A beautiful and peaceful haven in the middle of the city
Magnificent piece of architecture. A must see while in NYC
I've visited 3 times...Sting Winter album concert, touristy visit with out of town guests, and 2017 Christmas Eve service. Concert was fantastic with acoustics. Tourist visit was ok. Christmas Eve was not great (service included). Architecture is not much, interior in particular, and is making no progress over the years; there's a cinder block wall front left! Makes the existing old cathedrals even more impressive, to realize how challenging it is to design, build, fund and complete them - with beauty and inspiration.
This place is beautiful. It's quiet, and serene, and you can walk around slowly admiring all of the architecture, and ornate details. There are porticos which are each different. The scale of the main space is massive! This is a must see in NYC!
Keith Haring chapel is closed and used as storage room. This was not made clear at the entrance which required 10$ ticket. Hence disappointing visit.
Paul Winter brings the Cathedral's weary set of bones and soul to life with each year's celebration of our northern hemisphere's winter solstice. It's akin to being emotionally reborn.
Great Anglican church. Great monuments in its interior and some referring to 9/11. Its gardens are also a great place. Whether you are a Christian or not, it is a place full of history that is worth knowing in the heart of Manhattan.
They charge you to enter. I went for a craft show, not a service.
Just like the rest of them, Amaizing edification of ideas and culture hiddin within who knows the real meanning and what is left for us to combine between our ideas and the way our parents rised us.
Nice church, but I find it impossible to charge $ 10 for a place to pray. Such a church must be accessible to everyone. You can ask for a donation.
I was here for a wedding. The church is gorgeous! The stained glass windows, sky high ceilings, carved details on the pulpit and around the church make this place a sight to behold! It really is extraordinary.
A very quiet place to refine many people visit. This place
Beautiful and massive gothic architecture. Always interesting art and sculpture to see. Tours available.
A wonderful place of silence in the heart of New York.
Will be rebuilt with great attention to detail after the major fire. In order to cover the costs for this, entrance fees are apparently now required.
Tip: Be sure to take a look at the Keith Haring altar!
Beautiful gothic design church that isn't even completed.
The Cathedral of Saint John in Harlem has to be One of the Best all Round Services for the community and visitors all over who come to this place. I came looking to pick up some interview clothing to go on some job seach.
The staff is very helpful and kind. This past Christmas Holiday they given me 2 stuff Animals for my Granddaughters. The have lots of Service to assist those who have needs
Just look up to the sky and a depth of expanse will point out what grandeur is to you
Stunning architecture, interesting park. I did not like that they charge $ 10 to enter the church.
Take the tour. You will learn so much about this incredible cathedral.
My wife and I come here two to three times a year for the blessing of the animals on Saint Francis Day, and the winter and summer Solstice Concerts
Largest church in new york! A must see for everyone.
They charge and do not warn that it is in arrangement you can not see anything other than scaffolding and walls; very nice vitraux
Many years of praying and meditating in this holy place. Among other occasions, stopped in to pray and meditate before my shift started at a nearby health care facility. The faith and prayers of generations of worshippers permeate the ambiance of the space. A wonderful place to visit and pray.
Didn't realize it cost $10 to go into it. Hop on, hop off bus should tell people this before they get off. Had to wait for 2 buses before there was room to get on again.
A beautiful cathedral, a very active work in progress ... it hosts artists, from poets to modern installations, for us Europeans it is unusual but well represents the city clinas
Stunning architecture and welcoming staff. Peaceful respite from the buzz of New York.
Americans & Serbians the connections !

A great visit always. We usually go to the noon Eucharist services at 12:15pm Monday-Saturday, which last for about half an hour, with readings of the Old Testament and the New Testament followed by a short sermon. People greet each other followed by the Lord s Supper. We love the noon services. Sunday services are usually more elaborated. Early morning Eucharist services are shorter while the evening services are music-based without a Eucharist. After services, kids can play in the playground and family can tour the garden with three peacocks roaming around freely on the ground. :) The current Dean of the Cathedral Dean Daniel is exceptional and a man of God. He is bringing the Cathedral to love the Lord Jesus. May God bless St John! Please also visit my church at ichurch.nyc
Impressive from the outside, would like to see the inside
Don't like to pay for visiting the house of our Father. Religion is not about money, it's about belief. Look nice from the outside then.
If you are travelling from Times Square to Harlem, you must take a stop at this cathedral. Just enjotmy the view, take a picture. It's the biggest church in the world.
Beautiful With luck you can attend an office Attention paid entrance Do not miss Columbia University next door Beautiful park also at the foot of the church where are exhibited works created by New York children
My Aunt worked her at one point, many of my cousins , siblings as well as myself were christened here when we were babies, so The Devine has a special impact on my life
Simply, a great place to get away from the City while never leaving the City; you can feel God's presence.
Magnificient architectural design for a very big cathedral. Glassy material inside is incredable.
