My husband has been turned away 3x now. The second time they wouldn't see him because he needed 2 DD214's for being in special forces. The third time they scheduled him for an appointment on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He shows up for the appointment and nobody is there since it's an observed holiday. This is poor business overall. My husband has served his country honorably. And this is how we repay our respect to our veterans? This is the kind of stuff that happens across all VA's nationwide. This needs to change.

Today was my husband's first visit to the VA Hospital. We went there to visit the optical clinic for an eye exam and to order new glasses. We were most impressed with the professionalism and the care shown to us by every employee we encountered. Even though someone at the hospital had failed to record our scheduled appointment, we were greeted warmly and accommodated with less than a 30-minute wait. The healthcare team was excellent, and we were very pleased. Thank you all for a pleasant experience!

This Va medical center is amazing. The staff is absolutely the best we have ever dealt with, everyone is more then willing to help. The doctors are great, they actually help their patients and care! We did not meet an unfriendly person there and like I said everyone was more then willing to help in anyway they could. We even were created with friendly smiles and hellos just walking in the hallways. This Va is one of the best!

I'm a Marine Veteran. I was suffering from PTSD, depression, anxiety attacks, insomnia, paranoia, Sleep Apnea, and Kerataconus (a eye disease) in both my eyes. I finally went in... and boy they have helped me out tremendously, my doctors actually seemed like they cared for me and my family. They pay for my $800 per eye contacts, I now can sleep with my CPAP Machine, and meds are just a click away, I'm at a so much better place in my life because of the doctors and nurses here. Any veteran can expect a wait that's just the name of the game we are getting out of a decade + war OIF, OEF Veterans receiving care. Not to mention previous war Vets. So expect a wait. My service has been outstanding here!! Maybe I'm just lucky??!?! My only complaint is parking.....horrible!

Spent 50 minutes riding around both parking ramps between 9:30-10:30 on a Tuesday AM. Totally full. No signs up showing that. Saw Durham PD-ticketed cars parked outside ramp at curbs, costing those Veterans $20 each. They really need an auxiliary parking area with some form of on-demand shuttle service.
Went home, will book another visit at a CBOC.

I'm a 62 year old male diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, my doctor gave me 12 months to live. I underwent an extreme surgery called the Whipple
and spent 35 days at the Durham VA. I'm alive and well / cancer free.
I can not give more praise to DR.WHITE and DR.HENRY and the entire staff
at the VA. Can not say enough as they were with me 24 hours a day.
This was not easy as the nurses called CODE BLUE on me and with their
expertise brought me back to life. I'm at home and doing fine and have a
Special place in my heart for all at the Durham VA. The BEST place !!!!

My husband made a call to see what primary doctor he would be seeing...the receptionist was way out of line .instead of calling him by his name it was love and baby...this is unprofessional. Dealing with a veteran and a married one at that is beyond me . No respect putting my husband in an awkward position to respond on the call . After the call he was like I hope my doctor is at least professional...No respect for him or his family. Never delt with this kind of mannerisms before. Where do they get their administrative training from?? The VA should hold high standards for everyone working with our veterans and families.

There phone system SUCKS. Busy 90% of the time, the other 10% you get someone who hangs up on you. I don't want to hear a 5 minuets speech EVERY time I call in Diane. Why cant they go to the same phone system other VA hospitals have, where you can enter an extension right away?

I'm a Vietnam Vet. I've been going to the Durham VA for over two years and have been treated with the utmost care and respect in all departments...PCP, X-Ray, Lab, Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, Audiology, Mental Health, and Information & Records. I feel blessed to have this facility and staff nearby..

Been trying to register so I can make an appointment for weeks now. Durham VA doesn't recognize my SS#. I'm already registered at a different VA but that would make too much sense for them to be able to pull those records. So anyway, have to call the registration # but it goes directly to voicemail and says someone will call me back in 1 business day. Nope. Next week same drill. Next week same drill. This week, can't leave a VM because the mailbox is full. Directed me to an operator which then hung up after 2 rings. Called back, this time somebody picked up, I heard breathing then they hung up on me. They make it so cumbersome that it makes you just want to say f'k it.

Well, fecal matter is stacked high here. Clueless on neurological issues, along with everything else medical. Felt like I was in Soviet era hospital. Very depressing. Wish politicians had to use it. They would think differently about forcing people to use substandard health care.
How many of these 5 star reviews are from VA employees?

