DUF – Danish Youth Council: Empowering Young People to Participate in Society
DUF, or the Danish Youth Council, is a national umbrella and interest organization for children and youth organizations in Denmark. Its mission is to promote young people's participation in civil society and democracy by providing them with opportunities to engage in various activities that foster their personal growth, social skills, and civic engagement.
Founded in 1940, DUF has been working tirelessly for over 80 years to empower young people across Denmark. It represents more than 70 member organizations that collectively reach out to over half a million children and young people every year. These member organizations include sports clubs, cultural associations, political parties' youth wings, environmental groups, humanitarian organizations, religious communities' youth groups - just to name a few.
DUF's work revolves around three main pillars: advocacy & representation; capacity building & training; and international cooperation & exchange programs.
Advocacy & Representation
As an umbrella organization for children and youth organizations in Denmark, DUF plays an essential role as a voice for young people at the national level. It advocates for policies that promote young people's rights and interests while also raising awareness about issues affecting them.
DUF works closely with policymakers at all levels of government to ensure that they take into account the needs of young people when making decisions that affect their lives. It also collaborates with other civil society actors such as trade unions or NGOs on issues related to education policy reform or climate change mitigation strategies.
Capacity Building & Training
One of DUF's core functions is providing training opportunities for its member organizations' staff members and volunteers. Through its various training programs such as leadership development courses or project management workshops - DUF equips these individuals with the necessary skills needed to run successful projects targeting children and young people effectively.
Moreover, DUF provides funding support through grants schemes aimed at supporting innovative projects initiated by its member organizations. These grants are awarded based on merit and the potential impact of the project on young people's lives.
International Cooperation & Exchange Programs
DUF recognizes that young people's challenges and opportunities are not limited to Denmark alone. Therefore, it has established partnerships with youth organizations in other countries worldwide to promote cross-cultural exchange programs.
Through these exchange programs, young people get a chance to learn about different cultures, languages, and ways of life while also developing their social skills. DUF also participates in international conferences and forums where it shares its experiences with other youth organizations worldwide.
