is very difficult to carry luggage.

I stayed 2 nights with my friend. I had no complaints about the location and friendly stuff. But the room was smaller than I expected eventhough we upgraded to bigger room. Though the room was charming and clean. The stairs were amazingly steep but this is common in Amsterdam. So it was one a fun experience They have tasty coffee at breakfast and at the lounge too! Good for a trip with friends!

Remember you should only compare Amsterdam hotels to Hong Kong hotels, given their small size and high prices. For what it is and location is ok for short stay. Friendly staff, complimentary hotel bikes, walking distance to most attractions, shopping and museums.

Very nice hotel. Wonderful beds and a nice retro atmosphere with a pickup in the room and, for example, an old school telephone. In the lobby you immediately feel at home where you can also relax at the bar. You can book the excellent breakfast with us. The location of the hotel is excellent. Nice quiet street near the museums and the center. Parking difficult, this is possible on the street but paid until late, Sunday for free! Hereby also a big thank you for the friendly staff. I stayed there for business but also privately this hotel is definitely recommended!

PASS!! Too expensive for a tiny room, and mildewy shower. I could touch both walls at the same time. The bathroom was also tiny and had no ventilation. The front desk staff is smug. I mentioned that the room was twice as expensive as another hotel which had rooms 3x the size. The front desk staff tried to explain that it was in another city and in the off season...BS...it was 3 blocks away and just the previous week. Avoid this hotel.

Staff very friendly, location perfect. Unfortunately, we had a very soundproof double room and three with the neighbors no sleep. On complaint was called in the next room, but this only causes it to be louder. We would have wished that someone comes who cares for order. All in all, I have to say price does not match performance. 100 EUR per person and then in addition the local tax, which is a bummer (there are no perks) 6.66 per person per day is just amazing, especially as the breakfast buffet was very well arranged and the atmosphere as in a prison. Not even a welcome drink was there. The bathroom is simply not reasonable for 3 people

This is a great little hotel for the price, would recommend to anyone visiting. Friendly staff, cozy rooms and an elevator so you don't have to use the stairs. It is a short walk to the nearest restaurants and there are pleanty of types of food.
Lovely atmosphere in the bar that's open day and night in the reception.
Being in the museum district, there are many sites to see very close by. Check in to this place if you are coming to Amsterdam for a relaxed time.

The room was small and the bed was stuck to the window. The windows were not double glazed so we got cold at night. The bathroom was a stall shower. I find the price high for the services of the hotel.
Otherwise, the place is very clean and atypical. The staff are very professional and friendly. The breakfast is still ok.
The hotel is well located.