My father recently spent 3 weeks in the Durham VA. It was an unexpected illness that ended up taking his life. During the 3 weeks, we were in several different areas of the hospital including the Emergency Department, Surgical Unit and SICU, the 7 floor B Wing, and Hospice. Our family can not say enough about the treatment and care that he received. The Doctors, Surgeons, and Nurses were so caring and compassionate to my father as well as to our entire family. I will never forget the morning we transferred to Hospice, the doctors came by to say goodbye and let him know how honored they were to have been able to treat him. The nurses seemed to line the hall to say goodbye, and shower our family with love, hugs, and kisses. You will never know how much you have impacted our family and helped to ease the worst days of our lives. Thank you to you all - The Family of Calvin Easter

Very unprofessional I spoke with a representative named "Ruby" she was very rude and unprofessional. I even have recordings I plan to leak online to show everyone how the VA treats veterans. I tried to take the issues up with a supervisor but I keep getting ran in circles. In my opinion no matter if you are a Veteran or not you should be treated with dignity and respect. If you want this DO NOT go here. I will be posting the recording shortly so that you can decide.

This facility was the worst VA experience I've had. Waited two months for minor surgery procedure. Attended all the pre operation visits included invasive exams major blood work EKG etc and just before surgery they call and say I've been canceled and if I want another date it will be two to three months AND I will have to travel the two hours twice before surgery again. How could I ever trust they won't screw me again and cancel!! Grossly unprofessional and utterly negligent in their scheduling!!!! If I could put negative stars I would!!!

If I could give negative stars I would. I've had multiple issues here and today called in a prescription refill THREE hours ago. Here I am sitting in the waiting area waiting for them to fill it. Nothing but bad service and care is what we have experienced. My husband didn't put his life on the line to be treated like this. Will be transferring him to a different veterans hospital ASAP

Bottom line, nothing new with the VA. Been trying every decade or so for the last 40+ years to use the benefits I supposedly earned. Lots of nice talk, fancy websites, long time-wasting telephone systems, etc., but no real, useful change. Good at spouting the "Thank you for your service," that has become a meaningless figure of speech. The Durham center was very friendly, but just another fruitless waste of time.

So where do I begin? My primary health care doctor sucks. I tell her what's wrong and instead of accessing the situation she just wants to pumps me with sleep sedatives...and still expect for you to make your early morning appointments. The ER is horrible. I told them the 3 things that were wrong with me, they only worried about 1, which were my swollen feet. No x-rays were performed on my back or feet which I complained about. I basically took an hour drive for them to order me compression socks, which will be mailed to me. A complete waste of time. Not to mention my feet are still swollen and my back is still giving me issues. No need to try and call the number for the Choice Program to see someone closer because they're going to tell me I can't. Utterly disappointed in this health care system.

Horrible staff! Dr was nice but all the other staff were rude and extremely hateful!!! They treated us like we were nothing. I hated the experience and had to wait an hour after they told us to be there 30 mins early. So that means 1hr and 30 mins after we drove 2 hrs and 30 mins to get there. If this wasn't the only hand surgeon for VA I would not go back!!! After my dad's hand surgery I will go across the US before I go back to this VA !!!!!!!!

They need a better receptionist. Once when I called she had a nasty attitude and hung up on me. Today, I was on hold for a total of 45 minutes because she kept transferring me to the wrong department. I started my call around 3:15 and never got to speak with anyone in my doctors office. People from the other department she transferred me to tried to help me. I am wondering if she gets overwhelmed with all of the calls and do not pay attention to detail. That may be why she kept sending me to the wrong department.

Spent my fathers last month, here in hospice. They were great to him and to my Aunt and I. They became like family while I was 600 miles from mine. They counseled me during this time and always checked in to see if I just needed to talk. After dad passed, they sent cards signed by the staff that worked w him. They even called to check in more than a month later. I am back in town today, so I am headed back to tell them how much I appreciated everything.

Over worked and under staffed this facility has to many people who don't know what the correct thing is to tell Vets because it's the training hospital and to be honest most of them don't have a clue what's going on. Wait weeks and weeks to hear back about referrals. Your PCP might take 3 days sometimes a week to get back to you. It took them 3 months to authorize more PT appointments for me by which time my physical therapist said they undid all the positive improvements we had made before I ran out of visits because they waited so long. My therapist has pushed me off on groups despite multiple requests for 1on1 therapy. The place is such a wreck and offers such subpar care over an extended period of time for vets who have lots of health problems that I've sent my senator a letter.

