Constitutional Accountability Center: Fulfilling the Progressive Promise of Our Constitution
Constitutional Accountability Center (CAC) is a unique organization that combines the expertise of a think tank, the advocacy skills of a law firm, and the activism of an action center to promote and defend progressive values based on our Constitution's text and history. Founded in 2008 by Doug Kendall, CAC has become a leading voice in constitutional law and policy, with a team of experienced lawyers, scholars, communicators, and organizers who work together to advance justice, equality, democracy, and human dignity.
At its core, CAC believes that our Constitution is not just a historical document or an abstract theory but a living framework for democratic governance that must evolve with changing times and challenges. CAC seeks to interpret the Constitution in light of its original meaning as well as its enduring principles such as liberty, equality, due process, separation of powers, federalism, and individual rights. CAC also recognizes that constitutional interpretation is not neutral or objective but shaped by political ideologies and power relations. Therefore,CAC aims to promote progressive values through strategic litigation, campaigns, and communications.

Another area where CAC plays an important role is constitutional interpretation.CAC publishes reports, papers, and articles on various topics related to constitutional law, such as originalism, textualism, living constitution, judicial review, federalism, due process, equal protection, and human rights.CAC also hosts events, such as conferences, summits, and webinars,to bring together scholars, judges, policymakers, and activists from diverse backgrounds to discuss current issues facing our democracy.
Moreover,CAC engages in public educationand outreachto raise awareness about constitutional issues among various audiences.Cac produces podcasts, videos, blogs, tweets, and other social media contentto explain complex legal conceptsin plain languageand connect themto real-life situations.Cac also provides training sessionsfor lawyers, youth groups, college students, journalists, and community leaderson how to use constitutional arguments effectivelyin their work.
