This review solely pertains to PHL's skate sharpen...

This review solely pertains to PHL's skate sharpening. I went to PHL years ago for a skate sharpen and it was done very poorly, so I took my skates elsewhere to have them redone. Some time later I decided to try PHL again when they had a 50% off sale on their skate sharpening cards; it was a great value, but again I was disappointed, and sold the card to someone else.

This past week I was in a pinch to have my skates sharpened and decided to give PHL one more opportunity to get this right. The guy I spoke to in the shop was very nice and seemed knowledgable enough. We talked about how these new automatic sharpeners like Sparx compare to having it done manually, to which he said that having it done by hand will always be better. I asked for a 1/2" sharpen for a little more bite for my StepSteel even though I usually go with about 5/8". However, when I got out on the ice to play that night, I noticed immediately in warm-up that the edges were dull. There was very minimal bite and I lost an edge multiple times throughout play. My performance suffered due to yet another poor sharpening from PHL.

PHL is a great place to buy gear at reasonable prices, but I absolutely would not ever recommend PHL to anyone for their skate sharpening service. I would not even accept a free lifetime sharpening pass here based on how poorly my skates have been sharpened time and time again. Find yourself a good pro shop somewhere that actually knows what they're doing and will give you consistent, quality sharpenings each time.

Was at the store with my family on a friday night, my son was excited to get his first jersey. The manager kicked us out of the store for being loud and annoying while my son was laughing, he asked us to put the stuff we picked up back where we found it. A store like this should have some courtesy and clean up after customers especially if it s one jersey. The so called manager kicked us out and said we were showing him an attitude. Will not be returning after being embarrassed infront of the store for doing nothing wrong but being coloured skin apparently.

Had skates delivered to the store from their Calga...

Had skates delivered to the store from their Calgary store for me, when I came in to try them on they had one insole that came with the skate and the other one was a superfeet insole, the other original insole was missing so the only option for me was to buy superfeet with the skates I was told by sales guy. Not fair since it wasn t my fault one of the insoles were missing.

Worst service Ive ever seen. One girl trying to help 4 different people while 5 employees stand around near the entrance chatting. Left after waiting for help with skates for 15 minutes. Wont ever be back.

Four employees and I'm the only one around but no ...

Four employees and I'm the only one around but no one figured to ask if I needed help. Thought maybe walking circles in one section would give that hint away. Finally found what I'm looking for and went to the cashier who didn't say anything besides the total. Bad service. I've worked retail for years and I've never seen it this bad.

Pretty poor service from the skate sharpening folk...

Pretty poor service from the skate sharpening folks today - 2h estimate turned into almost 3 hours, and lip from the tech after I returned from the first come back in 20 mins re-estimate (I m allowed to question the accuracy of your first 2 failed attempts). Come on guys. Figure it out.

Has great potential with the amount of gear they have. To bad it's so poorly managed. Clearly understaffed, with people (guessing the manager) that can't even help out his employees. We were told that all his staff were busy and he walked away to wander around the store. I'll never go back.

Went in to find a jersey, had great help that greeted me promptly and assisted me on point. Wide array of hockey gear in a very clean store. Didn t have any problems at all here and would revisit for future buys as prices were also solid.

Interior layout is like a thrift store. Spent 30 minutes trying to find the ankle braces only to find out you have one small and 6 larges, no mediums, and no one that works in the store. Would not recommend going into this place, they deserve less than one star, worst managed business I ve ever seen.

While the gentleman I dealt with was pleasant enough (once he finally finished walking around with his coffee) the store itself is a joke... one size of skate to fit? Kind of makes it tough to make an educated purchase.

If this company wasn't owned and operated by another company with a big bank account would they still be around?

Will do my best to support the smaller family owned shops moving forward.

Worst service I have ever had. I took 2 jerseys in to have names put on them... that was 2 and a half months ago! Have called 3 separate times and never get any answers, they say they will look into it and call back and they don't. I have also gone in twice and still no answers. The only answer I get is its the contractor that they deal with to do the stitching... well obviously they need to re-evaluate who they hire to work for them. Unacceptable in my eyes.

Horrible customer service. I'm not one to give a bad review in any situation but when even the general manager shows he doesn't care and says these reviews don't matter to him I had to. Well done buddy. ... if you need anything I suggest Ryan the GM at the Mayfield store. Was willing to help even though it wasn't an issue with his store.

I brought in my skates to get sharpened a day prio...

I brought in my skates to get sharpened a day prior and took them to the ice that afternoon. The skates were biting on one edge and not the other on both skates. I brought them back to their shop and had one of their workers look at them. The skates were measured and I was told the edges were not levelled. The manager was able to resolve the issue and resharpen them for me without an additional charge.

I appreciate their service and for correcting the error.

I have had the same problem the previous time I got my skates sharpened here as well and had to bring them back to get redone. Hopefully they can resolve this issue for my future visits so I won t have to make an extra trip to the store.

Terrible terrible service. I really wanted to like...

Terrible terrible service. I really wanted to like this store. So much so that I drove an hour from out of town to give them my business. I kept coming back too! I have been in three times and the same response from staff -- I seem to be invisible.

Yesterday was typical of my experience. I walked past 4 employees who did not acknowledge me as I came in.

I spent an hour trying to find a fit in gloves and a helmet with zero help. I saw employees walk past, look down the ailse at me struggling with gear and just keep on walking!

The store was virtually empty and I got no attention.

Lots of stock but four young men who obviously don't care if they make any sales.

It's bizarre that when I look at the other reviews I see people very happy with the service. All I can say is I went in three different times -- twice before Covid -- and had the same terrible experience every time.

The other thing I see in the other reviews is that the skate sharpening manager has replied to bad reviews but nothing from the retail side. Just another big box store with uncaring management?

Though some expect a hockey store to carry for and cater to all athletic needs, Pro Hockey does an solid job at caring for the less mindful consumers.*cough* Preston *cough* Staff is knowledgable and helpful when asked about equipment and the sport itself. Always have been greeted with a smile. When in season, stuff flies off the shelves! That says a whole lot about selection and about service. All in all, one of the best hockey shops in town.

Low to no customer service. Staff seems to be more concerned about telling other staff how their day ways. Not one staff member acknowledgment coming in or out. Or anyone in section to ask about possible sizes.

Selection here isn't bad, but it's not much better...

Selection here isn't bad, but it's not much better than most other sports places. The staffing is certainly a weak point, however .I couldn't find anyone to assist, and that's even after going to the front cash, which was unmanned. I could have robbed the place blind, were I so inclined. I eventually had to call the store (from the front cash) just to get some assistance . Certainly not top marks. There place is clean, and generally well organized, though Jr and Sr goods are intermingled.

I had a wonderful associate help me. He was swamped and he still managed to bounce between multiple people, answer phones and essentially man the busiest part of the store by himself. I believe his name was Jed (or Jeb).. He deserves a raise. Good employee, good experience.