She printed off information for me to have me better informed of taking care of my father. She seen that i was tired and offered a recliner and let me sleep for a little i can t thank her enough for everything she did today

I always have had high regards for the VA Medical Center. My husband visited the Raleigh branch in June of this year. An appointment was suppose to be made for breathing test and chest xrays. He did blood work there in Raleigh. No call about blood work results. Took them from June to September to make the appointment that was needed. They contacted him to make an appointment by mail. He went to Durham to do the breathing test, but no chest xrays. It is now October and no results from his breathing test. He was told he would be contacted in 5 - 9 days with the results. Nothing yet. If there is a serious problem, I think they are taking a big risk.

I have been trying to make an appointment for a me...

I have been trying to make an appointment for a mental evaluation. I submitted a request online. A nice and seemingly helpful man called me and made my appointment. On the day of the appointment I went online to confirm the time and department. There is nothing noted. So I called. After staying on hold for 20 minutes a woman answers confirms that the first man never made an appointment for me and sends me to the dreaded compensation department. I explain to the man who answered what I needed and he starts to give me his whole spiel about how the approval from compensation works. I am already rated and know the process so I politely interrupt and asked if he can just transfer me back to the appointment line from whence I came. He ignores me and continues with his spiel. At the end I thank and congratulate him and state my request again. He replies that he cannot transfer me. I hang up and try the whole thing over. After remaining on hold AGAIN I decide to try again online and submit another request. I receive a message in the portal to call the eligibility line. Like everyone else here I was unable to leave a message because this woman's voicemail is full. This is so very frustrating and borderline infuriating. I'm not sure why these people work here . . . oh wait they don't. Do better.

I have been trying to get into the Hillandale Clinic because I drive past the clinic to get to Fulton Street location however it seems this not possible. I have been to advocate and still no progress. It seems you must have some special access word to get in. The Durham VA wants to try having clinics but the process to get into one is so backwards what is the use to have many clinics if the process is knotted up so you can't get in.

This is the most pathetic hospital I've ever been to. Black mold all over the 7th floor, half the water fountains don't work. Multiple bathrooms are out of order, it took 2 hrs to be seen (and misdiagnosed) by my Primary care clinic, 1F, then another 2 hours just to fill a prescription. Not to mention the anesthesiologist, David Lindsey, who was trying have sex with my girlfriend for several months, even though he knew full and well she was dating a veteran who was a patient at his place of employment. I now drive 2 hrs to Winston Salem in order to avoid this decrepit, horribly staffed "hospital" .

Don't count on decent care. No counseling available so they just medicate and send you on your way. If you were injured in your early 20's and are in pain when you're older, the doc will tell you "it's because you're over 40". When you try to explain it's been since my 20's he will respond and say "well, we know it's not mental" Your best bet is to try to fight for fee base.

Omggg..They are the worse..I've been waiting over a month now to see a community physical therapist in my area which was authorized by Va. I was told if I didn't get a call from the therapist in my area I should call the therapist that saw me at the va.. Well a month later I still haven't seen a therapist in my area.. Left multiple messages never got a response until today.. Spoke to the therapist and someone who approve for me to go to the community therapist.. I was told by both I would get a call back well guess what I never did. Meanwhile I'm in a lot of pain that I had to schedule to see my primary doctor for something to ease the pain

The care provided by the doctors and specialists is awesome. If they can only get the clinics to answer their phone it would be perfect. The only people who answer the phone is the main switchboard. I got transferred four times to Dermatology.. Each time no one answered and i got automatically disconnected. We have to have better online service to contact the providers directly.

After being transferred a total of 11 times trying to establish healthcare I never actually talked to anyone more than a sentence and they said "I will transfer you". I still was unable to get a resolution to my problem. This is just a total travesty that I can call several numbers and spend an hour and 15 minutes of my life on the phone and not even get a resolution. Totally unacceptable. Additionally, a couple people I interacted with barely spoke English and sounded half-dead. Please get people in there that care about Vets/patients and want to show up to work every day. Absolutely ridiculous.

