About Children's oncology group

Children's Oncology Group: The World's Childhood Cancer Experts

Cancer is a devastating disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It is especially heartbreaking when it strikes children, who are just beginning their lives. Fortunately, there are organizations like the Children's Oncology Group (COG) that are dedicated to fighting childhood cancer and improving the lives of young patients and their families.

COG is the world's largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. Founded in 1955, COG has been at the forefront of pediatric oncology for over six decades. Its mission is to cure all children with cancer, reduce the long-term effects of treatment, and improve the quality of life for survivors.

COG brings together more than 10,000 experts in childhood cancer from around the world. These include doctors, nurses, researchers, and other healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to advance our understanding of pediatric cancers and develop new treatments.

One of COG's most significant achievements has been its success in increasing survival rates for children with cancer. In 1970, only about 20% of children diagnosed with cancer survived five years or more after diagnosis. Today that number has increased to nearly 80%, thanks in large part to COG's efforts.

COG conducts clinical trials on a scale unmatched by any other organization in pediatric oncology research. These trials involve thousands of patients at hundreds of institutions across North America and beyond. By pooling resources and expertise from many different institutions, COG can conduct studies that no single institution could undertake alone.

The results have been impressive: since its inception over six decades ago; COG has conducted more than 100 clinical trials involving tens-of-thousands-of-patients worldwide resulting in significant improvements in survival rates for many types of childhood cancers such as leukemia (the most common type), brain tumors (the deadliest type), lymphoma (affecting lymph nodes), neuroblastoma (affecting nerve cells), Wilms tumor (affecting kidneys) among others.

In addition to conducting clinical trials on new treatments for childhood cancers; COGs also focuses on improving survivorship care - helping those who have survived their initial diagnosis live healthy lives after treatment ends - through research into late effects such as heart disease or infertility caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy used during treatment.

Another critical aspect where COGs plays an essential role is advocacy - advocating for policies that support funding for pediatric oncology research while also raising awareness about issues affecting families affected by childhood cancers such as access-to-care challenges faced by low-income families or lack-of-insurance coverage issues faced by some patients' families which can be financially devastating during an already difficult time.

In conclusion; The Children’s Oncology Group remains committed to finding better ways to treat these diseases while minimizing side effects so kids can grow up healthy without being held back by past medical problems related directly or indirectly due-to-cancer-treatment-related complications.

If you're looking for a way to support this vital work; consider donating your time or money towards this noble cause because every little bit helps!
