About Central pollution control board (cpcb)
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is a statutory organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in India. It was established in 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. CPCB is responsible for monitoring and controlling pollution levels across the country.
The primary objective of CPCB is to promote cleanliness and maintain a healthy environment for all living beings. The board works towards preventing, controlling, and abating environmental pollution by enforcing various laws related to water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, waste management, hazardous waste management, etc.
CPCB has been instrumental in creating awareness about environmental issues among people through various campaigns and programs. The board also conducts research on different aspects of environmental pollution to come up with effective solutions.
Water Pollution
CPCB has been working towards preventing water pollution by monitoring the quality of water bodies across the country. The board regularly collects samples from rivers, lakes, ponds, etc., to check their quality. If any pollutant exceeds the permissible limit set by CPCB or other regulatory bodies like State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs), then necessary action is taken against polluters.
Air Pollution
Air pollution has become a major concern in recent years due to industrialization and urbanization. CPCB monitors air quality across different cities in India using Air Quality Index (AQI). AQI measures pollutants like PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns), PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 microns), NOx (nitrogen oxides), SOx (sulfur oxides), CO (carbon monoxide), O3(ozone) etc., which are harmful to human health when present above permissible limits.
Noise Pollution
Noise pollution can cause hearing impairment or other health problems if it exceeds permissible limits set by regulatory bodies like CPCB or SPCBs. CPCB has set noise standards for different areas like residential, commercial, industrial, etc. The board also monitors noise levels during festivals and other events to ensure that they do not cause any disturbance to the public.
Waste Management
CPCB has been working towards proper waste management by enforcing various laws related to hazardous waste management, biomedical waste management, e-waste management, plastic waste management etc. The board also promotes the concept of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) among people through various campaigns.
CPCB has been successful in reducing pollution levels across the country through its efforts. However, there is still a long way to go before we can achieve a pollution-free environment. It is our responsibility as citizens of this country to cooperate with CPCB and other regulatory bodies in maintaining a healthy environment for ourselves and future generations.