I called to make an appointment in Raleigh. The Raleigh clinic split up recently so I was transferred to the Durham hospital. Here they got my information and told me that some one would contact me in up 5-7 days. That is just to tell me what VA facility I can go to and assign me to a doctor..... Why? I have been to the VA last year to have other medical attention, why cant my I continue to go to the facility that is closer to me or the one I prefer? But really, 5-7 DAY!!! just for someone to tell me where to go.... how much thought needs to go into that? I just wanted to make an appointment for a week from today.

This place is a mess. Parking is a mess, staffing is a mess and they have no consideration for anyone's time. My father has been going to the VA for years in NJ. How come a franchise like McDonalds or Chick Fil A can maintain a consistent product anywhere you are with minimum wage employees and the government cant even come close with well paid people who have outstanding benefits? Time to clean house and get some professional people who appreciate the job they have.
Every time I call to arrange an appointment for my father the switchboard transfers me to some rude individual who wants to talk to me like I am bothering them. The people in the lobby are too busy sitting on the rear ends to help the handicapped vets when you drop them off. This system is BROKEN.

First off, the VA does have some good doctors, I'll give them that. However the check-in and other areas of the hospital seem to have people sitting on computers looking around and doing nothing. I also have a problem with the scheduling. I have been rescheduled so many times I gave up going to the VA. The time wasted getting the run around makes going to the VA for something like an ingrown toenail not even worth it. I have heard from many vets that they stay away from this VA like the plague. It does seem also that this VA in particular is privy to certain people when it comes to their workforce. I won't say what type of people but it's obviously biased. The staff in some areas can be rude however in some the staff are friendly. It really depends on what level of care you are looking for. All in all, I find this facility to be too difficult to navigate and not worth the effort unless their can be some changes. This facility has made my life somewhat difficult because I spent too much time trying to navigate it. In the end it tired me out and made me apathetic to the VA in general. In light of the new VA info, I think I'll go elsewhere if I need help. Update: If you cancel an appointment the VA in Durham asks why you are cancelling. No vet is under any obligation to tell a VA receptionist why they are cancelling. Numerous times I have had cancelled appointments and never received any explanation. I value my privacy but evidently the VA thinks it's public record. Proudly served USMC 1981-1985 USNR 1988-1990

My husband was misdiagnosed twice, once including last week. The ER denied a cat scan against his PC's advice/referral. He began to dedicate blood, excruciating abdominal pain, etc. They "diagnosed" him with diarrhea and bloating, aren't those symptoms and not a diagnosis? Anyway, I made him go to UNC, they did the cat scan and blood work and found out he has acute pancreatitis and a swollen live. The UNC doctor said he needs to see a GI Specialist because it could be Ulcerative Colitis or Colon Cancer, either way, it is life threatening at this stage. I cannot BELIEVE that facility and how nobody has sued them yet.......Oh and I wont even get on how rude the staff is there......then they wonder why people like me get so mad and agitated.

Veterans deserve better.

Veterans deserve better.

Helpful Staff members are hard to come by. Most are apathetic and unconcerned with the patients needs. Long wait times on the phone only to be disconnected before speaking to an operator of any sort. Something needs to happen to fix the gross negligence displayed here.

It s no wonder there veterans who leave the VA and shoot themselves in their cars.

Miss diagnosed, twice. They never made any of the follow up appointments they said they would, on any time I have gone here. Almost blinded me even after telling them I was allergic to penicillin, I was prescribed penicillin based antibiotic eye drops.

Literally every single time you call the appointment line, every singe time, the minimum wait will be 45 minutes. That is the minimum.

Rude staff.

I waited for 2 hours in the lobby before breaking down and asking why I wasn't seen only to discover they never printed my charts and sent my paperwork back to the doctor.

Parking is horrible.

Tiny, cramped, and feels unclean.

The prescription window is the biggest joke here. They say go wait for your name to appear on the screen... yeah, I can't see the screen. They had no alternative when I brought that up.

I left the VA in Durham earlier today ( ORTHO DEPT ). The 2 different Doctors and PA evaluated my knee, they all said I don't need to worry. Gave me a brace ( 3rd one since monday ) and said come back in 2 weeks. Ask about getting the fluid drained and they all said no, your good. I went over to the ROC Raleigh Orthopedic Clinic on Edward Mill road and Nick my PA said right away that I was in the wrong brace and needs to drain the fluid. I feel so much better now thanks to someone who took time to look at my problem NOT just get me in and out without truly evaluating all ways to get me relief. I was in the ER at VA on the 29th and received 2 shots for pain and The Nurse never wore gloves and didn't put on a bandaid. The bandaid may seem minor but I had blood clots and I bleed easy now and my shirt had blood on both sleeves when i left. I would like a follow up.