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine (in English Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, by extension Cathedral Church of Saint John: The Great Divine in the City and Diocese of New York, i.e. Cathedral of St. John: the great divine in the city and diocese of New York) is the episcopal cathedral of New York. It is located on Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th street), in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. It is one of the most famous cathedrals on the American continent. Despite the fact that it is still unfinished, 180 m long and 70 m high, according to various sources it is the largest Protestant church in the world. Despite being an Anglican temple, it caters to faithful from all over the world. (from wikipedia)
This cathedral is one of the most beautiful places in NYC and one of the least promoted. It is located on the upper west side a few blocks from Central Park. Its Gothic style is captivating as well as imposing, the architectural details highlight the cultural and aesthetic value of the cathedral. Inside there is a shop and the entrance costs ten dollars per person. If you go for the first time it is a worthwhile experience. The cathedral also has a cultural agenda and if you are lucky, during your visit, you can find classical music concerts and if you are lucky you can listen to the organ. On the outskirts you can find gardens with beautiful and peculiar sculptures. I recommend this place because it gives you another side of the city beyond the most media and tourist places. NYC is more than times square.
beautiful, spiritual, contemporary, and traditional. Worth the trip.
Beautiful, holy...
We visited with a small group of about 20 and had a tour guide. The cathedral is magnificent. We have visited many of the old, famous, European cathedrals and St. John's can hold its own with most. Our tour guide was informative, pleasant and knowledgeable. If you have limited time I would certainly recommend taking one of the tours. They do a good job of allowing visitors while preserving the sacred feel and nature of the church. I would consider this a don't miss in NYC and only wish we could have attended a service. We are unlikely to build any more of these incredible structures and should appreciate the ones we have.
It looks absolutely stunning from the outside as well as the inside, but you have to pay $10 to visit it - and by that I mean enter it further than a few feet beyond the entrance and walk through pews and the sept. As a European (although not religious), I was absolutely stupefied, I had never seen anything like it before, and I've been in a LOT of cathedrals and churches... that's just wrong.
Who's ever seen a church charging you to pray?? These catholic's are a bunch of nut jobs. Church's should be free entry. And if you feel like making a donation then you can do that. Otherwise its crazy for them to charge.
I love the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine it is the largest Episcopal Church in New York I have been going there for over 10 years I enjoy the service the pageantry of this church and most important open to all people all of God's people and they are open minded to the LGBT community check us out the largest stained glass rose window to a magnificent organ you will love the sound check it out
A wonderful place to visit while in New York City. Take the guided tour it is really very interesting. They also have Mass on a Saturday and during the week too.
Nothing to highlight for Europeans who can enjoy infinitely better works. Of course, being a work still unfinished, it has been used as a gigantic exhibition hall by countless artists.
A beautiful cathedral that is still under construction.
It's freaking huge, and the stained glass windows are beautiful. Tour guide Talya was friendly and knowledgeable.
Beautiful cathedral! Everything so nice except for the receptionist
I confess to not having read or heard anything about the place. The surprise was total, one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have ever known. Worth the visit. Commit a small sin, to pray the entrance is free, a visit is charged a small price. So ... pray at will!
One of the jewels of the American Gothic Revival, designed by the great Ralph Adams Cram. Sublime evensong.
It is a still unfinished church that grows year after year with private funding and with the visitors offered. It is spectacular to see this site evolving to a cathedral in neo-Gothic style that is a unique case in the world. Once you completed it will become the largest church in the Americas and one of the largest in the world.
I did not know of its existence but I was amazed when I saw it. Upper west side has a very special climate, culture and art are breathed through its streets, from its most bohemian to the most conservative aspect, and this cathedral does not escape that climate. It looks like an abandoned church in the middle of a city full of life with a clock running fast. It is worth visiting and getting to know its surroundings. Entering the area implies an approach to the upper west side lifestyle that is undoubtedly a before and after knowing this place.
A definite stop while visiting NYC. Somewhat disappointed that so many years have passed and building is still not completed.
Beautiful place, worthy of a visit if only to appreciate its design and architecture.
I also found the neighborhood that was charming
This space is amazing! Went for a choir concert and the acoustics are phenomenal!
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is a magnificent architectural masterpiece located in New York City. It is the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership. The cathedral has been an integral part of New York's history since its inception, serving as a beacon for spiritual seekers, scholars, artists, and tourists alike.
The cathedral's construction began in 1892 under the guidance of architects Heins & LaFarge. However, due to financial constraints and other issues, it took over 120 years to complete this grand structure. The cathedral boasts an impressive Gothic Revival style architecture with intricate details that are sure to leave visitors awestruck.
One unique feature that sets this cathedral apart from others is its size - it is one of the largest cathedrals in the world! With over 600 feet in length and 124 feet in height at its highest point, it can accommodate up to 5,000 people at once. The interior design features stunning stained glass windows that depict various biblical scenes along with beautiful sculptures adorning every corner.
Apart from being a place for worship services on Sundays and other holy days throughout the year, St. John's also hosts numerous cultural events such as concerts by world-renowned musicians like Yo-Yo Ma or performances by dance troupes like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
The Cathedral also houses several institutions within its premises such as The Cathedral School (a K-8 school), The Choir School (a residential music program), The Textile Conservation Laboratory (which conserves historic textiles), and more recently added - "Cathedral Community Cares" which provides social services to those who need them most.
St. John's has always been committed to promoting interfaith dialogue among different religious communities through various programs such as "Sacred Sounds at St. John’s," which brings together musicians from different faiths for collaborative performances; "Peace Walks," where participants walk through different neighborhoods praying for peace; or hosting interfaith conferences on topics ranging from climate change to social justice issues.
In conclusion, if you're looking for an awe-inspiring experience that combines spirituality with artistry then look no further than St.John's Cathedral! Its grandeur will leave you spellbound while its commitment towards promoting peace & harmony among all religions will inspire you beyond words!
