Beuatiful grounds nestled in Delaware. Excellent tours and historical information available.
A gem to visit. Gives a very good historical accounting and demonstration of DuPont powder mills
Awesome place to go to. Our your guide was fantastic and funny.
I've been here 3 times, always with different members of the family, it's the beginning history of the Dupont family. Nice museum, there is a nice little cafe that serves organic style lunches, nothing fancy. Places is very nice, museum was established in the early 1950's and improvements have come along over time, many volunteers support the museum. I like the museum, the displays of the steam engine, the repair shop, and the main museum, at the front. You may not have enough time to make it a day, it's that big. The grounds are excellent. It competes with many other excellent nearby attractions. Good for the older generation. Being here 3 times, I don't mind coming back.
We are members but decided to go on one of the coldest days of this winter so far... The place is beautiful, even when there is no green in the trees... The staff are delightful and made the best of it when the welcome center suddenly lost power... On the shuttle up to the house, we saw a bald eagle swooping over the Brandywine River looking for fish and on the way back we saw him perched in a tree. Hagley is well worth a visit in any weather...
Beautiful historic spot. Make sure to watch the powder sounding demo.
Amazing place for the scientifically minded! If you have any interest in chemistry you'll love the place. The gunpowder mills, the water-powered systems, and the museum on the history of the DuPont company (much of which involves polymers) are first-rate.
The Hagley Museum, might be better named and more widely recognized if it was called 'The DuPont Gunpowder Museum'. This is where it all started when the French immigrant, E.I. du Pont bought several hundred acres of land beside the Brandywine River and built both the family home and the gunpowder mills that made the fortunes of generations of du Ponts. The original family home, which sits on a hill overlooking the powder mills is restored and can be toured. Nowadays, this former industrial site is a living museum, and a testament to the methods of early American industrialization, where you can observe how water turbines and later a steam engine supplied the power needed to keep the power mills running. There are daily demonstrations in the machine shop and even a live demonstration of a black powder detonation. Highly recommended.
Love the demos and the guides are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the historic features.
Very interesting. Be sure to go down to the work area by the water.
Wonderful history of the DuPont family and their origins. History of the Brandywine River mills and industry of the area is very interesting and educational.
We took the evening tour of Hagley for the holidays. Fabulous! Our dolcent shared so many great stories of the duPont's and their history. This is a don't miss hidden gem of an event. Go if you have a chance!
This was my first visit, there is lots of historical structures left to see. The grounds are extensive, and its along the Brandywine River, so its nice for a hike too. I enjoyed the mansion tour and had a nice lunch at the cafe. There's not a lot of food places close by (I saw none on the way in), so pack a lunch if you are making a day of it, but I enjoyed the cafe. I ended up spending almost 6 hours here, taking pictures, and a leisurely self guided tour. The little buses take you around the site, if you wish. Its not really a place for young children, but I would say 7 and up would enjoy it. Its also a great place for couples, I saw they have picnic dinners for 2 on select days in the summer and would make a romantic date. I came on a weekday, so after the school groups left in the morning, I had the place mostly to myself. I definitely want to come back! Update: I came back for a Christmas tour, and it was worth the 2nd trip, I saw and learned things I hadn't on my 1st visit, and everyone is so friendly! I plan on a spring visit. Hagley is great in any season!
The museum was fascinating. It goes into how the DuPonts started to make their fortune. You can tour their first house which is nice but nothing like the later mansions in grandiosity. The really interesting part is the mill. They made black powder for guns and cannons etc. Great exhibits and explanations. Also, live demonstrations of a metal working shop, and tours of the mill buildings.
We just recently joined and made a couple visits but still have not seen all that the Hagley has to offer. The DuPont company was and still is a great example of American entrepreneurship and this museum offers a glimpse of how French immigrants came across the Atlantic and helped make America great.