Well. It's free (for me; I have a disability). The doctors are super good; they all split time between the VA and Duke Hospital across the street, so don't let people tell you the VA docs aren't good, at least at Durham. But, the place is way overcrowded and busy and it takes forever to get an appointment to do anything at all. You have to go to the emergency room if you don't have three weeks to wait to be seen.

First time I tried to use them I was told I needed to get into their system, the lady sent me paperwork to register... a month later it arrived. I sent it in and about three months later I was in the system. (4 months count) I requested an appointment for my shoulder (service related), they sent me to a local VA provider... who had a two month wait. (6 months now) He said I need an MRI and scheduled one for the following week, the VA disapproved it and said it needed to go through them. They set me up an appointment with a Physician's assistant... three month wait (9 months now), who said I could get an MRI if I wanted (he didn't think it was necessary), and he would reevaluate. Two weeks for the MRI and another six weeks to see him again. (11 months now) He recommended I see a doctor... 2 month wait (13 months) The doctor recommended Physical Theory while awaiting microscopic surgery. Said I should get a card to start my PT in about a week. Three weeks later I get a card telling me I need a VA PT consult first and it is schedule for a week from now. The VA PT department agrees I need PT and says it will start in about a week. Two weeks later, have a six week follow up with a doctor. (14.5 months now) Different doctor and still no PT sessions. New doctor tells me she will put in another request for the PT and has no idea how long it will be until a surgery can be scheduled. At 16 months and six sick days used for medical appointments (still no PT scheduled), I gave up and went to a private physician. Additionally, you don't get to set up an appointment, you get a card in the mail with an appointment on it, if you cant make that you call them and eventually you'll get another card with a new appointment time, and if you can't make that one... it can go on like this forever. I can't comment on what kind of health care they provide, I never received any!

I came into the ER on Monday after having terrible abdomen pain the whole weekend and was admitted for Pancreatitis. The staff on 6A were absolutely AMAZING... I can t remember all of their names but TK, Dion, Anna, Sarah and Andrea are just a few of the Angels that took care of me ( I apologize for not remembering everyone). Could not be worse. As an honorably served Paratrooper with more than twenty two commendations, I am appalled first, by the "assistants" that are not U.S. citizens, cannot, or will not use the English language, are being paid well with our tax dollars, but refuse to help in every capacity.
The signage doesn't match the department. Try to find endocrinology and you will end up in phlebotomy. Just one example of many. It's a poor reflection on the endocrinology staff member whom recently, (last week), told me to get my white cracker ass out of her chair. I'm 100 percent disabled and crippled. I'm also a very civil person. I immediately left and went to the advocate's office. How ironic it was to be telephoned from the clinic and asked to return before I was able to explain this racist comment and refusal of medical care even though I had an appointment.
My assigned primary care physician, Dr. India Reid, will not respond to secure messaging nor respond to my phone calls. She once responded after being asked to do so by an upper echelon. Avoid this doctor if at all possible. In my opinion, this doctor would be unemployable at any and all other health care facilities due to inabilities to perform or even pass the most basic middle school tests. The DVAMC is a perfect example of "affirmative action", that is, discrimination against more qualified individuals based upon the color of one's skin. The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. would be in tears if he saw the discrimination taking place today, and the poor treatment of veterans due to their skin color.
The director should be fired after my 92 yr. old step-father, decorated Green Beret, Special Forces, was deliberately pushed outside during a rainstorm while in a wheelchair, just hours after open heart surgery, just because he is a Native American. The perpetrator of this deed could not be subjected to administrative action because of his special status.
Most employees here are not veterans and care nothing about them at all, and in fact, hate them if it means they may be asked to work. It is nearly impossible to fire a government employee, especially if they are an affirmative action individual. Too bad we are not all held to the same standards and, in fact, less is expected from some than others due to discriminatory policies. I'm certain you will also conclude that upon interaction with these employees, you'll also "know", they were not even able to fill out their job application forms themselves.
