I wish people would take into consideration that being understaffed is an actual critical problem and not just words!!! They should feel fortunate that they're even allowed to visit at all because visiting and everything that goes along with it really drain an almost drained dry system that's trying to scrape by...and let's everyone get real for a moment, the patients aren't in there for picking flowers! If the patient and/or their family/friends/visitors don't appreciate getting to be at DeBerry, the remedy is simple...put the patients in general population of a maximum security prison with no visits, phone calls, mail, or commissary and give their bed slot to someone who is in more need and is more respectful! After a couple years of that people will realize how fortunate they were to be at DeBerry. If people want change at DeBerry whining and complaining isn't productive! If you want change then you need to get active in finding more funding...whether it be through starting a non-profit, or through a penny tax increase, or raffle drive, or reading/athletic sponsorships, etc your actions will go much further than just complaining.

And to the unappreciative gal who named off each person that wouldn't let her in due to her underwire bra, you have wasted time, money, and energy that could have went towards facility care. You should have been grateful that even though the staff is doggedly overworked and embarrassingly underpaid they were still diligent enough about keeping everyone, staff, patients, and visitors including yourself, safe by complying with the rules.

To the Warden Lois DeBerry,

To the Warden Lois DeBerry,
You have unfair practices being operated in your facility, totally against your guiding principles that are posted on your website. Therefore, I am requesting a special visit on Tuesday, May 29, 2018.
I visited your Lois DeBerry facility today, Monday, May 28, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and was unfairly turned away by a lady called Miss Harris.
I arrived approximately 10:30 am and spoke with Officer Lundsford to confirm that I had on the appropriate attire. She advised me that I was dressed appropriately and that they would start letting people in at 11:30 a.m. I did not get checked in until 1 p.m. After passing through the metal detector and the so-called cell phone tower I was advised that I could not go back unless Miss Harris approved, it was her discretion, which I waited approximately 30 minutes until she arrived. This was not the process that was follow for others who caused the machine to beep. I saw a young woman with blue jean pants on, the Bates/Batts family, who did not successfully pass the cell tower but was allowed to enter the facility.
I asked if I could be allowed to change my undergarment as that could possibly be the cause and I was told that I was turned down for good for today with no explanation. I asked to speak to Lieutenant Howard who also advised me that he could not let me in. I advise them of the unfair practices and he said he still would not allow me to enter the facility . I was also rudely spoken to by an officer by the name of officer Majek... who told me to get out of the facility and continue to badger me and say more rude things to me as I walked out of the facility. I asked his supervisor Lt. Howard if he could stop him from being so rude. Officer Majek continued until I left the building.
This is by far the worst I've ever experienced when coming to a prison to visit whether as a family member or as a clergy.
As indicated above you have unfair practices that are being operated. No one was able to show me the policy for being turned away. Also you have rude staff such as officer Majek... who refused to provide me his full last name.
I traveled a long ways and I'm looking to be able to see my relative before I travel back home Wednesday. I am requesting a special pass for Tuesday, May 29, 2018. I am also requesting an apology from the Officer Majek... who was extremely rude or I recommend he be terminated from your facility. Also I highly recommend that you update your handbook appropriately and ensure that your staff is trained accordingly. When it comes down to being fair then there has to be consistency and policy followed, today I cannot tell you that you followed Fair practices because you did something totally opposite for another family member.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible with resolution. If you are unable to Grant my wishes for May 29th then I would like for expense paid trip back to DeBerry to see my family member.
Thank you for understanding my concerns.
If you have time I recommend you review your video tape and it will tell the story. Very devastated by everything that has happened today. I hope that you are able to provide the best resolution.
Thank you for your time.

It is a very nice place for a Prison hospital. The staff are wonderful and take good care of the people . The place is clean, the inmates are dressed nicely and the food I hear needs great improvement . All in all its good as far as I see for the sick and the dying.

Like all other prisons in the state of TN, this facility is extremely under staffed. The majority of the staff uses unchecked power to run things as they like.
Prisoners legal and human rights are violated at will on a regular basis.
Do not expect to have your questions answered here. You will get no answer from a phone call, but will be redirected to another line where you cannot leave a message. If after a weeks time, you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to leave a message, no one will return your call. If you are inadvertently connected to a person, you can expect them to have a bad attitude and pass the buck. The buck stops nowhere in the TN legal system, including this prison. If you continue to follow the vague latter of responsibility up the system ladder, you will find the exact same response up to and including the commissioners office.
If you are mired in the corrupt TN legal system, you will find this prison no different than all the others.

My son died there in2015 at Lois DeBerry. He had been on dialysis for type 2 diabetes. They had messed up his dialysis(as they had done several times before) . He had gotten an infection after the dialysis was done incorrectly. He became swollen and unable to keep anything he trye to eat down and unable to stand up without support. Before when this would happen, they knew he must be taken to General Hospital for corrective treatment. There were NO medical staff at Lous Deberry Special Needs Facility. I spoke with my son several times the week before he passed away, and for the last time, 3 days before he passed. He told me what he was going through and I assured him that they would take him to General for treatment. He was only taken to General 3 days later when he had become unresponsive. Before this dialysis mess up two weeks before he had been doing well.+0 They watch him go into unresponsive state before having him taken to General to be pronounced dead. He and his cellmates had tried to get him taken to General until he became unresponsive. This facility have little or no qualified medical staff, so they just let good people die.
