The CHS Alliance: Making Aid Work Better for People
The CHS Alliance is a global alliance of humanitarian and development organizations that are dedicated to making aid work better for people. The organization believes that aid organizations can deliver higher quality, more effective aid when they are accountable to the people they serve.
The CHS Alliance was established in 2015 as a result of the merger between two leading humanitarian networks, HAP International and People In Aid. The organization has since grown into a global network of over 200 member organizations from around the world.
At its core, the CHS Alliance is committed to promoting accountability and good practice within the humanitarian sector. The organization works with its members to develop and implement standards for quality and accountability in their work, including through its flagship initiative, the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS).
The CHS sets out nine commitments that all humanitarian actors should strive to meet in their work. These include commitments to promote participation and inclusion; provide appropriate assistance; prevent harm; ensure staff competence; manage resources effectively; communicate transparently; learn from experience; coordinate with other actors; and continuously improve.
By adhering to these commitments, organizations can ensure that their work is effective, efficient, ethical, transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of affected populations.
In addition to promoting good practice through standards-setting initiatives like the CHS, the CHS Alliance also provides training and capacity-building support for its members. This includes workshops on topics such as safeguarding against sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), gender equality mainstreaming (GEM), organizational development (OD), monitoring evaluation accountability learning (MEAL), among others.
Through these initiatives, the CHS Alliance aims not only to improve individual organizations' practices but also contribute towards broader systemic change within the sector. By working together towards common goals of accountability and effectiveness in aid delivery across different contexts worldwide - whether it be responding quickly during emergencies or supporting long-term development projects - we can make a real difference in people's lives.
One key area where this approach has been particularly successful is in addressing SEA within our sector. Through our Safeguarding Resource Hub initiative launched last year - which provides practical guidance on how organizations can prevent SEA from occurring within their operations - we have seen significant progress made by many members who have implemented new policies or strengthened existing ones around safeguarding measures such as reporting mechanisms or training programs for staff at all levels.
Another area where we have seen positive results is through our partnership with local NGOs who are often best placed to respond quickly during emergencies due their proximity communities affected by crises. By working closely with them on joint projects aimed at improving coordination between different actors involved response efforts – including government agencies international donors – we have been able achieve greater impact than would otherwise be possible if each actor worked independently without any collaboration whatsoever!
Overall then it's clear that there are many reasons why joining forces under banner like ours makes sense when trying tackle complex challenges facing today’s world – whether it be climate change conflict displacement poverty inequality disease outbreaks natural disasters etcetera! So if you're looking an opportunity get involved shaping future direction this vital field then look no further than joining us here at Chs alliance today!