Ok, enough platitudes. The Hagley is a great place to take the kids with plenty of outdoor activities and demonstrations (the gunpowder demonstration is my fave!). You can't do it all in one day.
Again, we haven't explored all there is but by being members, we are eligible to attend the classic car show and the Independence Day fireworks, both of which are considered the best in the region. I'm also looking forward to seeing it decorated at Christmas time.
The guides were fantastic. We started with a great welcome from Laura Beasley. Then house tour by Rodney Simmons to machine shop Debbie Krape then roll mill Bill Baldwin. They all did a great job. Must see.
Such a beautiful place! Really a very inexpensive outing for the family and worth every penny. We went on a science Saturday with 2 10 year old girls and they were thoroughly entertained all afternoon. Get there early in the day so you have plenty of time to truly experience everything they have to offer.
Best place ever. Other museums and locations talk about water powered, but it is alive and well here at Hagley.
Science Saturday was a blast. Great place to take a family.
Awesome area to pat a visit. Loved to be able to take photos and learn the history of the powder mill!
Amazing museum! A lot of history from the 19th century. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Turn of the century machines and power generation museum.
A wonderful look at 19th century engineering and technology. The staff are friendly and helpful as well as exceptionally knowledgeable! Great place to visit if you're into the history of technology.
Love this place! Relaxing just to walk around but Science Saturdays are fun for the kids. Many things to see and do.
Good but horrible horrible place for young children. Many tour guides were quite rude about kids being there. As we went during the week when the kids portion was not available to the public. Other then that it was a beautiful place and well kept landscaping with wonderful history. We just won't go back with kids unless the kids portion was open
Beautiful is museum showing off how gunpowder used to be made. Note, office hours (closed on weekends) are different from museum hours (Open on weekends)
Wonderful museum and pleasant walks. A go to Sunday afternoon destination!
We went and not a lot is open but there were still guides to tell us about the grounds.
Nice Staff and great explanations about the historical products made there. Kids were very interested in all matters.
The lady that does the tour of the bedroom upstairs needs to learn how to deal with children. She seemed really stressed out and constantly saying don't do this and don't do that. I don't recommend this place for young children especially those with behavior issues. The parking for buses is a hike and a half and it was freezing cold outside. The school house teacher was nice and so was the gentleman who does the cookies.
Really nice machinery demonstrations, the third floor of the museum has a discovery interactive section that's great for kids.
This is a fantastic place. We had only a morning to spend here last August and didn't have time to finish everything. We're planning to go back this year. There's a little bus to take you around to the house and various other sites. Don't miss the demonstration of how they tested the gunpowder. Just the natural setting (wonderful huge trees and a river) is worth the ticket price, but there's so much more--very educational, too. I believe if you buy your ticket after 2 PM, you can come back the next day. Kids would love it, too. Lots of things to do outdoors as well as the museum. Plan to spend the day.
It was great. So glad we went. The tour guides are very professional and the tours are so informative. Well worth the money
The outdoor stuff like the mill ruins was pretty neat to explore (even in the cold and rain). The mansion was kind of underwhelming and not at all as you'd expect from a Dupont house.
Great museum with lots of information about Dupont family and history of Delaware.
What a great museum! No matter what you like, this is a great museum. Great 19th Century history. Wonderful hands-on science exhibits for kids. Beautiful gardens and grounds. Industrial technology. So much to see and so well presented. Love it!
Love that place. Especially walking around and learning about gunpowder and how it works. Berlin house restaurant food was deliciously.
i havent exactly been there, but i have heard good n bad....my grandfather Roy Boatman helped establish the hagley museum
Excellent Du Pont estate museum, staff is very friendly and knowledge, well worth the admission multiple times over!
Beautiful area for walks along the river. Many interesting views and displays.
Jackie Bouvier helped curate the property when it transitioned into a museum
Great place to visit and get some local and National history. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The E.I. Dupont House was beautiful inside and out. The displays and exhibits are great to experience, some coming to life with stories, lights, and movement.
