DC College Access Program: Empowering Students to Achieve Their Dreams
DC College Access Program (DC-CAP) is a non-profit organization that has been helping students in Washington, D.C. achieve their dreams of attending college since 1999. DC-CAP provides comprehensive college readiness and success programs to students in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and public charter schools.
The mission of DC-CAP is to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college-bound students who enroll in and graduate from college. The organization believes that every student deserves access to higher education, regardless of their background or financial situation.
To achieve its mission, DC-CAP offers a range of services and programs that help students navigate the complex process of applying for and attending college. These include:
College Application Assistance: DC-CAP provides one-on-one support to help students complete their college applications, including assistance with essays, transcripts, test scores, and financial aid forms.
Financial Aid Advising: DC-CAP helps families understand the financial aid process and identify sources of funding for college. The organization also offers scholarships to eligible students.
College Success Coaching: Once enrolled in college, DC-CAP continues to support students through coaching sessions focused on academic success strategies such as time management skills, study habits development etc.
Career Exploration & Internships: Through partnerships with local businesses & organizations , DC CAP provides opportunities for high school juniors & seniors explore career options through internships or job shadowing experiences
In addition to these services , Dc Cap also organizes workshops on topics such as SAT/ACT preparation , FAFSA completion etc., which are open not only for its own program participants but all high schoolers across Washington D.C..
Since its inception over two decades ago , more than 26k+ low-income high school graduates have received support from Dc Cap's programs . Over 80% percent have enrolled into colleges/universities across US while many others have pursued vocational training or joined military service .
One unique aspect about this program is that it assigns each student a dedicated advisor who works with them throughout their high school years until they graduate from post-secondary education . This personalized approach ensures that each student receives individualized attention tailored towards his/her specific needs .
